    Le soutien des parents dans les Early childhood dual focused groups anglais et australiens : quelle approche ?

    Early childhood, dual-focused groups in which parents and young children participate together are increasingly available around the world. This article stems from two qualitative, doctoral research studies in Australian and English groups, exploring the concepts of nurture and support in shared parent and child activity. Eight key benefits of dual-focused support identified what parents experienced as supportive parenting provision: friendship and social network support; relational support; peer support; emotional support; parenting role support; information and resource support; ‘circle of care’ support; and multidisciplinary support. Through an analysis of current international discourses related to parent support across the early childhood landscape, the article discusses the importance of developing wider understandings about the value of dual-focused settings, amongst politicians, parents and practitioners

    Nurturing sense and sensibilities, engaging with parents locally and globally

    This research compares and contrasts international policies on early childhood, dual-focused service models in which parents and young children participate together. Drawing on current international discourses related to parent engagement in learning in the early years (OECD, 2012). This paper builds on earlier qualitative, doctoral research studies (Jackson and Needham, 2014). An Ecological perspective and Cultural-Historical Activity Theory are used to shed light on what parents experience as supportive in these dual-focused contexts and eight categories of support are used to frame a comparative discussion of policy directions. Qualitative critical discourse analysis of policy documents and related reports are used to consider how parental engagement strategies respond to the needs of parents. The foundation studies for the research were closely monitored as part of doctoral studies. The documentary analysis emphasises the ethical framing of support for parents. Limited take up of the Can-parent programme in England is contrasted with Australian supported play groups where the benefits of friendship and social network support, relational support, peer support, emotional support are emphasised. The article discusses the importance of developing shared understandings about nurture, support and engagement amongst parents and practitioners in dual-focused settings as a way of making hard to reach provision more accessible

    Walking Activity Recognition with sEMG Sensor Array on Thigh Circumference using Convolutional Neural Network

    In recognition of walking gait modes using surface electromyography (sEMG), the use of sEMG sensor array can provide sensor redundancy and less rigorous identification of sEMG electrode placements as compared to the conventional sEMG electrode placements right in the middle of muscle bellies. However, the potentially lesser discriminative and noisier sEMG signals from the sEMG sensor array pose the challenge in developing accurate and robust machine learning classifier for walking activity recognition. In this paper, we explore the use of convolution neural network (CNN) classifier with frequency gradient feature derived from EMG signal spectrogram for detecting different walking activities using an sEMG sensor array on thigh circumference. EMG dataset from five healthy subjects and an amputee for five walking activities namely walking at slow, normal and fast speed, ramp ascending and ramp descending are used to train and test the CNN-based classifier. Our preliminary findings suggest that frequency gradient feature can improve the CNN-based classifier performance for walking activity recognition using EMG sensor array on thigh circumference

    Degradation dynamics and dissipation kinetics of an imidazole fungicide (Prochloraz) in aqueous medium of varying pH

    Laboratory degradation studies were performed in water at pH 4.0, 7.0 and 9.2 using Prochloraz (450 EC) formulation at the concentration of 1.0 (T1) and 2.0 (T2) µg/mL. Water samples collected on 0 (2 h), 3, 7, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 days after treatments were processed for residue analysis of Prochloraz by HPLC-UV detector. In 60 days, dissipation was 89.1–90.5% at pH 4.0, 84.1–88.2% at pH 7.0, and 92.4–93.8% at pH 9.2 in both treatments. The results indicate that at pH 7.0 the degradation of Prochloraz was much slower as compared to other two. Between pH 4.0 and 9.2 the degradation of compound is little faster at pH 9.2. The half-life periods observed were 18.35 and 19.17 days at pH 4.0, 22.6 and 25.1 days at pH 7.0 and 15.8 and 16.6 days at pH 9.2 at T1 and T2 doses respectively

    Adaptation and validation of the Charlson Index for Read/OXMIS coded databases

    BACKGROUND: The Charlson comorbidity index is widely used in ICD-9 administrative data, however, there is no translation for Read/OXMIS coded data despite increasing use of the General Practice Research Database (GPRD). Our main objective was to translate the Charlson index for use with Read/OXMIS coded data such as the GPRD and test its association with mortality. We also aimed to provide a version of the comorbidity index for other researchers using similar datasets. METHODS: Two clinicians translated the Charlson index into Read/OXMIS codes. We tested the association between comorbidity score and increased mortality in 146 441 patients from the GPRD using proportional hazards models. RESULTS: This Read/OXMIS translation of the Charlson index contains 3156 codes. Our validation showed a strong positive association between Charlson score and age. Cox proportional models show a positive increasing association with mortality and Charlson score. The discrimination of the logistic regression model for mortality was good (AUC = 0.853). CONCLUSION: We have translated a commonly used comorbidity index into Read/OXMIS for use in UK primary care databases. The translated index showed a good discrimination in our study population. This is the first study to develop a co-morbidity index for use with the Read/OXMIS coding system and the GPRD. A copy of the co-morbidity index is provided for other researchers using similar database

    Origin of Capacity Fading in Nano-Sized Co3O4Electrodes: Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Study

    Transition metal oxides have been suggested as innovative, high-energy electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries because their electrochemical conversion reactions can transfer two to six electrons. However, nano-sized transition metal oxides, especially Co3O4, exhibit drastic capacity decay during discharge/charge cycling, which hinders their practical use in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we prepared nano-sized Co3O4with high crystallinity using a simple citrate-gel method and used electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method to examine the origin for the drastic capacity fading observed in the nano-sized Co3O4anode system. During cycling, AC impedance responses were collected at the first discharged state and at every subsequent tenth discharged state until the 100th cycle. By examining the separable relaxation time of each electrochemical reaction and the goodness-of-fit results, a direct relation between the charge transfer process and cycling performance was clearly observed

    This handbook aims to provide a comprehensive (though obviously not exhaustive) picture of state-of-the-art international scholarship on the history of money and currency. The chapters of this handbook cover a wide selection of research topics. They span chronologically from antiquity to nowadays and are geographically stretched from Latin America to Asia, although most of them focus on Western Europe and the USA, as a large part of the existing research does. The authors of these chapters constitute, we hope, a balanced sample of various generations of scholars who contributed to what Barry Eichengreen defined as "the new monetary and financial history" &#8211; an approach that combines the analysis of monetary aggregates and policies with the structure and dynamics of the banking sector and financial markets. We have structured this handbook in ten broad thematic parts: the historical origins of money; money, coinage, and the state; trade, money markets, and international currencies; money and metals; monetary experiments; Asian monetary systems; exchange rate regimes; monetary integration; central banking and monetary policy; and aggregate price shocks. In this introduction, we offer for each part some historical context, a few key insights from the literature, and a brief analytical summary of each chapter. Our aim is to draw a map that hopefully will help readers to organize their journey through this very wide and diverse research area
