Biodegradation of Petroleum-Polluted Soils Using CNB-Tech – The Nigerian Experience

Remediation of petroleum-hydrocarbon-polluted soil via biodegradation process is viewed globally as an environmentally friendly process. In this study, an overview of past and present field-scale petroleum hydrocarbon biodegradation techniques utilized in Nigeria was conducted using the tools of literature review and field survey. Pilot-scale biodegradation of hydrocarbons in petroleum-impacted clay soil of up to 42-year-long contamination using novel and eco-safe CNB-Tech was carried out. This was followed by a comparative evaluation of crop growth performance on crude-oil-polluted soil remediated using a biodegradation technique adopted by a reputable oil company in Nigeria and the innovative CNB-Tech. The study revealed that CNB-Tech is an innovative, time-effective, cost-effective and eco-friendly bioremediation technique and has the potential to excel over some existing biodegradation procedures employed by many oil industries especially in the developing countries

An evaluation of clients' needs and responsibilities in the construction process

The importance of clients' responsibilities in the construction process, as perceived by both clients and consultants, was assessed through a structured questionnaire survey. Using the relative index ranking technique, clients' fundamental needs and responsibilities in the construction process were analysed and ranked. Results indicate that the four most important needs are: functionality of the building, safety of the building, quality of the building, and completion time. The four most important clients' responsibilities identified by clients themselves are: planning/design, project finance, project implementation/management, and project definition/formulation. The four most important clients' responsibilities to project consultants are: project finance, project definition/formulation, planning/design, and project implementation/management. If both consultants and clients understand the fundamental needs of construction clients and if clients themselves are prepared to take an active role in the construction process, the chances of producing more successful projects will improve. © 1995 ©, MCB UP Limited. Editorial Approaches to Wittgenstein’s Nachlass: Towards a Historical Appreciation

Building on the unpublished correspondence between Ludwig Wittgenstein's literary executors Rush Rhees, Elizabeth Anscombe and Georg Henrik von Wright, this paper sketches the historical development of different editorial approaches to Wittgenstein's Nachlass. Using the metaphor of a ladder, it is possible to distinguish seven significant “rungs” or “steps” in the history of editing Wittgenstein's writings. The paper focuses particularly on the first four rungs, elucidating how Rhees, Anscombe and von Wright developed different editorial approaches that resulted in significant differences in their editions. The paper sheds light on how these editorial differences are grounded in the editors' divergent understandings of their task. It is suggested that future research may investigate the development of editorial approaches to Wittgenstein's Nachlass as a human story of philosophical inheritance
