Diamond electro-optomechanical resonators integrated in nanophotonic circuits
Diamond integrated photonic devices are promising candidates for emerging
applications in nanophotonics and quantum optics. Here we demonstrate active
modulation of diamond nanophotonic circuits by exploiting mechanical degrees of
freedom in free-standing diamond electro-optomechanical resonators. We obtain
high quality factors up to 9600, allowing us to read out the driven
nanomechanical response with integrated optical interferometers with high
sensitivity. We are able to excite higher order mechanical modes up to 115 MHz
and observe the nanomechanical response also under ambient conditions.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Serodiagnosis of infectious mononucleosis by using recombinant Epstein-Barr virus antigens and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technology
Four recombinant, diagnostically useful Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) proteins representative of the viral capsid antigen (p150), diffuse early antigen (p54), the major DNA-binding protein (p138), and the EBV nuclear antigen (p72) (W. Hinderer, H. Nebel-Schickel, H.H. Sonneborn, M. Motz, R. KĂĽhbeck, and H. Wolf, J. Exp. Clin. Cancer Res. 7[Suppl.]:132, 1988) were used to set up individual enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for the qualitative and quantitative detection of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG antibodies. In direct comparison with results obtained by standard immunofluorescence or immunoperoxidase assays, it was then shown that the recombinant EBV ELISAs provide the means for specific and sensitive serodiagnosis of infectious mononucleosis (IM) caused by EBV. The most useful markers in sera from such patients proved to be IgM antibodies against p54, p138, and p150. Additional positive markers for recent or ongoing IM apparently were IgG antibodies against p54 and p138. In contrast, anti-p72 IgG had a high preference for sera from healthy blood donors and, therefore, can be considered indicative of past exposure to the virus. Altogether, the individual ELISAs proved to be as specific and at least as sensitive for the diagnosis of IM as the currently available standard techniques are. Moreover, our findings suggest that, by combining individual test antigens, a workable ELISA system consisting of three assays (IgM against p54, p138, and p150; IgG against p54 and p138; and IgG against p72) can be established for the standardized rapid diagnosis of acute EBV infections
EFFICIENCY INDEX USED TO ASSESS SHOULDER STRESS IN COLLEGE SOFTBALL PITCHERS THROUGHOUT A SIMULATED GAME
Shoulder distraction forces in softball pitching are known to have a positive impact on performance yet a negative impact on musculoskeletal health. The purpose of this study was to assess changes in shoulder stress across innings pitched using Efficiency Arm-Stress Index (EASI) scores. Motion capture was used on collegiate softball pitchers pitching a simulated game. Peak shoulder distraction force was obtained using inverse dynamics procedures and used to calculate an EASI score (fastball velocity divided by peak shoulder distraction force in percent body weight). A RM·ANOVA revealed inning had no effect on EASI score (F[6,7]=1.28, p=0.286). Understanding a pitcher’s efficiency score may help shape individual pitching loads. Future work should investigate clinically meaningful changes in efficiency scores and mechanisms behind low efficiencies
Space Charge Limited 2-d Electron Flow between Two Flat Electrodes in a Strong Magnetic Field
An approximate analytic solution is constructed for the 2-d space charge
limited emission by a cathode surrounded by non emitting conducting ledges of
width Lambda. An essentially exact solution (via conformal mapping) of the
electrostatic problem in vacuum is matched to the solution of a linearized
problem in the space charge region whose boundaries are sharp due to the
presence of a strong magnetic field. The current density growth in a narrow
interval near the edges of the cathode depends strongly on Lambda. We obtain an
empirical formula for the total current as a function of Lambda which extends

Novel Layers for Dies Used in Electromagnetic Sheet Metal Forming Processes
Due to the high forming velocities during electromagnetic sheet metal forming processes, a high impact force acts between workpiece and die. Here, the die surface sustains high damages shown by high wear and galling of the workpiece on the die surface. To enhance the die lifetime, a novel coating concept based on the PVD (physical vapour deposition) process was developed. In doing so, the hardness and the toughness of the designed layers were varied and adjusted to the demands of AlMg-sheet forming process
High-Q optomechanical circuits made from polished nanocrystalline diamond thin films
We demonstrate integrated optomechanical circuits with high mechanical
quality factors prepared from nanocrystalline diamond thin films. Using
chemomechanical polishing, the RMS surface roughness of as grown
polycrystalline diamond films is reduced below 3nm to allow for the fabrication
of high-quality nanophotonic circuits. By integrating free-standing
nanomechanical resonators into integrated optical devices, efficient read-out
of the thermomechanical motion of diamond resonators is achieved with on-chip
Mach-Zehnder interferometers. Mechanical quality factors up to 28,800 are
measured for four-fold clamped optomechanical resonators coupled to the
evanescent near-field of nanophotonic waveguides. Our platform holds promise
for large-scale integration of optomechanical circuits for on-chip metrology
and sensing applications
The rural almshouse population in Missouri
Cooperative rural research."June, 1938."This is a study of the rural almshouse in Missouri. The various types of almshouse administration and methods of inmate care are defined and described, together with the social characteristics of the inmate population. As a matter of considerable contemporary interest an analysis was made of the eligibility of inmates for old age assistance in order to determine the extent to which counties might be relieved of their inmate population through this type of public assistance. Examination of data on nearly 3,000 inmates indicated that more than one-half (52.4 per cent) were under 70 years of age which is the present minimum age limit for old age assistance. It was further determined that at least one-half of the ones eligible due to age were not likely to be approved for old age assistance since they were either physically or mentally disabled. It was concluded that less than one-fourth of the total inmate population might qualify for old age assistance and that additional provisions would be necessary if the rural counties are to be relieved of the care of their almshouse population.By C.T. A fixed-point property of logic-based bargaining solution
Abstract. This paper presents a logic-based bargaining solution based on Zhang and Zhang’s framework. It is shown that if the demand sets of players are logically closed, the solution satisfies a fixed-point property, which says that the outcome of bargaining is the result of mutual belief revision. The result is interesting not only because it presents a desirable logical property of bargaining solution but also establishes a link between bargaining theory and multi-agent belief revision.
