Discrete Model of Ideological Struggle Accounting for Migration
A discrete in time model of ideological competition is formulated taking into
account population migration. The model is based on interactions between global
populations of non-believers and followers of different ideologies. The complex
dynamics of the attracting manifolds is investigated.
Conversion from one ideology to another by means of (i) mass media influence
and (ii) interpersonal relations is considered. Moreover a different birth rate
is assumed for different ideologies, the rate being assumed to be positive for
the reference population, made of initially non-believers. Ideological
competition can happen in one or several regions in space. In the latter case,
migration of non-believers and adepts is allowed; this leads to an enrichment
of the ideological dynamics. Finally, the current ideological situation in the
Arab countries and China is commented upon from the point of view of the
presently developed mathematical model. The massive forced conversion by

Efficiency of osseodensification versus screw expansion technique for augmentation of narrow alveolar ridges: A comparative clinical study
Background: Alveolar ridge expansion is proposed when the alveolar crest thickness is ≤5 mm. The screw expansion technique has been utilized for many years to expand narrow alveolar ridges. Recently, the osseodensification technique has been suggested as a reliable technique to expand narrow alveolar ridges with effective width gain and as little surgical operating time as possible. The current study aimed to compare osseodensification and screw expansion in terms of clinical width gain and operating time. Materials and methods: Forty implant osteotomies were performed in deficient horizontal alveolar ridges (3–5 mm). A total of 19 patients aged 21–59 years were randomized into two groups: the screw expansion group, which involved 20 osteotomies performed by screw expander drills, and osseodensification group, which comprised 20 osteotomies achieved by osseodensification drilling technique. One millimetre below the alveolar bone crest was measured with a bone caliper at two intervals (before implant osteotomy and after implant osteotomy), and operating time was assessed. Results: Before expansion, the mean alveolar ridge width was 4.20 ± 0.71 mm in the osseodensification group and 4.52 ± 0.53 mm in the screw-expansion group. No statistically significant difference in alveolar bone width before expansion was found between the groups (P > 0.05). After the expansion of the alveolar ridge with osseodensification or screw expansion techniques, the average ridge width was 5.48 ± 0.57 mm in the osseodensification group and 5.71 ± 0.53 mm in the screw-expansion group. Difference in width gain postoperatively between the groups was 0.09 mm, which was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). According to operating time, osseodensification consumed 6.21 ± 0.55 minutes, and screw expansion required 16.32 ± 0.60 minutes for a single implant with a significant difference between the groups (P < 0.0001). A new hybrid dual active bridge modular multilevel based DC-DC converter for HVDC networks
Multi-terminal high voltage DC transmission currently represents a leading technology in long-distance power transmission systems. Among the main technical challenges facing such technology, DC fault isolation, permitting different grounding schemes, providing interoperability, and high DC voltage stepping between different HVDC networks, and allowing high-speed power reversal without power interruption especially when connecting the pre-existing voltage source converters (VSC) and line commutated converters (LCC)-based HVDC networks. This paper introduces a new modular multilevel converter (MMC) based front-to-front DC-DC converter to interconnect two different types (LCC/VSC) of HVDC networks. The proposed topology comprises a voltage source MMC (VS-MMC) and a current source MMC (CS-MMC), while both are coupled via an AC link including the isolating transformer. The proposed topology can successfully provide an uninterruptible bi-directional power flow, high DC voltage stepping with a DC fault blocking capability, and low number of semiconductors due to the usage of only half-bridge SMs. The system design is provided with a detailed mathematical analysis. Furthermore, two active power control methodologies are proposed and compared. The first control technique is simpler and entails lower passive elements, while the second technique ensures a zero reactive power over the full range of active power flow. Furthermore, Losses analysis and comparison are provided between the two proposed control techniques. Finally, Control-Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHiL) test validation is employed to confirm the validity of the proposed system under healthy as well as different fault scenarios
Alcohol use among amateur sportsmen in Ireland
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective of this study was to establish baseline data on alcohol consumption patterns, behaviours and harms among amateur sportsmen in the Republic of Ireland.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>The study presents findings from the baseline survey for a cluster randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a community intervention programme to reduce problem alcohol use among a representative sample of Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) clubs in two counties in the Republic of Ireland. Self reported alcohol use, prevalence of binge drinking, AUDIT scores and alcohol-related harms were assessed in amateur GAA sportsmen aged 16 years and over.</p> <p>Nine hundred and sixty (960) players completed questionnaires (72% response rate). Mean age was 24.0 years (S.D. 5.2). Of those aged 18 years or over, 75% had post-primary education; most (864, 90%) were current drinkers and 8.2% were regular smokers. The self-reported average yearly alcohol consumption was 12.5 litres. Almost one third (31%) of current drinkers reported drinking over the recommended limit of 21 standard drinks per week and just over half (54.3%) reported drinking 6 or more standard drinks in a row at least once a week (regular binge drinking). Of those who (self) completed the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) questionnaire, three-quarters (74.7%) had a score of 8 or more; 11.5% had a score of 20 or above warranting referral for diagnostic evaluation and treatment. Almost all (87.6%) of the 864 drinkers reported experiencing at least one harm due to their drinking. These alcohol misuse outcomes were higher than those found in a nationally representative sample of males of a similar age. There were strong associations between regular binge drinking and reporting harms such as being in a fight (adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.02, p < 0.001), missing time from work or college (adjusted OR 1.39, p = 0.04) or being in an accident (adjusted OR 1.78, p = 0.04).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These male amateur sportsmen reported high rates of alcohol consumption and alcohol-related harm.</p
State-building, war and violence : evidence from Latin America
In European history, war has played a major role in state‐building and the state monopoly on violence. But war is a very specific form of organized political violence, and it is decreasing on a global scale. Other patterns of armed violence now dominate, ones that seem to undermine state‐building, thus preventing the replication of European experiences. As a consequence, the main focus of the current state‐building debate is on fragility and a lack of violence control inside these states. Evidence from Latin American history shows that the specific patterns of the termination of both war and violence are more important than the specific patterns of their organization. Hence these patterns can be conceptualized as a critical juncture for state‐building. While military victories in war, the subordination of competing armed actors and the prosecution of perpetrators are conducive for state‐building, negotiated settlements, coexistence, and impunity produce instability due to competing patterns of authority, legitimacy, and social cohesion
Effective Melanoma Immunotherapy in Mice by the Skin-Depigmenting Agent Monobenzone and the Adjuvants Imiquimod and CpG
Background: Presently melanoma still lacks adequate treatment options for metastatic disease. While melanoma is exceptionally challenging to standard regimens, it is suited for treatment with immunotherapy based on its immunogenicity. Since treatment-related skin depigmentation is considered a favourable prognostic sign during melanoma intervention, we here aimed at the reverse approach of directly inducing vitiligo as a shortcut to effective anti-melanoma immunity. Methodology and Principal Findings: We developed an effective and simple to use form of immunotherapy by combining the topical skin-bleaching agent monobenzone with immune-stimulatory imiquimod cream and cytosine-guanine oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG) injections (MIC therapy). This powerful new approach promptly induced a melanoma antigen-specific immune response, which abolished subcutaneous B16. F10 melanoma growth in up to 85% of C57BL/6 mice. Importantly, this regimen induced over 100 days of tumor-free survival in up to 60% of the mice, and forcefully suppressed tumor growth upon re-challenge either 65- or 165 days after MIC treatment cessation. Conclusions: MIC therapy is effective in eradicating melanoma, by vigilantly incorporating NK-, B-and T cells in its therapeutic effect.
