CdSe quantum dot (QD) and molecular dye hybrid sensitizers for TiO2 mesoporous solar cells: working together with a common hole carrier of cobalt complexes
Redox couples based on cobalt complexes were found to be effective in regenerating both inorganic CdSe quantum dot-and organic dye-sensitizers. The hybrid sensitizer composed of CdSe QD and ruthenium sensitizer (Z907Na) dye showed a maximum power conversion efficiency of 4.76% on using cobalt(o-phen)(3)(2+/3+) as a common redox mediator.close202
Instability in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cells due to elemental migration and chemical composition changes
Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have rapidly grown as favorable materials for photovoltaic applications, but accomplishing long-term stability is still a major research problem. This work demonstrates a new insight on instability and degradation factors in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cells aging with time in open air. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been used to investigate the compositional changes caused by device degradation over the period of 1000 hrs. XPS spectra confirm the migration of metallic ions from the bottom electrode (ITO) as a key factor causing the chemical composition change in the perovskite layer besides the diffusion of oxygen. XPS results are in good agreement with the crystallographic marks. Glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GD-OES) has also been performed on the samples to correlate the XPS results. Based on the experimental results, fundamental features that account for the instability in the perovskite solar cell is discussed. - 2017 The Author(s).The authors are thankful to the Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Qatar University for the laboratory support during the experimental work. Optimization of distyryl-Bodipy chromophores for efficient panchromatic sensitization in dye sensitized solar cells
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Versatility of Bodipy (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a, 4a-diaza-s-indacene) dyes was further expanded in recent dye-sensitized solar cell applications. Here we report a series of derivatives designed to address earlier problems in Bodipy sensitized solar cells. In the best case example, an overall efficiency of a modest 2.46% was achieved, but panchromatic nature of the dyes is quite impressive. This is the best reported efficiency in liquid electrolyte solar cells with Bodipy dyes as photosensitizers
Formation of artificial pores in nano-TiO2 photo-electrode films using acetylene-black for high-efficiency, dye-sensitized solar cells
Acetylene-black paste without a light scattering layer was applied to meso-porous TiO2 photo-electrode films with a crystalline framework, a low residual carbon, and a tunable morphological pore size. The thermal-treated TiO2 photo-electrode films had an increased acetylene-black concentration with an increase in artificial pores and a decrease in residual carbon. The performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was enhanced by the use of the TiO2 photo-anode pastes at various acetylene-black concentrations. The photo-conversion efficiency of the DSSCs using TiO2 photo-electrode films with 1.5 wt% acetylene-black was enhanced from 7.98 (no acetylene-black) to 9.75% without the integration of a light-scattering layer.open5
A perspective on using experiment and theory to identify design principles in dye-sensitized solar cells
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have been the subject of wide-ranging studies for many
years because of their potential for large-scale manufacturing using roll-to-roll processing
allied to their use of earth abundant raw materials. Two main challenges exist for DSC
devices to achieve this goal; uplifting device efficiency from the 12 to 14% currently
achieved for laboratory-scale âheroâ cells and replacement of the widely-used liquid
electrolytes which can limit device lifetimes. To increase device efficiency requires optimized
dye injection and regeneration, most likely from multiple dyes while replacement
of liquid electrolytes requires solid charge transporters (most likely hole transport materials
â HTMs). While theoretical and experimental work have both been widely applied to
different aspects of DSC research, these approaches are most effective when working in
tandem. In this context, this perspective paper considers the key parameters which
influence electron transfer processes in DSC devices using one or more dye molecules
and how modelling and experimental approaches can work together to optimize electron
injection and dye regeneration.
This paper provides a perspective that theory and experiment are best used in tandem to study
DSC device
Electron donor-acceptor distance dependence of the dynamics of light-induced interfacial charge transfer in the dye-sensitization of nanocrystalline oxide semiconductors
The effect of electronic and nuclear factors on the dynamics of dye-to-semiconductor electron transfer was studied employing RuII(terpy)(NCS)3 sensitizers grafted onto transparent films made of titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Various approaches were strived to understand the dependence of the kinetics of charge injection and recombination processes upon the distance separating the dye molecules and the redox active surface. A series of bridged sensitizers containing p- phenylene spacers of various lengths and phosphonic anchoring groups were adsorbed onto TiO2 films. The kinetics of interfacial charge transfer was recorded by use of time-resolved spectroscopy in the fs-ps domain. The electron injection process was found to be biphasic with a clear exponential distance dependence of the fast kinetic component. The slower part of the kinetics was essentially unaffected by the length of the spacer bridge and was attributed to sensitizer molecules that are weakly bound to the surface with no direct contact of the anchoring group with the semiconductor. In a second approach, the kinetics of both forward- and back-electron transfer across a layer of insulating Al2O3 deposited onto TiO2 nanocrystalline particles was investigated. Efficient charge injection was observed over distances up to 3 nm
Rose Bengal sensitized bilayered photoanode of nano-crystalline TiOâCeO for dye-sensitized solar cell application
There are two traditional ways to read Kantâs claim that every event necessarily has a cause: the weaker every-event some-cause (WCP) and the stronger same-cause same-effect (SCP) causal principles. The debate on whether and where he subscribes to the SCP has focused on the Analogies in the Critique of Pure Reason (Guyer, Allison, and Watkins) and on the Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science (Friedman). By analysing the arguments and conclusions of both the Analogies and the Postulates, as well as the two Latin principles non datur casus and non datur fatum that summarise their results, I will argue that the SCP is actually demonstrated in the Postulates section of the First Critique
