Why East Asian Economies Have Been Sucessful: Some Lessons For Other Developing Countries

    Get PDF
By almost any standard, the countries of East Asia have outperformed other developing countries over the past three decades. While there is no "Asian Model" of development, there are some common threads that run through the development experiences of East Asian countries. These include an outward-looking strategy, intrusive but market-oriented government policies, macroeconomic policies that encourage savings and investment, and a social consensus for economic growth. The positive experience of East Asian countries has begun to influence policymakers in other developing regions.

On Some Unifications Arising from the MIMO Rician Shadowed Model

This paper shows that the proposed Rician shadowed model for multi-antenna communications allows for the unification of a wide set of models, both for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and single- input single-output (SISO) communications. The MIMO Rayleigh and MIMO Rician can be deduced from the MIMO Rician shadowed, and so their SISO counterparts. Other more general SISO models, besides the Rician shadowed, are included in the model, such as the κ-μ, and its recent generalization, the κ-μ shadowed model. Moreover, the SISO η-μ and Nakagami-q models are also included in the MIMO Rician shadowed model. The literature already presents the probability density function (pdf) of the Rician shadowed Gram channel matrix in terms of the well-known gamma- Wishart distribution. We here derive its moment generating function in a tractable form. Closed- form expressions for the cumulative distribution function and the pdf of the maximum eigenvalue are also carried out.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

The vector BPS baby Skyrme model

We investigate the relation between the BPS baby Skyrme model and its vector meson formulation, where the baby Skyrme term is replaced by a coupling between the topological current BμB_\mu and the vector meson field ωμ\omega_\mu. The vector model still possesses infinitely many symmetries leading to infinitely many conserved currents which stand behind its solvability. It turns out that the similarities and differences of the two models depend strongly on the specific form of the potential. We find, for instance, that compactons (which exist in the BPS baby Skyrme model) disappear from the spectrum of solutions of the vector counterpart. Specifically, for the vector model with the old baby Skyrme potential we find that it has compacton solutions only provided that a delta function source term effectively screening the topological charge is inserted at the compacton boundary. For the old baby Skyrme potential squared we find that the vector model supports exponentially localized solitons, like the BPS baby Skyrme model. These solitons, however, saturate a BPS bound which is a nonlinear function of the topological charge and, as a consequence, higher solitons are unstable w.r.t. decay into smaller ones, which is at variance with the more conventional situation (a linear BPS bound and stable solitons) in the BPS baby Skyrme model.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure

    Mass Incarceration & HIV Infection

HIV is a critical problem among the incarcerated population. As of 2014, African Americans disproportionately made up 2.3 million of the 6.8 million correctional population. People of the correctional population are more susceptible to a decrease of CD4 cells (cells that kill the HIV virus). African Americans are at an elevated risk of HIV vs. everyone else in the correctional population

Dance/Movement Therapy for Reducing Restraints in Inpatient Psychiatry: A Critical Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Physical restraints have been used as a means to control behavior that is harmful to self or others, often times stemming from diagnoses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Restraints physically manipulate the body, but also have negative effects on thoughts and feelings. Verbal calming has been an option to aid in de-escalation, but there has been growing research on the benefits of using dance/movement therapy to process and resolve extreme emotions. The aim of this literature review is to explore the important work of therapeutic movement in acute inpatient settings, utilizing the power of the mind-body connection. Through a review of the literature, different dance/movement therapy techniques such as mirroring, breathwork, and tension flow rhythms have been shown to aid in calming for both patients and staff. Limitations are also addressed, specifically focused on power dynamics and gender roles within the inpatient psychiatry setting
