How Leader Role Identity Influences the Process of Leader Emergence: A Social Network Analysis

    Get PDF
Contemporary literature on leadership emphasizes the importance of having a leader identity in building leadership skills and functioning effectively as leaders. We build on this approach by examining and unpacking the role of leader identity in leadership emergence. Taking the perspective that leadership is a dynamic social process between group members, we propose a social network-based process model whereby leader role identity predicts network centrality, which leads to leader emergence. We test our model using a sample of 88 cadets participating in a training course on leadership development. In support of our model, cadets who possess a stronger leader identity were more likely to emerge as leaders, as rated by peers and course trainers, and these relationships were mediated by two indicators of network centrality reflecting one’s ability to broker information (i.e., betweenness centrality) and one’s popularity (i.e., indegree centrality) within one’s group. Implications for research and practice are discussed

Language As Key Factor Of Long-Term Value Creation In Mergers And Acquisitions In The Telecommunications Sector

This article analyzes long-term value creation or destruction in mergers and acquisitions in the telecommunications sector. After characterizing the market targeted by the analysis (telecommunications) and discussing and selecting the most suitable long-term methodology, we will make an econometric analysis of telecommunications M&A in the period from 1995 to 2010. The research will focus on telephone companies or operators as leading players in the sector. Based on this econometric analysis, we clearly found evidence of value destruction (2000-2010) using different methodologies, and value creation in the M&A using same language in the involved companies. According with the type of operations, some political recommendations can be established. This is the first econometric study devoted to long-term value creation in telecommunications after the liberalization of the telecom market

The paper presents the results of a research concerning the use / construction of eportfolios in the context of Adult Education and Training - Secondary Level (CEFA-NS). In order to design the syllabus to develop a continuous session training, we analyze the technological skills from a group of trainees (n=170) and trainers (n=12) of CEFA-NS that participated in the dissemination of an e-portfolios platform (Elgg) on the Secondary School Padre Benjamim Salgado (ESPBS). Data were collected by a questionnaire and analyzed using the PASW (Predictive Analytics Software). The results show that the high percentages using computers, Internet and email evidence that the participants when they keep contact with these technologies, they are getting essential skills concerning the Technologies of Information and Communication. However, their use depends on how old each one is

Study of the electronic structure of electron accepting cyano-films: TCNQ: Versus TCNE

In this article, we perform systematic research on the electronic structure of two closely related organic electron acceptor molecules (TCNQ and TCNE), which are of technological interest due to their outstanding electronic properties. These studies have been performed from the experimental point of view by the use electron spectroscopies (XPS and UPS) and supported theoretically by the use of ab-initio DFT calculations. The cross-check between both molecules allows us to identify the characteristic electronic features of each part of the molecules and their contribution to the final electronic structure. We can describe the nature of the band gap of these materials, and we relate this with the appearance of the shake-up features in the core level spectra. A band bending and energy gap reduction of the aforementioned electronic structure in contact with a metal surface are seen in the experimental results as well in the theoretical calculations. This behavior implies that the TCNQ thin film accepts electrons from the metal substrate becoming a Schottky n-junctionThis work was supported by the Spanish MICyT under grants No. FIS2016-74893-P and MAT2013-47869-C4-3-

Recognition, validation and certification of competences using ePortfolio: contributions to changing the evaluation paradigm and to the development of computer science literacy

The Padre Benjamim Salgado’s Secondary School has an open source learning platform - Elgg ePortfolio - available since November 2006. The usage of this platform, by both teachers and students, has been stimulated through several divulgation and training sessions, the latter in the context of a continuous training program for teachers In the scope of a Ph.D. degree in progress, we are using the platform in the Education and Training of Adults (ETA) initiative. We intend to analyze the extent to which the ePortfolio usage contributes to the construction of the learning reflexive portfolio in ETA courses.CIE

Reconhecimento, validação e certificação de competências (RVCC): experiências de construção de portefólios reflexivos

    Get PDF

Factors associated with hospitalization after suicide spectrum behaviors: results from a multicentre study in Spain

    Get PDF
Objectives: to identify factors associated with admission after suicide spectrum behaviors. Methods: Patient's characteristics, the nature of their suicidal behavior, admission rates between centres, and factors associated with admission have been examined in suicide spectrum presentations to emergency departments in three Spanish cities. Results: Intent of the suicidal behavior had the greatest impact on hospitalization. Older age, living alone, self-harm method not involving drug overdose, previous history of suicide spectrum behaviors and psychiatric diagnosis of schizophrenia, mood or personality disorder were independently associated with being admitted. There was a three-fold between-centre difference in the rate of hospitalization. Conclusions: widespread differences in the rate of hospitalization were primarily accounted for by characteristics of the individual patients and their suicidal behavior
