    Wood zone plate fishnet metalens

Unfortunately, they usually display higher reflection losses than conventional dielectric lenses. Here, we demonstrate a low-profile Wood zone plate metalens based on the fishnet metamaterial working in a near-zero regime with an equivalent refractive index less than unity (nf = 0.51). The metalens is made of alternating dielectric and fishnet metamaterial concentric rings. The use of fishnet metamaterial allows reducing the reflections from the lens, while maintaining low profile, low cost and ease of manufacturing. The lens is designed towork at theW-band of the millimeter-waves range with a focal length FL = 22.8 mm (7.5 λ0) aiming at antenna or radar system applications. The focusing per- formance of the lens along with its radiation characteristics in a lens antenna configuration have been studied numerically and confirmed experimentally, showing a gain improvement of ~2.5 dB with respect to a fishnet Soret metalens.This work was sponsored by Spanish Government under contract TEC2014-51902-C2-2-R.     Terahertz epsilon-near-zero graded-index lens

    An epsilon-near-zero graded-index converging lens with planar faces is proposed and analyzed. Each perfectly-electric conducting (PEC) waveguide comprising the lens operates slightly above its cut-off frequency and has the same length but different cross-sectional dimensions. This allows controlling individually the propagation constant and the normalized characteristic impedance of each waveguide for the desired phase front at the lens output while Fresnel reflection losses are minimized. A complete theoretical analysis based on the waveguide theory and Fermat’s principle is provided. This is complemented with numerical simulation results of two-dimensional and three-dimensional lenses, made of PEC and aluminum, respectively, and working in the terahertz regime, which show good agreement with the analytical work.Effort sponsored by Spanish Government under contracts Consolider “Engineering Metamaterials” CSD2008-00066 and TEC2011-28664-C02-01.     Terahertz wave transmission in flexible polystyrene-lined hollow metallic waveguides for the 2.5-5 THz band.

    A low-loss and low-dispersive optical-fiber-like hybrid HE11 mode is developed within a wide band in metallic hollow waveguides if their inner walls are coated with a thin dielectric layer. We investigate terahertz (THz) transmission losses from 0.5 to 5.5 THz and bending losses at 2.85 THz in a polystyrene-lined silver waveguides with core diameters small enough (1 mm) to minimize the number of undesired modes and to make the waveguide flexible, while keeping the transmission loss of the HE11 mode low. The experimentally measured loss is below 10 dB/m for 2 < ? < 2.85 THz (∌4-4.5 dB/m at 2.85 THz) and it is estimated to be below 3 dB/m for 3 < ? < 5 THz according to the numerical calculations. At ∌1.25 THz, the waveguide shows an absorption peak of ∌75 dB/m related to the transition between the TM11-like mode and the HE11 mode. Numerical modeling reproduces the measured absorption spectrum but underestimates the losses at the absorption peak, suggesting imperfections in the waveguide walls and that the losses can be reduced further. © 2013 Optical Society of America

    Los escarabeos publicados en este artĂ­culo fueron hallados durante las labores de excavaciĂłn en la necrĂłpolis de El Castillo en CastejĂłn (Navarra). Su apariciĂłn en este lugar indica un comercio a travĂ©s del rĂ­o Ebro, navegable en la AntigĂŒedad, entre la zona de la costa y el interior, siendo estos elementos egipcios los mĂĄs septentrionales e interiores encontrados, hasta este momento, en la PenĂ­nsula IbĂ©rica. Piezas de tipo egipcio se han encontrado en otras necrĂłpolis del litoral de la penĂ­nsula.--------------The scarabs reported in this article were found during the excavationÂŽs works at the necropolis of El Castillo in CastejĂłn (Navarra). Its apparition in this place indicates a trade along the river Ebro, navigable in ancient times, between the coast and the inland. Moreover, these Egyptian items represent the most septentrional and inland ever found, up to this moment, in the Iberian Peninsula. Egyptian‐type documents have been found in other necropolis at the Littoral of the Peninsula

    Generation of radially-polarized terahertz pulses for coupling into coaxial waveguides

    Coaxial waveguides exhibit no dispersion and therefore can serve as an ideal channel for transmission of broadband THz pulses. Implementation of THz coaxial waveguide systems however requires THz beams with radially-polarized distribution. We demonstrate the launching of THz pulses into coaxial waveguides using the effect of THz pulse generation at semiconductor surfaces. We find that the radial transient photo-currents produced upon optical excitation of the surface at normal incidence radiate a THz pulse with the field distribution matching the mode of the coaxial waveguide. In this simple scheme, the optical excitation beam diameter controls the spatial profile of the generated radially-polarized THz pulse and allows us to achieve efficient coupling into the TEM waveguide mode in a hollow coaxial THz waveguide. The TEM quasi-single mode THz waveguide excitation and non-dispersive propagation of a short THz pulse is verified experimentally by time-resolved near-field mapping of the THz field at the waveguide output

    Droplet impact on doubly re-entrant structures

    Doubly re-entrant pillars have been demonstrated to possess superior static and dynamic liquid repellency against highly wettable liquids compared to straight or re-entrant pillars. Nevertheless, there has been little insight into how the key structural parameters of doubly re-entrant pillars influence the hydrodynamics of impacting droplets. In this work, we carried out numerical simulations and experimental studies to portray the fundamental physical phenomena that can explain the alteration of the surface wettability from adjusting the design parameters of the doubly re-entrant pillars. On the one hand, three-dimensional multiphase flow simulations of droplet impact were conducted to probe the predominance of the overhang structure in dynamic liquid repellency. On the other hand, the numerical results of droplet impact behaviours are agreed by the experimental results for different pitch sizes and contact angles. Furthermore, the dimensions of the doubly re-entrant pillars, including the height, diameter, overhang length and overhang thickness, were altered to establish their effect on droplet repellency. These findings present the opportunity for manipulations of droplet behaviours by means of improving the critical dimensional parameters of doubly re-entrant structures

    Temperature dependent hyperspectral terahertz imaging of human bone for disease diagnosis

    Water is a fundamental component of many biological systems. The ability to detect water therefore provides great insight into system functionality, particularly in the development of disease. In this work, the high interaction of terahertz radiation with water, paired with the dependence of the dynamics of water molecules with varying temperature, is utilised to monitor changes in the composition of bone tissue. Heterotopic ossification (HO) bone samples and deionised free water are measured using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy for varying environmental temperatures, for prospective use in disease diagnosis
