Association of Dietary Factors with Menstrual Cycle Characteristics
Abnormal menstrual cycle length, pattern and bleed duration are associated with reduced fecundity and increased risk of miscarriage. The menstrual cycle is governed by the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, and nutritional factors may affect menstrual characteristics by influencing the HPO axis. Identifying these factors may lead to cost effective ways to improve reproductive outcomes.
In a cross-sectional analysis of 164 18- to 30-year-old women, we examined the association of adiposity, dietary fat intake and vitamin D status with menstrual cycle characteristics. Adiposity was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA); dietary intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire, and fasting venous samples were collected for measurement of vitamin D.
Most study participants were Caucasians (83%). Approximately 20% of women were overweight (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m2); 6% were obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2). However, when using DXA measurements, 45% of women had a percent total body fat (%TBF) \u3e 32, indicating obesity. The odds of having an irregular cycle pattern were three times higher among women with \u3c 32% TBF compared to those with more adiposity [OR=3.1 95% CI (0.9 to 10.2) p=0.07]. When considering body fat distribution, the odds of an irregular cycle were 2.8 times higher in women with ≤ 41% gynoid fat [OR=2.8 95% CI(0.9, 8.6) p=0.07]; a one standard deviation increase in G/A (gynoid/android) fat mass was associated with a 50% decreased odds of an irregular cycle pattern [OR=0.45 95% CI (0.21, 1.1) p=0.07]. Among dietary factors, higher intake of n-6 PUFA was associated with irregular cycles (β= 0.16, p=0.05) and both short (β= 0.23, p 50nmol/L) was 80% lower among women with irregular cycles compared to those with regular cycles (OR= 0.19; 95% CI: 0.04, 0.92). Our findings suggest that dietary factors are associated with menstrual cycle characteristics, particularly cycle regularity. If our findings are confirmed in larger prospective studies, they suggest that dietary manipulation may be one approach to improving menstrual cycle function
The Triple Procedure :Analysis of Structural, Functional & Refractive Outcome
PURPOSE:To analyse the outcome of Triple procedure(Combined penetrating keratoplasty, cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation) is a surgical technique for visually disabling corneal conditions with associated cataract .METHODS:The medical records of 120 patients who underwent triple procedure between January 2007 and December 2011 in terms of demographic data, past ophthalmic history, indications for surgery were retrospectively reviewed.Salient preoperative data included the initial visual acuity at the time of presentation , slit lamp findings of cornea(scar, haze, vascularisation , stromal folds with bullae ), anterior chamber , lens details , intraocular pressure status ,posterior segment examination with the help of indirect ophthalmoscope or B scan ultrasongraphy.RESULTS:A total of 120 corneal triple procedures performed were included in this study . Of 120 patients , 25 (20.83%)were male and 95 (79.17%) were female.Mean age of these patients was 42.45 +/-15.85 years(range 9 to 75 years ) . The mean postoperative follow up was 15.08+/-12.8 months(range ,1.5 to 49 months ).Failed therapeutic grafts(42.5%)-was the common indication found for surgery .Preoperatively , intraocular pressure was increased in 11(9.16%) patients . Conventional triple procedure in terms of combined penetrating keratoplasty with extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation(PK+ECCE+IOL) was performed in 114 ( 95%) eyes , 01(0.83%) eye underwent keratoplasty with phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation(PK+PE+IOL), and secondary intraocular lens implantation (PK+IOL)in 05 (4.17%)eyes .CONCLUSION:Triple procedure is an effective surgical option in corneal diseases associated with cataract. It provides an optimal visual and refractive outcome especially in high risk grafts situation
How Songbirds Learn to Sing Provides Suggestions for Designing Team Projects for Computing Courses
Understanding how our brain works and how we learn is perhaps one of the greatest challenges facing twenty-first computer science. Songbirds are good candidates for trying to unravel some of this mystery. Over the last decade, a large amount of research has been made to better understand how songbirds learn complex songs. The Canary (Serinus canaria) and the Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata) have been widely used bird models to study these brain and behavior relationships. Like songbirds, we humans are vocal and social learners. In such learners, the development of communication is initially steered by social interactions with adult tutors. In songbirds, song development is further shaped through interactions with peers and by attending to the consequences of others interacting. In this paper, we review three key areas in a bird’s brain which perform three specific roles (i.e. actor, experimenter and critic). Similarly, there are three roles (i.e. coder, designer and tester) that are being played in software firms for developing products. We can bring the same roles into the computer science classroom by designing a term project which involves students who play these three different roles. We demonstrate our methodology by showing how it works in a senior level computer science course. We then discuss and qualitatively show the benefits of such a role-based project design
