(DIPF/Orig.

Ability achievement discrepancies: diagnosis and future implications

    Get PDF
The purpose of the current study was threefold: first to determine if the predicted achievement method is a more accurate statistical method to determine ability achievement discrepancies than the simple difference method; second to determine if the VIQ score on the WISC 111 could predict achievement level as accurately as the FSIQ score; and third to assess the current achievement level of four individuals previously diagnosed with a reading disability. The sample used in this study consisted of eight children who were assessed at the Rowan College Learning and Assessment Center. The statistical procedures employed were based on the WIAT manual\u27s tables (pg.188) and Alfonso\u27s tables (1993). The significance of the findings was determined according to the critical tables provided in the WIAT manual (pg 192). Based on the statistical procedures the following results were determined. The predicted achievement method and the simple difference method detected the same significant ability achievement discrepancies. The VIQ was found to be as accurate a predictor of achievement as the FSIQ. Those individuals previously diagnosed as reading disabled did not continue to demonstrate significant achievement ability discrepancies

Individual, Child, and Socioeconomic Factors: Effects on Custody Litigation

Given that the United States has one of the highest divorce rates in the world, it is imperative to determine affects it may have on the population, as well as associated events linked to the divorce process (Kennedy & Ruggles, 2014; Kreider & Fields, 2002). One such event is that of custody decisions in the divorcing family, as children’s time and placements need to be secured amidst the change. Although there are many different custody arrangement types, one of the most discussed is that of physical custody and how it is determined by courts. There are many variables considered by the legal system, however, this study sought to determine if individual parental factors (i.e., age and petitioner status), child factors (i.e., number of children, age, and sex), and socioeconomic factors (i.e., parent employment status and income) together were associated with certain types of physical custody arrangements (i.e., shared, sole maternal, or sole paternal arrangements). To investigate how these factors contribute to physical custody decisions, I conducted a multinomial logistic regression analysis of a secondary data source from the Parenting After Divorce Study that took place from 2013 to 2014 (Ferraro et al., 2016). This data included both mothers and fathers who were undergoing divorce and custody proceedings in a southeastern U.S. state. Results indicated that only the main effect of petitioner and, after an exploratory analysis, the total number of children in a family are associated with physical custody outcomes. Findings are discussed in the context of extant literature, as well as limitations and future research directions

How youth\u27s profiles of extracurricular and leisure activity affect their social development and academic achievement

Research has shown that participation in extracurricular activities has a positive effect on adolescents\u27 social behaviour and academic performance; however, the reciprocal influence of extracurricular activities and leisure on the development of adolescents\u27 academic performance and social behaviour is unclear. In our study, we investigate the effect of school based and out-of-school leisure activities on adolescent\u27s social and scholastic development. We also explore how students\u27 gender, socioeconomic status and ethnicity influence their choice of, and engagement in activities. A sample of 5278 students (females 50%; migrant background 26%) filled in questionnaires in grade 5 and 7 and provided personal background information as well as evidence of their engagement in extracurricular and leisure activities, their social behaviour and academic performance. Using latent class analysis, we distinguished five identity-related patterns of engagement in extracurricular and leisure activities among 5th-graders. We found a connection between adolescents\u27 gender, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity and their choice of, and engagement in, extracurricular and leisure activities, social behaviour and grades. We also identified a link between adolescents\u27 patterns of engagement in extracurricular and leisure activities and developmental tendencies in their social behaviour and scholastic achievement between grades 5 and 7. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-Related Pathways in Hemato-Lymphoid Malignancies

    Get PDF
Angiogenesis is essential for malignant tumor growth. This has been documented for solid tumors, and there is an emerging evidence suggesting that tumor progression of hematolymphoid malignancies also depends on the induction of new blood vessel formation. The most important proangiogenic agent is vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), activating VEGF receptors 1 and 2. The available data on angiogenesis in hemato-lymphoid malignancies, such as acute leukemias, myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative neoplasms, multiple myeloma, and lymphomas, point towards the significance of autocrine and paracrine VEGF-mediated effects for proliferation and survival of leukemia/lymphoma cells in addition to tumor vascularization. Antiangiogenic strategies have become an important therapeutic modality for solid tumors. Several antiangiogenic agents targeting VEGF-related pathways are also being utilized in clinical trials for the treatment of hemato-lymphoid malignancies, and in some instances these pathways have emerged as promising therapeutic targets. This review summarizes recent advances in the basic understanding of the role of angiogenesis in hemato-lymphoid malignancies and the translation of such basic findings into clinical studies

Neural Mechanisms of Reading Facial Emotions in Young and Older Adults

    Get PDF
The ability to read and appropriately respond to emotions in others is central for successful social interaction. Young and older adults are better at identifying positive than negative facial expressions and also expressions of young than older faces. Little, however, is known about the neural processes associated with reading different emotions, particularly in faces of different ages, in samples of young and older adults. During fMRI, young and older participants identified expressions in happy, neutral, and angry young and older faces. The results suggest a functional dissociation of ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) in reading facial emotions that is largely comparable in young and older adults: Both age groups showed greater vmPFC activity to happy compared to angry or neutral faces, which was positively correlated with expression identification for happy compared to angry faces. In contrast, both age groups showed greater activity in dmPFC to neutral or angry than happy faces which was negatively correlated with expression identification for neutral compared to happy faces. A similar region of dmPFC showed greater activity for older than young faces, but no brain-behavior correlations. Greater vmPFC activity in the present study may reflect greater affective processing involved in reading happy compared to neutral or angry faces. Greater dmPFC activity may reflect more cognitive control involved in decoding and/or regulating negative emotions associated with neutral or angry than happy, and older than young, faces

A New Analysis of the Exoplanet Hosting System HD 6434

The current goal of exoplanetary science is not only focused on detecting but characterizing planetary systems in hopes of understanding how they formed, evolved, and relate to the Solar System. The Transit Ephemeris Refinement and Monitoring Survey (TERMS) combines both radial velocity (RV) and photometric data in order to achieve unprecedented ground-based precision in the fundamental properties of nearby, bright, exoplanet-hosting systems. Here we discuss HD 6434 and its planet, HD 6434b, which has a M_p*sin(i) = 0.44 M_J mass and orbits every 22.0170 days with an eccentricity of 0.146. We have combined previously published RV data with new measurements to derive a predicted transit duration of ~6 hrs, or 0.25 days, and a transit probability of 4%. Additionally, we have photometrically observed the planetary system using both the 0.9m and 1.0m telescopes at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, covering 75.4% of the predicted transit window. We reduced the data using the automated TERMS Photometry Pipeline, developed to ensure consistent and accurate results. We determine a dispositive null result for the transit of HD 6434b, excluding the full transit to a depth of 0.9% and grazing transit due to impact parameter limitations to a depth of 1.6%Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, accepted to A
