    Jaina Figures and the Figuration of Maya Social Roles: A Study of SAMA Object 64.289.94

    The site of Jaina island, for which Jaina figures are named, is unique in comparison to the sites where other Maya ceramic figurines have been found due to the scale and specially developed burial culture involving ceramic figurines that developed there (McVicker 2011: 211). The exceptional and artistic renderings and context for these figures from Campeche, Mexico has led to problems of looting and forgeries that have created obstacles for scholars trying to understand this body of work. A careful consideration of the stylistic features and grouping of individual figurines to determine their authenticity and meaning is therefore a step that can be undertaken to attempt to chip away at this problem. Such an opportunity for study exists in SAMA 64.289.94, a Jaina figurine from the San Antonio Museum of Art’s off-exhibition collection. Considerations of style, form, burial context, ritual use, and representation in the system of Maya iconography and cosmology building off of past scholarship will be considered to come to an interpretation of this figure’s practical and more theoretical purposes of representation. In this paper, I argue that the Jaina-style figurine SAMA 64.289.94 embodies the intersection of socio-economic and ritual life symbolically centered in the figure of the Maya woman and her specific role within cosmological ideology, demonstrating the value of Jaina figurines with the potential to enrich our understanding of the ancient Maya

    Making the Most of Mealtimes (M3): protocol of a multi-centre cross-sectional study of food intake and its determinants in older adults living in long term care homes

    Background: Older adults living in long term care (LTC) homes are nutritionally vulnerable, often consuming insufficient energy, macro-and micronutrients to sustain their health and function. Multiple factors are proposed to influence food intake, yet our understanding of these diverse factors and their interactions are limited. The purpose of this paper is to fully describe the protocol used to examine determinants of food and fluid intake among older adults participating in the Making the Most of Mealtimes (M3) study. Methods: A conceptual framework that considers multi-level influences on mealtime experience, meal quality and meal access was used to design this multi-site cross-sectional study. Data were collected from 639 participants residing in 32 LTC homes in four Canadian provinces by trained researchers. Food intake was assessed with three-days of weighed food intake (main plate items), as well as estimations of side dishes, beverages and snacks and compared to the Dietary Reference Intake. Resident-level measures included: nutritional status, nutritional risk; disease conditions, medication, and diet prescriptions; oral health exam, signs of swallowing difficulty and olfactory ability; observed eating behaviours, type and number of staff assisting with eating; and food and foodservice satisfaction. Function, cognition, depression and pain were assessed using interRAI LTCF with selected items completed by researchers with care staff. Care staff completed a standardized person-directed care questionnaire. Researchers assessed dining rooms for physical and psychosocial aspects that could influence food intake. Management from each site completed a questionnaire that described the home, menu development, food production, out-sourcing of food, staffing levels, and staff training. Hierarchical regression models, accounting for clustering within province, home and dining room will be used to determine factors independently associated with energy and protein intake, as proxies for intake. Proportions of residents at risk of inadequate diets will also be determined. Discussion: This rigorous and comprehensive data collection in a large and diverse sample will provide, for the first time, the opportunity to consider important modifiable factors associated with poor food intake of residents in LTC.     Education delivery in higher education institutions was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for healthcare students whose continuing education is imperative to maintain a well-educated healthcare workforce. Emergency remote teaching, without prior contingency planning, was developed and adapted promptly for the circumstances. We investigated the effectiveness of alternative education delivery strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure medical, dental, nursing and pharmacy students acquired the relevant knowledge to become effective practitioners, able to translate learning into clinical practice, and how this informs either further planned education delivery or adaptations in emergencies

    Navigating Mealtimes to Meet Public Health Mandates in Long-Term Care During COVID-19: Staff Perspectives

    Context: Mealtimes in long-term care (LTC) settings play a pivotal role in the daily lives of residents. The COVID-19 pandemic and the required precautionary infection control mandates influenced many aspects of resident care within LTC homes, including mealtimes. Limited research has been conducted on how mealtimes in LTC were affected during the pandemic from staff perspectives. Objective: To understand the experiences of LTC staff on providing mealtimes during the pandemic. Methods: Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with 22 staff involved with mealtimes between February and April 2021. Transcripts were analysed using interpretive description. Findings: Three themes emerged from the analysis: (1) recognizing the influence of homes’ contextual factors. Home size, availability of resources, staffing levels and resident care needs influenced mealtime practices during the pandemic; (2) perceiving a compromised mealtime experience for residents and staff. Staff were frustrated and described residents as being dissatisfied with mealtime and pandemic-initiated practices as they were task-focused and socially isolating and (3) prioritizing mealtimes while trying to stay afloat. An ‘all hands-on deck’ approach, maintaining connections and being adaptive were strategies identified to mitigate the negative impact of the mandates on mealtimes during the pandemic. Limitations: Perspectives were primarily from nutrition and food service personnel. Implications: Overly restrictive public health measures resulted in mealtime practices that prioritized tasks and safety over residents’ quality of life. Learning from this pandemic experience, homes can protect the relational mealtime experience for residents by fostering teamwork, open and frequent communication and being flexible and adaptive

    Relationship between eating behaviors and physical activity of preschoolers and their peers: a systematic review

    Abstract: Objectives: Children learn by observing and imitating others, meaning that their eating behaviors and physical activity may be influenced by their peers. This paper systematically reviews how preschoolers’ eating behaviors and physical activity relate to their peers’ behaviors, and discusses avenues for future research. Methods: Six databases were searched for quantitative, peer-reviewed studies published up to July 2015 reporting on the correlates, predictors or effectiveness of peers on eating behaviors and physical activity in preschoolers. Risk of bias was independently assessed by two evaluators using the Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies. Results: Thirteen articles were included: six measured physical activity, and seven assessed eating behaviors. Four of the six physical activity studies reported that children were more active when peers were present, while large peer group size was negatively associated with physical activity in two cross-sectional studies. All nutrition interventions reported that children’s eating behaviors may be influenced by their peers. Conclusions: Although supported by weak evidence, peers appear to influence children’s eating behaviors and physical activity. However, this influence may be moderated by the number of peers, gender, age and the perceived status of the role models. Future obesity prevention interventions should consider involving peers as agents for positive eating behaviors and physical activity in preschoolers

    "Monkey see, monkey do" : peers’ behaviors predict preschoolers’ physical activity and dietary intake in childcare centers

    Abstract : Preschoolers observe and imitate the behaviors of those who are similar to them. Therefore, peers may be important role models for preschoolers’ dietary intake and physical activity in childcare centers. This study examined whether peers’ behaviors predict change in preschoolers’ dietary intake and physical activity in childcare centers over 9 months. A total of 238 preschoolers (3 to 5 years old) from 23 childcare centers in two Canadian provinces provided data at the beginning (October 2013 and 2014) and the end (June 2014 and 2015) of a 9-month period for this longitudinal study. Dietary intake was collected at lunch using weighed plate waste and digital photography on two consecutive weekdays. Physical activity was assessed using accelerometers over five days. Multilevel linear regressions were used to estimate the influence of peers’ behaviors on preschoolers’ change in dietary intake and physical activity over 9 months. Results showed that preschoolers whose dietary intake or physical activity level deviated the most from those of their peers at the beginning of the year demonstrated greater change in their intakes and activity levels over 9 months (all p values<0.05), which enabled them to become more similar to their peers. This study suggests that preschoolers’ dietary intake and physical activity may be influenced by the behaviors of their peers in childcare centers. Since peers could play an important role in promoting healthy eating behaviors and physical activity in childcare centers, future studies should test interventions based on positive role modeling by children

    Prevalence and Determinants of Poor Food Intake of Residents Living in Long-Term Care

This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Poor food intake is known to lead to malnutrition in long-term care homes (LTCH), yet multilevel determinants of food intake are not fully understood, hampering development of interventions that can maintain the nutritional status of residents. This study measures energy and protein intake of LTCH residents, describes prevalence of diverse covariates, and the association of covariates with food intake. Multisite cross-sectional study. Thirty-two nursing homes from 4 provinces in Canada. From a sample of 639 residents (20 randomly selected per home), 628 with complete data were included in analyses. Three days of weighed food intake (main plate, estimated beverages and side dishes, snacks) were completed to measure energy and protein intake. Health records were reviewed for diagnoses, medications, and diet prescription. Mini-Nutritional Assessment-SF was used to determine nutritional risk. Oral health and dysphagia risk were assessed with standardized protocols. The Edinburgh-Feeding Questionnaire (Ed-FED) was used to identify eating challenges; mealtime interactions with staff were assessed with the Mealtime Relational Care Checklist. Mealtime observations recorded duration of meals and assistance received. Dining environments were assessed for physical features using the Dining Environment Audit Protocol, and the Mealtime Scan was used to record mealtime experience and ambiance. Staff completed the Person Directed Care questionnaire, and managers completed a survey describing features of the home and food services. Hierarchical multivariate regression determined predictors of energy and protein intake adjusted for other covariates. Average age of participants was 86.3 ± 7.8 years and 69% were female. Median energy intake was 1571.9 ± 411.93 kcal and protein 58.4 ± 18.02 g/d. There was a significant interaction between being prescribed a pureed/liquidized diet and eating challenges for energy intake. Age, number of eating challenges, pureed/liquidized diet, and sometimes requiring eating assistance were negatively associated with energy and protein intake. Being male, a higher Mini-Nutritional Assessment–Short Form score, often requiring eating assistance, and being on a dementia care unit were positively associated with energy and protein intake. Energy intake alone was negatively associated with homelikeness scores but positively associated with person-centered care practices, whereas protein intake was positively associated with more dietitian time. This is the first study to consider resident, unit, staff, and home variables that are associated with food intake. Findings indicate that interventions focused on pureed food, restorative dining, eating assistance, and person-centered care practices may support improved food intake and should be the target for further research.Canadian Institutes for Health Research || 201403MOP-326892-NUT-CENA-2546

    A multilevel intervention to increase physical activity and improve healthy eating and physical literacy among young children (ages 3-5) attending early childcare centres: the Healthy Start-Départ Santé cluster randomised controlled trial study protocol

    Abstract: Background: Childhood obesity is a growing concern for public health. Given a majority of children in many countries spend approximately 30 h per week in early childcare centers, this environment represents a promising setting for implementing strategies to foster healthy behaviours for preventing and controlling childhood obesity. Healthy Start-Départ Santé was designed to promote physical activity, physical literacy, and healthy eating among preschoolers. The objectives of this study are to assess the effectiveness of the Healthy Start-Départ Santé intervention in improving physical activity levels, physical literacy, and healthy eating among preschoolers attending early childcare centers. Methods/Design: This study follows a cluster randomized controlled trial design in which the childcare centers are randomly assigned to receive the intervention or serve as usual care controls. The Healthy Start-Départ Santé intervention is comprised of interlinked components aiming to enable families and educators to integrate physical activity and healthy eating in the daily lives of young children by influencing factors at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, community, physical environment and policy levels. The intervention period, spanning 6-8 months, is preceded and followed by data collections. Participants are recruited from 61 childcare centers in two Canadian provinces, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan. Centers eligible for this study have to prepare and provide meals for lunch and have at least 20 children between the ages of 3 and 5. Centers are excluded if they have previously received a physical activity or nutrition promoting intervention. Eligible centers are stratified by province, geographical location (urban or rural) and language (English or French), then recruited and randomized using a one to one protocol for each stratum. Data collection is ongoing. The primary study outcomes are assessed using accelerometers (physical activity levels), the Test of Gross Motor Development-II (physical literacy), and digital photography-assisted weighted plate waste (food intake). Discussion: The multifaceted approach of Healthy Start-Départ Santé positions it well to improve the physical literacy and both dietary and physical activity behaviors of children attending early childcare centers. The results of this study will be of relevance given the overwhelming prevalence of overweight and obesity in children worldwide. Trial registration: NCT02375490 (ClinicalTrials.gov registry)
