J-Class Abelian Semigroups of Matrices on C^n and Hypercyclicity

We give a characterization of hypercyclic finitely generated abelian semigroups of matrices on C^n using the extended limit sets (the J-sets). Moreover we construct for any n\geq 2 an abelian semigroup G of GL(n;C) generated by n + 1 diagonal matrices which is locally hypercyclic but not hypercyclic and such that JG(e_k) = C^n for every k = 1; : : : ; n, where (e_1; : : : ; e_n) is the canonical basis of C^n. This gives a negative answer to a question raised by Costakis and Manoussos.Comment: 10 page

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of remifentanil in preventing succinylcholine-induced myalgia in humans. Methods: Sixty healthy adults scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia were enrolled in a double-blind study and randomly allocated to two groups of thirty patients. Patients in Group I (remifentanil group) were pretreated with remifentanil 1 ìg/kg one minute prior to induction of anesthesia, while patients in Group II (saline group) received an equivalent volume of saline. Anesthesia was induced in both groups with fentanyl 1 µg/kg, propofol 2.0 mg/kg and succinylcholine 1.5 mg/kg. Postoperative myalgia was assessed 12, 24, and 48 h after induction and graded as nil, mild, moderate, or severe. Results: Fifty nine patients completed the study. The demographic data for both groups were comparable (p > 0.05). Postoperative myalgia at 12, 24, and 48 h after induction were 34.5, 34.5 and 14.1 % in group I, and 60, 53.4 and 30 % in group II, respectively (p > 0.05).Conclusion: Prophylactic use of remifentanil 1 µg/kg intravenously is ineffective in the prevention of postoperative myalgiaKeywords: Remifentanil, Succinylcholine, Myalgia, Propofol, Prophylaxi

The occurrence of dental caries is associated with atherosclerosis

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have suggested that marginal periodontitis is a risk factor for developing atherosclerosis. The objective of this study was to determine whether caries may also be associated with atherosclerosis. METHODS: The computed tomography data sets of 292 consecutive patients, 137 women and 155 men with a mean age of 54.1±17.3 years, were analyzed. Caries were quantified based on the number of decayed surfaces of all the teeth, and periodontitis was quantified on the basis of the horizontal bone loss in the jaw. The presence of chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) was assessed, and the aortic atherosclerotic burden was quantified using a calcium scoring method. RESULTS: The patients wit

Staphylococcal Enterotoxin A Induces Small Clusters of HLA-DR1 on B Cells

The superantigen SEA causes non-specific hyperactivation of T and B cells at low concentrations. Studies of mutants or soluble proteins suggest SEA is bivalent for its ligand, MHC class II. However, the interaction between these molecules on intact cells is unknown. On primary mouse B cells expressing the MHC class II allele HLA-DR1, measurements of Förster Resonance Energy Transfer between HLA-DR1 molecules on SEA-treated cells indicated specific clustering, not observed in untreated or monovalent superantigen treated cells. Tomographic visualization and electron microscopy of immunogold-labeled SEA-treated B cells revealed small clusters of surface HLA-DR1 (≤4 gold labels). These results present direct visual evidence of SEA-mediated clustering of MHC class II molecules on treated antigen presenting cells, and provide a new structural approach to addressing problems of this nature

Cellulose nanocrystals in smart and stimuli-responsive materials: a review

    Get PDF
“Smart” stimuli-responsive materials have been the subject of decades of research because of their versatility and particularly their use in medical and sensing applications. While these materials are often composed exclusively of responsive polymers, there is growing interest in smart hybrid systems that contain at least two distinct components, each contributing uniquely to the final material. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have found extensive application in smart hybrid systems, as CNCs can both contribute to the mechanical and optical properties of the system and bear stimuli-responsive surface modifications. This review covers the recent body of work on CNC-containing smart hybrid systems, with attention given to the fabrication methodologies that have been employed to generate both physically and optically adaptable CNC-based smart systems. Additionally, the unique application of CNCs in self-healing composites and shape memory polymers will be discussed.Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canad

Soils, Science and Community ActioN (SoilSCAN): a citizen science tool to empower community-led land management change in East Africa

Pastoralist communities worldwide face complex challenges regarding food and feed productivity. Primary production systems are under stress, nutritional choices are changing and the relationship between development and agriculture is undergoing profound transformation. Under increasing pressure from climate and land use change, East African agro-pastoral systems are approaching a tipping point in terms of land degradation. There is an urgent need for evidence-led sustainable land management interventions to reverse degradation of natural resources that support food and water security. A key barrier, however, is a lack of high spatial resolution soil health data wherein collecting such information for each individual community is beyond their means. In this context, we tested whether bridging such data gaps could be achieved through a coordinated programme at the boundary between participation and citizen science. Key outputs included a community-led trial of a hand-held soil scanner, which highlighted a range of positive benefits and practical challenges in using this technology in this context, with identification of some potential solutions; and a targeted soil organic matter and nutrient status dataset in a small catchment-based community setting. The results show that if the practical challenges can be resolved, use of portable soil scanner technology has the potential to fill key knowledge gaps and thereby improve resilience to the threat of land degradation through locally responsive farmer and community decision-making
