Charging of flexible solar array substrates in kilovolt electron beams

    Get PDF
A series of survey tests were conducted to evaluate samples of flexible solar arrays. The samples used woven carbon fibers and/or coatings to increase the surface conductivity of the KAPTON substrate and thereby reduce surface charging. Four different samples were evaluated by exposing them to monoenergetic electron beams of 2 to 20 KeV at a current density of 1 nA sq cm. Simulated eclipse tests were also conducted. The results were as expected; the more continuous the conductive pattern, the lower the surface charging

Testing of typical spacecraft materials in a simulated substorm environment

The test specimens were spacecraft paints, silvered Teflon, thermal blankets, and solar array segments. The samples, ranging in size from 300 to 1000 sq cm were exposed to monoenergetic electron energies from 2 to 20 keV at a current density of 1 NA/sq cm. The samples generally behaved as capacitors with strong voltage gradient at their edges. The charging characteristics of the silvered Teflon, Kapton, and solar cell covers were controlled by the secondary emission characteristics. Insulators that did not discharge were the spacecraft paints and the quartz fiber cloth thermal blanket sample. All other samples did experience discharges when the surface voltage reached -8 to -16kV. The discharges were photographed. The breakdown voltage for each sample was determined and the average energy lost in the discharge was computed

Synthesis and Characterization of the Metal–Organic Framework CIM-80 for Organic Compounds Adsorption

Metal–organic frameworks (MOF) are a new type of porous materials that have great potential for adsorption of voltaic organic compounds (VOCs). These types of materials composed of metal ions and organic ligands are easy to synthesize, have high surface areas, their surface chemistry can be adjusted to the desired application, and they can also have good chemical and thermal stability. Therefore, this work focuses on the synthesis of a highly hydrophobic MOF material called CIM-80, a porous material that is made up of the Al3+ cation and the mesaconate linker. This MOF has a B.E.T. of approximately 800 m2/g and has potential applications for the adsorption of hydrophobic organic compounds. However, its synthesis is expensive and very dirty. Therefore, we have studied the synthesis conditions necessary to achieve high synthesis yields (85%) and materials with high crystallinity and accessible porosity. To achieve these results, we have used urea as a mild deprotonation reagent and modulator as an alternative to NaOH, which is traditionally used for the synthesis of this MOF. Once the synthesis of this material was controlled, its adsorption/desorption behavior of water and organic compounds such as toluene, cyclohexane and m-xylene was studied by means of vapor adsorption isotherms. The results show the hydrophobic character of the material and the greater affinity the material has toward aliphatic compounds than toward aromatic ones, with toluene being the most adsorbed compound, followed by cyclohexane and m-xylene.Authors acknowledge financial support by MINECO (Spain) through the project MAT2017-86992-R and “Ministerio de Ciencia e innovación” (PID2020-116998RB-I00). Effect of the Synthesis Conditions of MIL-100(Fe) on Its Catalytic Properties and Stability under Reaction Conditions

MIL-100(Fe) is a metal–organic framework (MOF) characterized by the presence of Lewis acid and Fe(II/III) redox sites. In this work, different synthesis methods for the preparation of MIL-100(Fe) are studied. Depending on the source of fluorine, different phases can be obtained: MIL-100(Fe) and an Fe trimesate with unknown structure which we call Fe(BTC). These materials were characterized using numerous techniques and applied in the reaction of CO2 cycloaddition with epichlorohydrin, a reaction catalyzed by Lewis acid sites. It was observed that samples with more Fe(BTC) phase were more active in the reaction. However, all samples, under reaction conditions, transformed into a less active phase. The authors acknowledge financial support by MINECO (Spain) through the project MAT2017-86992-R, “Ministerio de Ciencia e innovación” (PID2020-116998RB-I00), Ministerio de Educación y Formación Profesional (PRX21/00407), and Conselleria de Innovacion, Universidades, Ciencia y Sociedad Digital (CIPROM/2021/022)

The livestock roles in the wellbeing of rural communities of Timor-Leste

    Get PDF
The livestock species play very important economic and socio-cultural roles for the wellbeing of rural households, such as food supply, source of income, asset saving, source of employment, soil fertility, livelihoods, transport, agricultural traction, agricultural diversification and sustainable agricultural production. The aim of this work was to identify and characterize the different roles that livestock and livestock species play in rural communities of Timor-Leste, highlighting the importance of animal production for the wellbeing and rural development, and relate the functions performed by livestock production with economic, social and cultural attributes of the communities. The data used in this study were collected in 2011 through a questionnaire survey in three rural communities in the district of Bobonaro, namely in a mountain area, an irrigation plain and a coastal zone, and were complemented with secondary data. Livestock production in Timor-Leste is predominantly familiar being chickens, pigs, goats, cattle, horses, buffaloes and sheep the main species. Beyond the economic function, each livestock species also performs social and cultural functions

The main goal of this study was to determine if there is a significant relationship between work values and organizational commitment among employees of UM Tagum College using quantitative non-experimental research design utilizing correlational technique with 106 employees of UM Tagum College using purposive sampling technique in determining the respondents. Mean and Pearson (r) were the statistical tools used for data treatment. Results showed a very high level of both intrinsic and extrinsic work values among employees of UM Tagum College. Moreover, high level of organizational commitment was attributed among employees of UM Tagum College. Lastly, the result further showed that intrinsic work values and extrinsic work values have significant relationship with organizational commitment among employees of UM Tagum College
