Hidden Markov Model for Automatic Transcription of MIDI Signals

    Get PDF
This paper describes a Hidden Markov Model (HMM)-based method of automatic transcription of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) signals of performed music. The problem is formulated as recognition of a given sequence of fluctuating note durations to find the most likely intended note sequence utilizing the modern continuous speech recognition technique. Combining a stochastic model of deviating note durations and a stochastic grammar representing possible sequences of notes, the maximum likelihood estimate of the note sequence is searched in terms of Viterbi algorithm. The same principle is successfully applied to a joint problem of bar line allocation, time measure recognition, and tempo estimation. Finally, durations of consecutive n notes are combined to form a "rhythm vector" representing tempo-free relative durations of the notes and treated in the same framework. Significant improvements compared with conventional "quantization" techniques are shown

[Background] Use of the Glatzel mirror for measuring expiratory nasal flow in preschool children has the disadvantage of vagueness, and the mirror may induce fear and inhibition of interest in those children. In response to these limitations, we developed a new device with dual cameras for measuring expiratory nasal flow in 2 to 6 year old children. The aim of this study is to compare the Glatzel mirror and the new device, in terms of accurate assessment of expiratory nasal flow, children’s feelings, and correlation to each child’s profile. [Methods] This study evaluated 20 cleft lip and palate patients and 21 healthy children aged between 2 and 6 (under 7) years. After consent was granted, a 4-week screening period was undertaken followed by inspection at weeks 8, 16, 24, and 32. Each inspection was conducted while the children were asked to pronounce various sounds and comprised three stages: i) use of the Glatzel mirror, ii) subjective visual assessment using the new device, and iii) image recording by dual cameras of the new device. Questionnaires for the new device were administered at the initial and final inspections. To contrast the results between the Glatzel mirror and the new device, the numbers that indicated values of subjective visual assessment and camera assessment greater than the assessment values of the Glatzel mirror were compared. For measuring the children’s responses to the new device compared with those to the Glatzel mirror, the answers to the questionnaires were compared. For the comparison of the children’s profiles (age and sex) and feelings, the numbers of subjects who could use the new device were measured. [Results] The camera assessment of the new device indicated significantly greater values than that of the Glatzel mirror (P < 0.05). The feelings of the subjects to the new device mostly improved as the study progressed. Subjects aged 3 years and older were generally able to use the new device from the initial inspection. For both sexes, as the inspection progressed, the number occasions of successful use increased. [Conclusion] This study demonstrated the superiority of the new device with dual cameras to the Glatzel mirror in terms of functionality and attitude of children

In 2020, we disclosed each policy regarding industry-academia-government collaboration and intellectual property management. As for activities, in the latter half of 2019, we exhibited at BioJapan as usual, presented at the new technology briefing session at the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), participated in the Okayama Research-Park presentation, and exhibited at the Okayama Technology Exhibition (OTEX). In addition, KMS Medical Ark with MTO, an industry-academia collaboration matching event hosted by our medical school, was also held. However, since then, the new coronavirus infection has been remarkable, and in 2020, we just joined mainly online events, for example, the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry Next Generation Medical System Industrialization Forum and the 6th DSANJ Digital Bio Conference and Face to Face Meeting. We introduced the researchers\u27 seeds there (D-Bio Digital & F2F). The annual Faculty Development (FD) meeting was also held by online on September 24th. Although some products from KMS Medical Ark have been delayed due to the influence of COVID-19, the matching business is currently continuing. In 2020, BioJapan will also be canceled and OTEX will be canceled, and seeds will be announced only as online-events. We canceled the presentation at BioJapan 2020. The Okayama Technology Exhibition (OTEX) has been canceled. We will plan to present our research seeds only in online-events. The KMS Medical Ark with MTO has also decided to hold it online. Regarding inventions and patent applications, the situation varies from year to year. In the future, we would like to continue making efforts toward the promotion of industry-academia-government collaboration projects within the university and the recommendation of intellectual property, etc., based on accurate judgments that match the social situation
