    Gauge Is More Than Mathematical Redundancy

    Physical systems may couple to other systems through variables that are not gauge invariant. When we split a gauge system into two subsystems, the gauge-invariant variables of the two subsystems have less information than the gauge-invariant variables of the original system; the missing information regards degrees of freedom that express relations between the subsystems. All this shows that gauge invariance is a formalization of the relational nature of physical degrees of freedom. The recent developments on boundary variables and boundary charges are clarified by this observation

    Under culture conditions, lipid composition and specifically, the fatty acid profile of reared paralarvae is significantly different from hatchlings. Therefore, comparing wild paralarvae and reared paralarvae of similar age would allow us to elucidate if the changes in fatty acid profile are related with a non-optimal prey composition or are caused by the normal development. The aim of this study was analyze, for the very first time, the fatty acid profile of wild Octopus vulgaris paralarvae individually, determining for each paralarvae their age through deposition of daily increments on lateral hood surface of the beaks. The main goal is to clear up lipid requirements of paralarvae and optimise the diet of reared paralarvae

    Influence of contaminant-spiked polyethylene-type microplastics on the growth and primary production of the freshwater phytoplankton species Scenedesmus armatus and Microcystis aeruginosa

    Microplastic pollution and its ecological impact on the aquatic environment are a current focus of research in the scientific community. These microplastics may adsorb contaminants discharged into the aquatic environment, thereby serving as a sink and source for the dissemination of these associated chemical contaminants. However, knowledge about the potential risks of microplastics and associated chemical contaminants on aquatic biota, especially on primary freshwater producers, remains to be explored. In this study, the impact of a polyethylene microplastic type (MP) associated with amoxicillin, ibuprofen, sertraline and simazine (OCs) on the cell growth and photosynthetic activity of the green algae Scenedesmus armatus and the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa was evaluated after 28 days of exposure. The results show that all the organic contaminants and their respective MP-OC complexes induced stress on cell growth after 28 days of exposure, except when the cyanobacterial strain was exposed to amoxicillin and ibuprofen. Similarly, photosynthetic activity was affected by exposure to MP-OC complexes, with the most evident effect on cellular respiration in the cyanobacterial strain and on net photosynthesis in the green algae strain. Additionally, the ability of the M. aeruginosa strain to synthesize microcystin was significantly reduced. These results show that the formation of MP-OC complexes could reduce their adverse effects, although there is wide variability depending on both the type of organic contaminant and the photosynthetic organisms involved, so further studies are needed to better understand the interactions between these aquatic contaminants

    Crowding and the shape of COVID-19 epidemics

    The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is straining public health systems worldwide, and major non-pharmaceutical interventions have been implemented to slow its spread1,2,3,4. During the initial phase of the outbreak, dissemination of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was primarily determined by human mobility from Wuhan, China5,6. Yet empirical evidence on the effect of key geographic factors on local epidemic transmission is lacking7. In this study, we analyzed highly resolved spatial variables in cities, together with case count data, to investigate the role of climate, urbanization and variation in interventions. We show that the degree to which cases of COVID-19 are compressed into a short period of time (peakedness of the epidemic) is strongly shaped by population aggregation and heterogeneity, such that epidemics in crowded cities are more spread over time, and crowded cities have larger total attack rates than less populated cities. Observed differences in the peakedness of epidemics are consistent with a meta-population model of COVID-19 that explicitly accounts for spatial hierarchies. We paired our estimates with globally comprehensive data on human mobility and predict that crowded cities worldwide could experience more prolonged epidemics

    Targeting a Newly Established Spontaneous Feline Fibrosarcoma Cell Line by Gene Transfer

    Fibrosarcoma is a deadly disease in cats and is significantly more often located at classical vaccine injections sites. More rare forms of spontaneous non-vaccination site (NSV) fibrosarcomas have been described and have been found associated to genetic alterations. Purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of adenoviral gene transfer in NVS fibrosarcoma. We isolated and characterized a NVS fibrosarcoma cell line (Cocca-6A) from a spontaneous fibrosarcoma that occurred in a domestic calico cat. The feline cells were karyotyped and their chromosome number was counted using a Giemsa staining. Adenoviral gene transfer was verified by western blot analysis. Flow cytometry assay and Annexin-V were used to study cell-cycle changes and cell death of transduced cells. Cocca-6A fibrosarcoma cells were morphologically and cytogenetically characterized. Giemsa block staining of metaphase spreads of the Cocca-6A cells showed deletion of one of the E1 chromosomes, where feline p53 maps. Semi-quantitative PCR demonstrated reduction of p53 genomic DNA in the Cocca-6A cells. Adenoviral gene transfer determined a remarkable effect on the viability and growth of the Cocca-6A cells following single transduction with adenoviruses carrying Mda-7/IL-24 or IFN-γ or various combination of RB/p105, Ras-DN, IFN-γ, and Mda-7 gene transfer. Therapy for feline fibrosarcomas is often insufficient for long lasting tumor eradication. More gene transfer studies should be conducted in order to understand if these viral vectors could be applicable regardless the origin (spontaneous vs. vaccine induced) of feline fibrosarcomas

    ESTIMACIÓN DE LA EDAD Y DETERMINACIÓN DEL PERFIL DE ÁCIDOS GRASOS EN PARALARVAS SALVAJES DE PULPO COMÚN (Octopus vulgaris)

    Bajo condiciones de cultivo, la composición lipídica y, específicamente, el perfil de ácidos grasos de las paralarvas cultivadas, es significativamente diferente al de las paralarvas recién eclosionadas. Por tanto, la comparación entre paralarvas salvajes y cultivadas de edad equivalente, permitiría dilucidar si estos cambios detectados en el perfil de ácidos grasos están relacionados con una dieta inadecuada o son causados por el propio desarrollo de la paralarva. En el presente estudio, se analizó por primera vez de forma individual el perfil de ácidos grasos de paralarvas salvajes de Octopus vulgaris y se determinó su edad a través de la deposición diaria de los incrementos en los picos, con el objetivo de profundizar en los requerimientos lipídicos de las paralarvas a lo largo del desarrollo y de esta forma intentar optimizar la dieta de los ejemplares en cultivo
