Linguocultural Peculiarities of German and Georgian Phraseological Units – Contrastive Analysis

    Get PDF
Knowledge about the world begins with gaining knowledge about the language. Language is a part of our national culture and plays one of the main roles in its formation. Unity of language, culture and thinking determines and forms not only national mentality, but national character as well. Specific features of the national identity are reflected in phraseological units. Phraseological unit in German, as well as in Georgian language, is a complex verbal formation. Linguistic and extralinguistic factors play an importanat role in the formation and development of phraseological units. But there are still questions – how are these phraseological units created and which language is the source language and which one is the target one. Our goal is to study the origin and structure of some German phraseological units (especially idiomatic phraseology)and to find their equivalents in Georgian. We also aim at enriching idiomatic phraseologisms with the examples of their actual use in current parlance, finding their Georgian equivalents. The present work tries to contribute to broadening the scope of investigation and methodology of the previous contrastive German-Georgian phraseology research and fill research gaps in this field

INCLUDING MEN AND BOYS IN PROGRAMMING OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS: A CASE STUDY OF THE SAFE SCHOOLS PROGRAM IN GHANA AND STEPPING STONES PROGRAM IN UGANDA

Violence against women and girls and its potential solutions increasingly garner international attention in the media and find themselves at the center of development agency portfolios. Program interventions aimed at eradicating violence against women and girls must create solutions that examine the socio-cultural values and normative expectations that boys and girls, men, and women place on one another. Many scholars argue that changing social norms or beliefs is an inter-generational process, as they are entrenched in and reproduced through social institutions such as the family, schools and religion (Enloe, 2013). Over the past decade, scholars and practitioners have noted violence against women and girls will not cease unless men and boys are part of the solution (Chant & Guttman, 2000). This qualitative case study assesses how contemporary interventions conceptualize social and cultural norms as constraints, opportunities or both, boys and men’s relative role in reproducing normative expectations, and how programs then attempt to address them. I focus on UN Women and USAID programming guidelines reports that detail the hard work that assists efforts to challenge attitudes, norms, and beliefs. I analyze key activities laid out in two specific case studies profiling programs designed to challenge violence against women and girls by incorporating the help of men and boys. These programs include The Safe Schools Program in Ghana and The Stepping Stones Program in Uganda. I examine how implementers design activities that boys and girls, men and women engage in. In so doing, I show advances in bringing men and boys into the dialogue and as such, this paper will be of interest to international development researchers, policymakers, and practitioners

Juvenile Delinquency: Its Causes and Effects

    Get PDF
The aim of the study was to find out the circumstances that led inmates of two correctional facilities for young offenders into behaviours considered criminal and the effect it has had on them and the society they lived in. The study hypothesized that; peer association and family situation will influence delinquency and that delinquency did not have a significant effect on the future (schooling) of the juveniles affected. Fifty-seven (57) inmates of two Junior Correctional Centres in Accra were conveniently selected to respond to a structured questionnaire. Juveniles attributed the causes of their delinquent behaviours to their own initiatives, family situations, spiritual influences and peer association. Peer pressure was found to influence adolescent behaviour formation. Implications of juveniles’ incarceration and parental role in guiding adolescent children are discussed. Keywords: delinquency, juvenile, causes, peer association. DOI: 10.7176/JLPG/88-24 Publication date: August 31st 201

Women in the Machinery of War: Gender, Identity & Resistance Within Contemporary Middle Eastern Conflict

    Get PDF
This thesis seeks to explore the ways in which gender and identity are imagined in times of war especially in the cases of women who participate in armed struggle within the Middle East. I focus particularly on how US and UK media\u27s framing of these women\u27s lives and experiences distort the ways in which we understand conflict within the contemporary Middle East. Through the case studies of female militants or supports of militancy in Palestine and the Islamic State I seek to highlight women\u27s stories and lived realities in an attempt to understand what drives them to use particular model\u27s of agency

Effect of Casein/Fat Ratio on Milk Fat Recovery in Cheddar Cheese

    Get PDF
Cheddar cheese was made by the traditional 4.5-h method from three experimental lots of milk, each standardized to casein/fat ratios of approximately 0.64, 0.67 and 0.70. The effect of casein/fat ratio on milk fat recovery was determined. The effects of milk composition on curd firmness at cutting, cheese composition and resulting yield of cheese were evaluated. Correlations between milk constituents and various cheese components were obtained. Milk fat recovery was unaffected by casein/fat ratios within the limits of 0.64 and 0.71. Average milk fat recovery was 91.58 ± 1.73%. Cheese yield was a function of milk protein, milk fat and cheese moisture; and a modified Van Slyke equation predicted cheese yield better than the original equation within the limits of casein/fat ratio studied. Strong negative correlations were observed between casein/fat ratio and cheese fat and cheese fat in the dry matter whereas positive correlations were observed between casein/fat ratio and cheese protein. At constant protein levels curd firmness increased directly with the amount of fat in cheese milk

A framework to enhance the design of reflective leadership development learing interventions

    Get PDF
As workplaces grow more complex and multicultural, the need for a reflective leader has been identified as a key skill in the development of leaders. Business schools provide reflective leadership development learning interventions often with little empirical work to inform curriculum development. This study aimed to describe the perceived value of reflective learning in the leadership development of business students and how these insights could inform the design of leadership development interventions. Convenience sampling was employed through the use of social media. Primary data were collected via a questionnaire and follow-up interviews. The data showed that reflective learning did add value to participants during leadership development and that life story or autobiographical reflections were the most popular intervention types. The main findings emphasise the importance of taking prior reflective experiences, readiness and learning preferences of students into account when including reflective learning in leadership development interventions. These findings guided the development of a framework to enhance the design of reflective leadership development learning interventions. Such a framework can be used by higher education educators in the quest to cultivate the skill of reflection in leaders

Corporate Social Responsibility has greatly contributed to the success of various corporate institutions in the western world. While the concept is widely recognized as being of significant strategic value to organizations, that seems not to be the case in Ghana, where the focus of most firms is on achieving profit without taking into consideration the needs of stakeholders. This study therefore seeks to address the issue by assessing the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility on organizational performance. The research was descriptive. Primary data were captured through the use of questionnaires administered to management and staff of Vodafone Ghana ltd. Target population of the study was made up of management and staff of Vodafone Ghana ltd. (20) respondents was randomly selected among management and staff through simple random sampling technique. The study revealed that the company engages in CSR programmes because it wants to create an image of a good corporate citizen. It was concluded that CSR has a substantial and positive impact on all performance indicators used in the literature review which are: finance, organizational performance overtime, reputation, employee commitment and brand differentiation.
