Beam Splitting Planar Inverted F Antenna For 5G Communication

    Get PDF
A planar inverted-F antenna with symmetrical split beams and loaded with radio frequency absorbers (here Eccosorb MCS) for 5G communication is proposed. The multi-beam antennas reduce the requirement of number of antennas and provide wide coverage. But they require a complex system such as a phased array or MIMO antennas. On the other hand, multi-beam antennas do not have such requirements. In this work, we propose a PIFA antenna which achieves multi-beam behaviour by six slabs of absorbers placed periodically between the PIFA patch and substrate to split the beams into two directions at +26°. The proposed antenna obtains a frequency band of 24.2- 25.7 GHz and achieves a high gain of approximately 10 dB at +26°. The performance of the proposed antenna is suitable for G communication. All simulations of the antenna are carried out using Ansys HFSS. The design was validated by simulations and later confirmed with measurements. &nbsp

Sensing of inspiration events from speech:comparison of deep learning and linguistic methods

Respiratory chest belt sensor can be used to measure the respiratory rate and other respiratory health parameters. Virtual Respiratory Belt, VRB, algorithms estimate the belt sensor waveform from speech audio. In this paper we compare the detection of inspiration events (IE) from respiratory belt sensor data using a novel neural VRB algorithm and the detections based on time-aligned linguistic content. The results show the superiority of the VRB method over word pause detection or grammatical content segmentation. The comparison of the methods show that both read and spontaneous speech content has a significant amount of ungrammatical breathing, that is, breathing events that are not aligned with grammatically appropriate places in language. This study gives new insights into the development of VRB methods and adds to the general understanding of speech breathing behavior. Moreover, a new VRB method, VRBOLA, for the reconstruction of the continuous breathing waveform is demonstrated

Monopole Cavity Resonator Antenna with AMC and Superstrate for 5G WiMAX Applications

For 5G and WiMAX applications, a coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed monopole antenna sandwiched between an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) and a superstrate is investigated. Because traditional planar antennas have low gains, they are unsuitable for a wide range of applications. This paper explores scientific strategies for increasing radiation gain in low-gain antennas such as planar monopoles. We use AMC in conjunction with superstrate to achieve a high gain antenna, with the monopole antenna serving as the primary radiator. However, a superstate like this demands the use of materials with high permittivity, and most of such materials are not readily available on the market. Even if such materials are available, they are mostly expensive and unsuitable for commercial systems. We investigate various superstrates and elaborate on which way these superstrates can be used interchangeably without compromising antenna performance. In the end, we fabricate one of these three superstrates. The antenna, which also employs AMC in tandem with the superstrate, has an impedance bandwidth ranging from 3.2 GHz to 3.75 GHz with 7 dBi gain, so it can be a viable candidate for 5G and WiMAX application

Wideband Slotted Planar Inverted-F Antenna using Eccosorb MCS Absorber for Millimeter-Wave Applications

This work investigates the performance enhancement of the slotted planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) using Eccosorb MCS absorber. In order to check the enhancement of the antenna performance, structure of the PIFA antenna with and without absorber has been analyzed. This antenna structure consists of two slots etched on the patch, which are placed at a height of 0.18λ0 from the substrate. We show that with the application of absorber, the radiation pattern can be transformed and produces the radiation beam in the desired direction. The proposed antenna is loaded with two layers of Eccosorb MCS absorber on the top of the substrate and with the other two layers below the substrate. Apart from providing radiation pattern in the desired direction, the antenna with absorber also provides wideband operation of 57.8 % bandwidth with high gain. The designs were first validated by simulations and then verified by measurement

A comparison of acoustic and linguistics methodologies for Alzheimer’s dementia recognition

In the light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the need for remote digital health assessment tools is greater than ever. This statement is especially pertinent for elderly and vulnerable populations. In this regard, the INTERSPEECH 2020 Alzheimer’s Dementia Recognition through Spontaneous Speech (ADReSS) Challenge offers competitors the opportunity to develop speech and language-based systems for the task of Alzheimer’s Dementia (AD) recognition. The challenge data consists of speech recordings and their transcripts, the work presented herein is an assessment of different contemporary approaches on these modalities. Specifically, we compared a hierarchical neural network with an attention mechanism trained on linguistic features with three acoustic-based systems: (i) Bag-of-Audio-Words (BoAW) quantising different low-level descriptors, (ii) a Siamese Network trained on log-Mel spectrograms, and (iii) a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) end-to-end system trained on raw waveforms. Key results indicate the strength of the linguistic approach over the acoustics systems. Our strongest test-set result was achieved using a late fusion combination of BoAW, End-to-End CNN, and hierarchical-attention networks, which outperformed the challenge baseline in both the classification and regression tasks

Phytotoxicity of silver nanoparticles on Vicia faba: evaluation of particle size effects on photosynthetic performance and leaf gas exchange

Nanotechnology is an emerging field in science and engineering, which presents significant impacts on the economy, society and the environment. The nanomaterials’ (NMs) production, use, and disposal is inevitably leading to their release into the environment where there are uncertainties about its fate, behaviour, and toxicity. Recent works have demonstrated that NMs can penetrate, translocate, and accumulate in plants. However, studies about the effects of the NMs on plants are still limited because most investigations are carried out in the initial stage of plant development. The present study aimed to evaluate and characterize the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) of broad bean (Vicia faba) leaves when subjected to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with diameters of 20, 51, and 73 nm as well as to micrometer-size Ag particles (AgBulk). The AgNPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The analyses were performed by injecting the leaves with 100 mg L-1 aqueous solution of Ag and measuring the chlorophyll fluorescence imaging, gas exchange, thermal imaging, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. In addition, silver ion (Ag+) release from Ag particles was determined by dialysis. The results revealed that AgNPs induce a decrease in the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) and an increase in the non-photochemical quenching. The data also revealed that AgNPs affected the stomatal conductance (gs) and CO2 assimilation. Further, AgNPs induced an overproduction of ROS in Vicia faba leaves. Finally, all observed effects were particle diameter-dependent, increasing with the reduction of AgNPs diameter and revealing that AgBulk caused only a small or no changes on plants. In summary, the results point out that AgNPs may negatively affect the photosynthesis process when accumulated in the leaves, and that the NPs themselves were mainly responsible since negligible Ag+ release was detected
