    RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HYPOMAGNESEMIA AND DYSLIPIDEMIA IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

    Magnesium is an important macro mineral in the mammalian cells. It is a cofactor for many enzymes involved inlipid metabolism like lipoprotein lipase, pyrophosphatase etc. In magnesium deficiency, these enzymes are defective and leads todyslipidemia in type 2 diabetic patients. Objective: To observe the association between hypomagnesemia and dyslipidemia intype 2 diabetic patients. Methodology: A case control South Indian population study consisted of control group (40 healthyindividuals) and case group (203 patients who were diagnosed as type 2 diabetes). Serum magnesium and lipid profile wasanalyzed in blood samples using standard kits in fully automated analyzer. The data was analyzed using Student’s ‘t’ test andcorrelation coefficient. Result: In the present study, a significant low serum magnesium levels (p<0.01) in case group wasobserved when compared to control group. A significant decreased cholesterol levels (p<0.05) and serum HDL levels (p<0.001)was observed in case group when compared to control group. In case group, we found a significant increased triglycerides(p<0.05) and LDL levels (p<0.001) when compared to control group. A positive correlation was observed between magnesiumand cholesterol (r = 0.195, p<0.01), magnesium and LDL (r = 0.202, p<0.01), magnesium and total cholesterol HDL ratio (r =0.142, p<0.05) in the case group.     The crystal structure of ferroelastic Rb4Li(HSO4)3(SO4) has been determined at two temperatures, which indicates a structural phase transition, tetragonal P43 with a = 7.629(1) &#197;,c = 29.497(2) &#197; at 293 K and monoclinic P21 witha = 7.583(3) &#197;,b = 29.230(19) &#197;,c = 7.536(5) &#197;,&#946; = 90.14(1)&#176; at 90 K. The crystal structure of K4Li(HSO4)3(SO4)4 has also been determined at two temperatures, tetragonalP41 witha = 7.405(1) &#197;,c = 28.712(6) &#197; at 293 K and tetragonalP41 with a = 7.371(5) &#197;,c = 28.522(5) &#197; at 100 K. The overall coordination features in both the structures have been analysed in terms of bond valence sum calculations

    Classification of Mild Cognitive Impairment with Deep Transfer Learning Approach using CWT based Scalogram Images

    Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a condition that can occur as a person gets older, and faces problems like recognition, memory, and language skills. Early detection of MCI is crucial, as it can progress to more severe conditions like Alzheimer's disease. This study proposes a method to use Scalogram images, obtained by applying Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) to EEG signals and pre-trained models like ResNet50, VGG16, InceptionV3, Inception_ResNetV2 through transfer learning to classify MCI and Healthy Control (HC). Fine-tuning of the models is also used to improve the results, and various performance metrics are employed for classification. The study concludes that Inception_ResNetV2 transfer learning yielded good results, while ResNet50 and InceptionV3 transfer learning with fine-tuning resulted in higher accuracy using a low learning rate

    Artificial Neural Network based Cancer Cell Classification

    This paper addresses the system which achieves auto-segmentation and cell characterization for prediction of percentage of carcinoma (cancerous) cells in the given image with high accuracy. The system has been designed and developed for analysis of medical pathological images based on hybridization of syntactic and statistical approaches, using Artificial Neural Network as a classifier tool (ANN) [2]. This system performs segmentation and classification as is done in human vision system [1] [9] [10] [12], which recognize objects; perceives depth; identifies different textures, curved surfaces, or a surface inclination by texture information and brightness. In this paper, an attempt has been made to present an approach for soft tissue characterization utilizing texture-primitive features and segmentation with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classifier tool. The present approach directly combines second, third, and fourth steps into one algorithm. This is a semi-supervised approach in which supervision is involved only at the level of defining structure of Artificial Neural Network; afterwards, algorithm itself scans the whole image and performs the segmentation and classification in unsupervised mode. Finally, algorithm was applied to selected pathological images for segmentation and classification. Results were in agreement with those with manual segmentation and were clinically correlated [18] [21].     Bioactivities of extracts from the marine sponge Halichondria panicea

    In the present study, we screened the biological activity of extracts from the marine sponge Halichondria panicea collected in the Arabian Sea. Crude toxin was obtained by methanol, chloroform-methanol (2:1) and aqueous extraction. Subsequently, the protein concentration of each crude extract was determined. The impact of both sponge methanolic and aqueous extracts was found to increase activities of Na+-K+ ATP-ase and Mg++ ATP-ase. In the case of chloroform-methanol extract, higher concentrations increased acetylcholine esterase (AchE) activity. The methanolic and chloroform-methanol extracts exhibited hemolytic activity on chicken and human erythrocytes, whereas the aqueous extract failed to do so. Methanol and aqueous extracts produced an immunostimulating effect and all extracts revealed angiogenic activity. The aqueous extract yielded nine bands by SDS-PAGE on 12% gel

    Magnetoresistance in ordered and disordered double perovskite oxide, Sr2_2FeMoO6_6

    We have prepared crystallographically ordered and disorder specimens of the double perovskite, Sr2_2FeMoO6_6 and investigated their magnetoresistance behaviour. The extent of ordering between the Fe and Mo sites in the two samples is determined by Rietveld analysis of powder x-ray diffraction patterns and reconfirmed by M\"{o}ssbauer studies. While the ordered sample exhibits the sharp low-field response, followed by moderate changes in the magnetoresistance at higher fields, the disordered sample is characterised by the absence of the spectacular low-field response. We argue that the low field response depends crucially on the half-metallic ferromagnetism, while the high-field response follows from the overall magnetic nature of the sample, even in absence of the half-metallic state.Comment: accepted in Solid State Communicatio

    Antifouling activity of alkaline protease from halotolerant Bacillus sp. isolated from marine source

    1274-1279In this study, an attempt has been made to explore the antifouling activity of the marine halotolerant bacterium, namely, Bacillus sp. About 10 different bacteria were isolated using the Zobell marine agar medium from the marine sediment samples that were collected from the Marina beach, Bay of Bengal, India. The growth pattern tests of the 10 bacteria were documented. Among the 10 different isolates, two exhibited the protease activity in skim milk agar. The antifouling activity was further tested against five different fouling bacteria. The antifouling activity of alkaline protease isolated from Bacillus sp. inferred that it exhibited pronounced inhibitory zones against fouling bacterial strains with least minimal inhibitory concentration range between 25 and 100 units/mg protein. Anticrustacean assay was performed using Artemia salina of alkaline protease, which showed good activity. The results suggest that Bacillus sp. produced an extracellular alkaline protease, which was responsible for the antifouling and algicidal activity of marine fouling organisms. This study tends to indicate that Bacillus sp. could be further explored for the development of new antifouling agents
