    Ferromagnetism and the Effect of Free Charge Carriers on Electric Polarization in Y_2NiMnO_6 Double Perovskite

    The double perovskite Y_2NiMnO_6 displays ferromagnetic transition at Tc = 81 K. The ferromagnetic order at low temperature is confirmed by the saturation value of magnetization (M_s) and also, validated by the refined ordered magnetic moment values extracted from neutron powder diffraction data at 10 K. This way, the dominant Mn4+ and Ni2+ cationic ordering is confirmed. The cation-ordered P 21/n nuclear structure is revealed by neutron powder diffraction studies at 300 and 10 K. Analysis of frequency dependent dielectric constant and equivalent circuit analysis of impedance data takes into account the bulk contribution to total dielectric constant. This reveals an anomaly which coincides with the ferromagnetic transition temperature (T_c). Pyrocurrent measurements register a current flow with onset near Tc and a peak at 57 K that shifts with temperature ramp rate. The extrinsic nature of the observed pyrocurrent is established by employing a special protocol measurement. It is realized that the origin is due to re-orientation of electric dipoles created by the free charge carriers and not by spontaneous electric polarization at variance with recently reported magnetism-driven ferroelectricity in this materialComment: Published in Physical Review

    Polymer electrolytes represent the ultimate in terms of desirable properties of energy storage/conversion devices, as they can offer an all-solid-state construction, a wide variety of shapes and sizes, light-weight, low costs, high energy density and safety. Here we present our recent results concerning a novel strategy for preparing efficient polymer membranes which are successfully demonstrated as suitable electrolytes for several energy conversion and storage devices (i.e., Li- and Na-based batteries and DSSCs). Highly ionic conducting polymer electrolytes containing PEO-based functionalities and different components (e.g., Li/Na salts, RTILs, natural biosourced and cellulosic fillers) are successfully prepared via a rapid process and, directly or subsequently, cross-linked via UV irradiation (patent pending, PCT/IT2014/000008). All the prepared materials are thoroughly characterised in terms of their physical, chemical and morphological properties and tested for their electrochemical performances and durability. The UV-curing process on such materials led to the production of elastic and resistant amorphous macromolecular networks. Noticeably increased ionic conductivities are registered (10-3 S cm-1 at RT), along with very stable interfacial and storage stability and wide electrochemical stability windows. The different lab-scale solid-state devices show remarkable performances even at ambient temperature, at the level of those using liquid electrolytes, respect to which demonstrate much greater durability and safety. The obtained findings demonstrate a new, easy and low cost approach to fabricate and tailor-make polymer electrolytes with highly promising prospects for the next generation of advanced flexible energy production and storage devices

    In Kerala, nearly 75-80% of the population consume fish and their annual per capita consumption rate is about 13 kg. The rate of fish consumption is likely to go up due to increased awareness about fish as a source of cheap and highly nutritious but harmless food item. Hence there is every need to augment fish production not only to meet our food requirements but also to increase foreign exchange earnings. The current level of fish production is inadequate to fulfil all these needs. An analysis of the trend of fish production during the past few years indicates that there may not be any significant improvement in it in the coming years. In this context, measures to increase fish production are to be thought of Aquaculture is the only way to achieve this. In Kerala at present aquaculture is restricted to backwaters and inland waterbodies. In order to enhance fish production, farming of fish and other species of aquatic organisms is to be extended to inshore coastal waters for which suitable farming methods are to be adopted

    The resources of the Indian mackerel - characteristics, exploitation and future prospects

    The Indian mackerel contributed to an annual average (1993-'99) catch of 2.17 lakh tonnes (t). The west coast landed about 80% of its total catch and remaining by the east coast. The resource is rich in upwelling areas of the west coast with a catch contribution of 38.68% from Kerala followed by Kamataka and Maharashtra. The fishery is characterized by annual fluctuations in the catch ranging from 0.14 lakh t in 1968 to 2.9 lakh t in 1989. The annual fluctuations do not show any pattern; whereas the decade! trends show a cyclic pattern of ups and downs. The fluctuations are more pronounced along the upwelling areas of the west coast. In 1990s, there was a quantum leap in the annual catch chiefly due to the introduction of large seine nets and motorization of country crafts. The increase was maximum in Kerala, moderate in Maharashtra and poor in Kamataka. Along the east coast also fishery showed considerable improvement. Of late, the role of trawl net in the mackerel fishery is gaining importance. The surface fishery using large seines along the upwelling areas seems to depend very much on the intensity and duration of upwelling which is perhaps causing the fluctuations in catch rather than the variations in the abundance of the resource. The behaviour of the fish to ascend with upwelling and spreading to deeper waters with sitiking of thermocline seem to control exploitation and protect the resilience of the stocks. Perhaps the richness of the resource is much stronger than hitherto believed. With proper management the production can reach further heights

    Ultrastructure of the epithelial cells and oleo-gumresin secretion in Boswellia serrata (Burseraceae)

    The ultrastructure of epithelial cells of oleo-gumresin ducts in Boswellia serrata, the source of Indian olibanum, is described. Oleo-gumresin ducts are present in primary and secondary phloem. The duct lumen forms an enlarged apoplastic space surrounded by epithelial cells. The epithelial cells are rich in dictyosomes, lipid bodies, mitochondria with dilated cristae, multivesicular bodies, osmiophilic materials, plastids and vesicIes. Plastids have poorly developed internal membranes. Dictyosomes and plastids are possible sites of resin synthesis. The gum component of the exudate is formed in dictyosomes and from the outer layers of the inner tangential wall (wall facing the duct lumen). This wall is replenished from inside by the activity of dictyosomes. The secretory materials are transported to the apoplast by granulocrine and eccrine secretion. They migrate through the loose microfibrils of the inner tangential wall into the duct lumen. Rarely, epithelial cells of young ducts have rudimentary plasmodesmata on the inner tangential wall which may be channels for passage of secretory materials into the duct lumen

    Arthropods have been recorded from various types of insect infested dried fish products stored in the laboratory. They have been identified as Suidesia nesbetti Hughes (Acaridae) infesting dried anchovies and dried mussel, Dermestes ater Dermestidae coleoptera) attacking wet cured sardines and smoked catfish and Stegobium panicium infesting smoked catfish and dried mussel. Incidences of Stegobium panicium in dry fish products and Suidesia nesbetti in dried mussel has been recorded for the first time
