Reception State Estimation of GNSS satellites in urban environment using particle filtering
International audienceThe reception state of a satellite is an unavailable information for Global Navigation Satellite System receivers. His knowledge or estimation can be used to evaluate the pseudorange. This article deals with the problem using three reception states: direct reception, alternate reception and blocked situation. This parameter, estimated using a Dirichlet distribution, is included in a particle filtering algorithm to improve the GNSS position in urban area. The algorithm takes into account two observation noise models depending on the reception of each satellite. Gaussian probability distribution is used with a direct path whereas a Gaussian mixture model is used in the alternate case
MRSA screening by the Xpert MRSA PCR assay: pooling samples of the nose, throat, and groin increases the sensitivity of detection without increasing the laboratory costs.
The performance of the Xpert MRSA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay on pooled nose, groin, and throat swabs (three nylon flocked eSwabs into one tube) was compared to culture by analyzing 5,546 samples. The sensitivity [0.78, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.73-0.82] and specificity (0.99, 95 % CI 0.98-0.99) were similar to the results from published studies on separated nose or other specimens. Thus, the performance of the Xpert MRSA assay was not affected by pooling the three specimens into one assay, allowing a higher detection rate without increasing laboratory costs, as compared to nose samples alone
Pan African Medical Journal 2016; 2
A System for recommending rental properties
This paper presents an implementation of recommended technology to online search of rental properties. In particular, the paper uses the preference-based search approach combined with a technique called example-critiquing. Rather than perform a query against the database, this approach prompts the user to express some preferences on rental properties, uses them to construct a preference model for the user, and finally generates a list of properties that best match that preferences. The system is developed as Web application using the Ruby on Rails framewor

A Recommender system for rental properties
Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Computer-Based Information Systems (MSIS) at Strathmore UniversityLocating products or services online that meet users’ needs is increasingly difficult due to the large pool of choices to consider before arriving at the desired one. A user may spend a considerable amount of time exploring numerous online resources to locate items that fit his requirements. Furthermore, users may not always express their preferences in a manner that easily matches them to items that could meet them. Searching for items online has been done mainly through database queries that return a list of the most suitable items. Recommender systems technology can be applied to ease the task of locating desired items online. This study proposes a recommender system that enables users to carry out a preference-based search on rental properties and enables them to refine those preferences using example-critiquing in case they are not satisfied with initial search results. This recommendation approach has been shown to provide more accurate search results. This research adopted the Object-Oriented Systems Analysis and Design (OOAD) approach to the development of the system. The system was developed as a Web application using the Ruby on Rails framework. Furthermore, the system was tested
to ascertain that it performed as designed
Prophylaxis Failure Is Associated with a Specific Pneumocystis carinii Genotype
To investigate the possible association between Pneumocystis carinii types and various clinical and demographic parameters, we used molecular typing to analyze 93 bronchoalveolar lavage specimens from patients with P. carinii pneumonia (PCP). Multivariate regression analysis revealed an association between being infected with a specific P. carinii genotype and receiving anti-PCP prophylaxis (odds ratio, 4.4; 95% confidence interval, 1.0-18.6; P = .05), although no association with a specific drug was detecte
