Mental health literacy in an educational elite – an online survey among university students
BACKGROUND: Mental health literacy is a prerequisite for early recognition and intervention in mental disorders. The aims of this paper are to determine whether a sample of university students recognise different symptoms of depression and schizophrenia and to reveal factors influencing correct recognition. METHODS: Bivariate and correspondence analyses of the results from an online survey among university students (n = 225). RESULTS: Most participants recognised the specific symptoms of depression. The symptoms of schizophrenia were acknowledged to a lower extent. Delusions of control and hallucinations of taste were not identified as symptoms of schizophrenia. Repeated revival of a trauma for depression and split personality for schizophrenia were frequently mistaken as symptoms of the respective disorders. Bivariate analyses demonstrated that previous interest in and a side job related to mental disorders, as well as previous personal treatment experience had a positive influence on symptom recognition. The correspondence analysis showed that male students of natural science, economics and philosophy are illiterate in recognising the symptoms depression and schizophrenia. CONCLUSION: Among the educational elite, a wide variability in mental health literacy was found. Therefore, it's important for public mental health interventions to focus on the different recognition rates in depression and schizophrenia. Possibilities for contact must be arranged according to interest and activity (e.g., at work). In order to improve mental health literacy, finally, education and/or internship should be integrated in high school or apprenticeship curricula. Special emphasis must be given towards the effects of gender and stereotypes held about mental illnesses
Pelletizing of fuel blends mixed with lignin for energetic use in small scale combustion units
As part of future bio-economy concepts technical lignin, by-products derived from the pulp- and paper industry, may be recycled for further utilization. Via a specially developed process the liquid lignin lye can be converted into a solid state. The lignin granules were mixed with a blend of canola straw and peeled oat bran in different proportions (1–2 wt.-%) to adjust the characteristics of the mixtures for pelletizing. Combustion tests with the produced pellets were carried out in a small scale combustion unit (25 kW) showing that depending on the amount and kind of lignin CO-, SO2- and particulate matter emissions are affected. Through further optimization of fuel mixtures and by means of secondary measures existing emission limits could be complied
Genetic variants of homocysteine metabolism and multiple sclerosis: a case-control study
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is necessary for the synthesis of methionine and S-adenosylmethionine, which is necessary for CNS (re-)myelination. The MTHFR variant c.1298A>C was associated with the development of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) in a German population. This study aimed at analyzing whether further genetic variants of methionine metabolism are associated with the development or the clinical course of RRMS. Therefore, genomic DNA of 147 serial German RRMS patients and 147 matched healthy controls was genotyped for five polymorphic variants of methionine metabolism. Statistical analyses were performed using multivariate binary and linear regression analyses. We show that the insertion allele of cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) c.844_855ins68bp and the G-allele of reduced folate carrier 1 (RFC1) c.80G>A were associated with an earlier age of onset of MS, suggesting gene-dose effects (median age of onset in years: 25-26-32; standardized regression coefficient beta: 0.216; p=0.030, and 29-31-35 years; beta: 0.282; p=0.005, respectively). Conclusively, mutant variants of CBS and RFC1 may be associated with the age of RRMS onset. Since methionine metabolism can be manipulated by supplementation of vitamins and amino acids, our data provide a rationale for novel ideas of preventive and therapeutic strategies in RRMS
CO, NO<i>x</i>, PCDD/F, and Total Particulate Matter Emissions from Two Small Scale Combustion Appliances Using Agricultural Biomass Type Test Fuels
In
Germany, solid biomass fuels based on agricultural byproducts
are only used in marginal amounts for small scale combustion. This
is the consequence of several regulatory constraints, in particular
requirements defined in the first ordinance of the German emission
control act (1. BImSchV) including the mandatory utilization of dedicated
licensed boilers for such fuels. For the licensing, test fuels with
defined fuel composition representing straw and cereal grain like
fuels are demanded, and strict emission thresholds have to be met
both during type testing and during periodic chimney sweep measurements.
To facilitate the market introduction of the first licensed boiler,
agricultural biomass test fuels with characteristics being representative
for the composition of these assortments were produced and utilized
for combustion tests. Emission measurements (i.e., for CO, NO<i>x</i>, PCDD/F, and total particulate matter) were
performed by an accredited institute according to the relevant methods.
It was demonstrated that test fuels with dedicated fuel composition
can be produced on the bench scale. The results prove that compliance
with the strict emission thresholds of 1. BImSchV in Germany can be
realized even with challenging fuels if an appropriate boiler is combined
with an efficient dust separator. Accordingly, PCDD/F emission levels
and toxicity almost as low as for wood combustion were observed

Size and surface effects on the MRI relaxivity of manganese ferrite nanoparticle contrast agents
Superparamagnetic MnFe2O4 nanocrystals of different sizes were synthesized in high-boiling ether solvent and transferred into water using three different approaches. First, we applied a ligand exchange in order to form a water soluble polymer shell. Second, the particles were embedded into an amphiphilic polymer shell. Third, the nanoparticles were embedded into large micelles formed by lipids. Although all approaches lead to effective negative contrast enhancement, we observed significant differences concerning the magnitude of this effect. The transverse relaxivity, in particular r(2)*, is greatly higher for the micellar system compared to the polymer-coated particles using same-sized nanoparticles. We also observed an increase in transverse relaxivities with increasing particle size for the polymer-coated nanocrystals. The results are qualitatively compared with theoretical models describing the dependence of relaxivity on the size of magnetic spheres
