    Dance training shapes action perception and its neural implementation within the young and older adult brain

    How we perceive others in action is shaped by our prior experience. Many factors influence brain responses when observing others in action, including training in a particular physical skill, such as sport or dance, and also general development and aging processes. Here, we investigate how learning a complex motor skill shapes neural and behavioural responses among a dance-naïve sample of 20 young and 19 older adults. Across four days, participants physically rehearsed one set of dance sequences, observed a second set, and a third set remained untrained. Functional MRI was obtained prior to and immediately following training. Participants’ behavioural performance on motor and visual tasks improved across the training period, with younger adults showing steeper performance gains than older adults. At the brain level, both age groups demonstrated decreased sensorimotor cortical engagement after physical training, with younger adults showing more pronounced decreases in inferior parietal activity compared to older adults. Neural decoding results demonstrate that among both age groups, visual and motor regions contain experience-specific representations of new motor learning. By combining behavioural measures of performance with univariate and multivariate measures of brain activity, we can start to build a more complete picture of age-related changes in experience-dependent plasticity

    Impaired ATP synthase assembly associated with a mutation in the human ATP synthase subunit 6 gene

    Mutations in human mitochondrial DNA are a well recognized cause of disease. A mutation at nucleotide position 8993 of human mitochondrial DNA, located within the gene for ATP synthase subunit 6, is associated with the neurological muscle weakness, ataxia, and retinitis pigmentosa (NARP) syndrome. To enable analysis of this mutation in control nuclear backgrounds, two different cell lines were transformed with mitochondria carrying NARP mutant mitochondrial DNA. Transformant cell lines had decreased ATP synthesis capacity, and many also had abnormally high levels of two ATP synthase sub-complexes, one of which was F1-ATPase. A combination of metabolic labeling and immunoblotting experiments indicated that assembly of ATP synthase was slowed and that the assembled holoenzyme was unstable in cells carrying NARP mutant mitochondrial DNA compared with control cells. These findings indicate that altered assembly and stability of ATP synthase are underlying molecular defects associated with the NARP mutation in subunit 6 of ATP synthase, yet intrinsic enzyme activity is also compromised

    We analyse restrictions on the stochastic superspace parameter space arising from 1 fb1^{-1} of LHC data, and bounds on sparticle masses, cold dark matter relic density and the branching ratio of the process Bsμ+μB_s \rightarrow \mu^+ \mu^-. A region of parameter space consistent with these limits is found where the stochasticity parameter, \xi, takes values in the range -2200 GeV < \xi < -900 GeV, provided the cutoff scale is O(1018)\mathcal{O}(10^{18}) GeV.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figure

    Negotiating differences in academic preparedness among transnational students in higher education

    “Students these days don’t know anything,” commented a faculty member in a focus group. But is it that students don’t know anything, or that faculty members are unfamiliar with what students do know? This is no small issue, as the acceleration of internationalization in higher education and the broader processes of globalization have led to increased numbers of students with general education profiles that differ from those of the instructors and their domestic students. These transnational students—not only international students (paying international tuition), but also permanent residents and citizens —received their primary and secondary (and, possibly, undergraduate) educations outside of Canada, and instructors often lack an awareness of their educational backgrounds and experiences. Emerging from a study of the everyday instructional needs of full-time college and university faculty, this paper presents the results of a systematic review of the literature on the general education of students from four regions that are sources of international students and immigrants, and, therefore, prepared students on campus: China, India, the Middle East, and Latin America. The research not only identifies the curriculum that these students followed, but also the impact of educational reforms on the teaching styles and learning skills emphasized in these systems, and describes the implications for Canadian instructors

    Social Networks in the Context of Microfinance and Intimate Partner Violence in Bangladesh: A Mixed-Methods Study

    This mixed-methods study draws from social network theory to examine disclosure and help seeking for intimate partner violence among microfinance participants in Bangladesh. This study uses data on women from the nationally representative Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2007 and from in-depth interviews with 30 microfinance participants in Dhaka. Propensity Score Matching analyses indicated that increase in social contacts due to microfinance participation was not associated with disclosing IPV. Responses from the urban sample indicated that reasons for nondisclosure include feelings of shame, stigma, and fear of being perceived as weak by others. Implications regarding how microfinance organizations can tap participant networks as mechanisms for change are discussed

    Hydrodynamic Limit for an Hamiltonian System with Boundary Conditions and Conservative Noise

    We study the hyperbolic scaling limit for a chain of N coupled anharmonic oscillators. The chain is attached to a point on the left and there is a force (tension) τ\tau acting on the right. In order to provide good ergodic properties to the system, we perturb the Hamiltonian dynamics with random local exchanges of velocities between the particles, so that momentum and energy are locally conserved. We prove that in the macroscopic limit the distributions of the elongation, momentum and energy, converge to the solution of the Euler system of equations, in the smooth regime.Comment: New deeply revised version. 1 figure adde
