    Learning Boolean Halfspaces with Small Weights from Membership Queries

    We consider the problem of proper learning a Boolean Halfspace with integer weights {0,1,,t}\{0,1,\ldots,t\} from membership queries only. The best known algorithm for this problem is an adaptive algorithm that asks nO(t5)n^{O(t^5)} membership queries where the best lower bound for the number of membership queries is ntn^t [Learning Threshold Functions with Small Weights Using Membership Queries. COLT 1999] In this paper we close this gap and give an adaptive proper learning algorithm with two rounds that asks nO(t)n^{O(t)} membership queries. We also give a non-adaptive proper learning algorithm that asks nO(t3)n^{O(t^3)} membership queries

    The Internet Use and Community Involvement in Tehran Iran

    This is exploring the impact of the internet on local community involvement in Tehran, Iran. It investigates how the internet changes community involvement and argues that the Internet has created new forms of community involvement instead of local community involvement. This study has employed quantitative research methods. The sample for this research was drawn from the population of Internet users, namely people who accessed and used the Internet in Tehran, Iran. The results of the study indicate that there was no significant correlation between the amount of Internet use and local community involvement. People who spend more time online (high Internet user) do not have a greater local community involvement than people who use Internet less of the time. By contrast in terms of type of Internet use and social capital the study found that people who used the Internet for local news and reading newspapers online were more involved in the local community. The study illustrated that the Internet encourages people to some extent to become involved in the national or global community.nbs

    Inflammation, anxiety, and stress in bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder: A narrative review.

    Bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are serious and prevalent psychiatric diseases that share common phenomenological characteristics: symptoms (such as anxiety, affective lability or emotion dysregulation), neuroimaging features, risk factors and comorbidities. While several studies have focused on the link between stress and peripheral inflammation in other affective disorders such as anxiety or depression, fewer have explored this relationship in BD and BPD. This review reports on evidence showing an interplay between immune dysregulation, anxiety and stress, and how an altered acute neuroendocrine stress response may exist in these disorders. Moreover, we highlight limitations and confounding factors of these existing studies and discuss multidirectional hypotheses that either suggest inflammation or stress and anxiety as the primum movens in BD and BPD pathophysiology, or inflammation as a consequence of the pathophysiology of these diseases. Untangling these associations and implementing a transdiagnostic approach will have diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic implications for BD and BPD patients

    Sevoflurane-mediated modulation of oxidative myocardial injury

    Introduction: Volatile anesthetics offer protection when administered throughout an ischemic injury. We examined how volatile anesthetics modulate the cardiac myocytic injury associated with hydrogen peroxide. Methods: Forty-eight Long-Evans rats were divided into four groups depending on the treatment: none (CONT), Glibenclamide (GLB); Sevoflurane (SEV); or GLB+SEV. Each group was further divided into two, one of which was exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ). Oral GLB was administered 48 hours before myocardial isolation. All rats were anesthetized by intraperitoneal injection of Ketamine, and the hearts were harvested after heparinization. Cardiomyocytes were isolated using a combination of mechanical mincing and enzymatic digestion. After isolation, the aliquots of cells were exposed to H2 O2 and FeSO4 for 30 minutes. The cell suspensions were then bubbled for 10 minutes with 100% oxygen and 1.5% SEV if appropriate. Apoptosis was detected by fluorescein-bound annexin-V (ANX-V), necrosis by propidium iodide, and ELISA assessed caspase-3 activity in all groups. Results: There was an increase in apoptosis, necrosis, and caspase-3 activity in the cells following exposure to hydrogen peroxide. SEV reduced the rate of cell necrosis and apoptosis. Pretreatment with GLB did not alter the effects of SEV. Similarly, caspase-3 activity did not change with GLB, although SEV administration reduced this enzymatic activity in response to hydrogen peroxide. Conclusion: In this oxidant injury model, we demonstrated that incubating isolated cardiomyocytes with SEV profoundly diminished H2 O2 -induced apoptotic and necrotic cells compared to their CONTs. These results support the hypothesis that KATP channels are not the sole mediators associated with anesthetic preconditioning

    Prospects for finding the mechanisms of sex differences in addiction with human and model organism genetic analysis.

    Despite substantial evidence for sex differences in addiction epidemiology, addiction-relevant behaviors and associated neurobiological phenomena, the mechanisms and implications of these differences remain unknown. Genetic analysis in model organism is a potentially powerful and effective means of discovering the mechanisms that underlie sex differences in addiction. Human genetic studies are beginning to show precise risk variants that influence the mechanisms of addiction but typically lack sufficient power or neurobiological mechanistic access, particularly for the discovery of the mechanisms that underlie sex differences. Our thesis in this review is that genetic variation in model organisms are a promising approach that can complement these investigations to show the biological mechanisms that underlie sex differences in addiction

    Approximate affine linear relationship between L1 norm objective functional values and L2 norm constraint bounds

    For an optimization problem with an norm objective function subject to an norm inequality constraint, this paper shows that there is an approximately linear relationship between the norm objective functional values and the norm specifications. This relationship is verified through the use of random and real world industrial data. The obtained results can be employed for 1) estimating the norm output objective functional value without solving the optimization problem numerically; 2) providing an insight for defining the norm specification in which a simple method is proposed in this paper; and 3) testing whether the obtained solutions are the globally optimal solutions or not. These advantages are demonstrated via the use of random data
