COVID-19 has brought about a number of changes in people’s lifestyles and business pivots, specifically in the Visual Communication Design (VCD) subsector of the creative industry. This study aimed to determine those changes. The first step is to identify the new business pivot; next, look for future business opportunities so that the businesses can sustain and grow. The study uses a phenomenological method that specializes in visible phenomena and realities to examine their explanations. The method explores data to find the meaning of the primary and essential things of the phenomenon, reality or events experienced by the object of the research. The results of this study indicated four new lifestyles in the new normal era: (1) Staying at home; (2) Staying at the bottom of the pyramid; (3) Going virtual; and (4) Being an emphatic society. As such, the new lifestyle influences the changes in the VCD-business pivot. Designers can change the business pivot to survive during the pandemic, including designing masks, personal protective equipment/hazmat suit, making posters and comic strips including quotes motivating people to face the pandemic, etc. Keywords: business pivot, visual communication, COVID-19 pandemi

Efforts to minimize long-term psychological morbidity following natural disaster have resulted in calls for the psychological interventions for survivors. These calls are based on the assumption that the earlier intervention occurs, the less opportunity for maladaptive and disruptive cognitive and behavioral patterns. In response to these calls, many disaster’s first responders have used Psychological Debriefing (PD) intervention following this traumatic event. Even though PD is frequently discussed in Western studies, yet, it is not deliberately explain in Malaysian disaster literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to discuss the importance of Psychological Debriefing Intervention and it implications on post disaster management in Malaysia. Different types of PD models are presented and several components that influence the process of psychological debriefing are discussed with emphasis on Malaysian cultural perspective. It is suggested that the continued exploration and discussion is critical in developing Psychological Debriefing Model that suitable for Malaysian culture

This study aimed to determine how companies successfully created visual brands during the COVID-19 pandemic that are easy to remember, contextually-relevant, and educated the public about the current pandemic. The phenomenology research method was used, which is a method to deeply observe actual and factual phenomena occurring at a specific time. This method runs with several steps to find out the essence of the phenomenon that occurs. The results of this study explain consumer behaviour, visual strategies that can be taken by companies in dealing with pandemic situations, and how companies and brands communicate in the new-normal era. It will be a valuable input, especially for visual communication design science, because the collected data can be used to determine strategies and visual communication techniques during a pandemic. Data related to the stage of consumer shifting during a pandemic can also be used to determine the direction of branding and brand communication with the community. Therefore, the prison must constantly make improvements to the Parole System from time to time in order to remain relevant to the changing times to be more comprehensive and efficient

DEPRESSION AND FACTORS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AMONG MALAY, CHINESE AND INDIAN ELDERLY WOMEN AT RUMAH SERI KENANGAN (RSK), PUBLIC WELFARE INSTITUTIONS IN MALAYSIA

For more than four decades, researchers have found depression to be a common mental illness among the elderly (Charatan, 1975; Sreevani & Reddemma, 2012). In Malaysia, the rates of depression among elderly residents of institutions are 67% higher than among elderly adults residing at home (Al-Jawad, Rashid, & Narayan, 2007). As in the United States, elderly Malaysian women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with depressive symptoms as elderly men (Salimah et al., 2008). Time and again, research has revealed that depression is a significant problem for individuals later in life and may affect their psychological well-being. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship among depression and factors of psychological well-being among Malay, Chinese, and Indian elderly women living in four Rumah Seri Kenangans (RSKs), or public welfare institutions in Malaysia. Face-to-face interviews were conducted from August to October 2013 to measure participants\u27 baseline depression, perceived social support, spiritual intelligence, self-esteem, and level of social desirability. A diverse group of 163 elderly women participated in this study, including 84 ethnic Malays (51.5%), 43 ethnic Chinese (26.4%), and 36 ethnic Indians (22.1%) with an average age of 70 (SD = 7.10). The results indicated that there were significant differences between the three ethnic groups in terms of their depression, spiritual intelligence, and perceived social support. Chinese elderly women were found to have higher baseline rates of depression, lower spiritual intelligence, and lower perceived social support than Malay as well as Indian elderly women. The results indicated that 37% of the combination of spiritual intelligence, perceived social support, self-esteem, and social desirability significantly predicted depression among elderly female participants (F(4,127)=22.77, p \u3c .001). However, only perceived social support and self-esteem were found to be significant predictors of depression among the elderly women of the selected RSKs. These results led to some important implications for practitioners working with the elderly population in institutions, as well as for counselor educators. Limitations and recommendations for future research are also provided

Malaysians are frequently exposed to information about the problem of domestic violence, which affects children, women, the elderly, and maids. In order to address this issue, it is critical to increase the knowledge, awareness, and involvement of community members of all ages. To that end, a study was conducted to determine students' level of awareness and knowledge about important aspects of domestic violence, such as the provision of policies, rights, and available assistance channelled through various organisations to victims of violence. This quantitative study collected data by distributing a set of questionnaires. The study surveyed 132 Social Work students in their first through fourth years at one of Malaysia's public universities. The students were chosen because they are most likely to work in social service organisations after graduation. Descriptive statistics was used to determine social work students’ level of awareness and knowledge about domestic violence. The findings indicated that respondents had a moderate level of awareness regarding domestic violence. Meanwhile, their awareness of the Domestic Violence Act's provisions, rights, and available assistance services for victims of domestic violence was limited. The findings of this study demonstrate a lack of awareness and understanding among Social Work students regarding domestic violence. There were a few respondents who retained gender-stereotypical beliefs toward domestic violence victims and perpetrators. Thus, it is proposed that extended awareness and practical training programmes concerning domestic violence be provided through a comprehensive educational syllabus to assist students in increasing their level of awareness and understanding about domestic violence. This is hoped to increase students' readiness and ability to deal with domestic violence cases in their professional endeavours

University Students’ Civic Engagement: The Influencing Factors

    No full text
This study investigates the state of civic engagement amongst university students and factors influencing their participation. The study employs a quantitative method using a questionnaire distributed online as the primary method of data collection and analyses. A total of 549 Universiti Utara Malaysia undergraduate students from various academic programmes had participated as respondents to the online survey. The findings of this study suggest that the level of civic engagement amongst the university students are considerably high. Based on scoring obtained through the use of the standardised measures developed for this study, their level of participation of civic activities ranges from medium to high. Pertaining to the factors responsible for their level of participation in the civic milieu, the study concludes that national- or societal-level sentiments and influences constitute the major driving force as compared to the more individualistic motives. In this regard, it is reasonable to assume that, for this part of the population, civic engagement stays at a healthy level, with the primary caveat being that the source of inspiration for their civic health resides in macrosocial processes rather than the individual's psyche
