    Initial operational capability of the ASTREX large space structures test bed

    Future DOD, NASA, and SDI space systems will be larger than any spacecraft flown before. The economics of placing these large space systems (LSS) into orbit dictates that they be as low in mass as possible. The combination of very large size and relatively low mass produces systems which possess little structural rigidity. This flexibility causes severe technical problems when combined with the precise shape and pointing requirements associated with many future LSS missions. Development of new control technologies which can solve these problems and enable future LSS missions is under way, but a test bed is needed for demonstration and evaluation of the emerging control hardware (sensors and actuators) and methodologies. In particular, the need exists for a facility which enables both large angle slewing and subsequent pointing/shape control of a variety of flexible bodies. The Air Force Astronautics Laboratory (AFAL) has conceived the Advanced Space Structures Technology Research Experiments (ASTREX) facility to fill this need.     The Stability of Polar Oxide Surfaces

    The structures of the polar surfaces of ZnO are studied using ab initio calculations and surface x-ray diffraction. The experimental and theoretical relaxations are in good agreement. The polar surfaces are shown to be very stable; the cleavage energy for the (0001)-Zn and (0001Ì… )-O surfaces is 4.0J/m2 comparable to 2.32J/m2 for the most stable nonpolar (1010) surface. The surfaces are stabilized by an electronic mechanism involving the transfer of 0.17 electrons between them. This leads to 2D metallic surface states, which has implications for the use of the material in gas sensing and catalytic applications

    Are the hosts of VLBI selected radio-AGN different to those of radio-loud AGN?

    Recent studies have found that radio-AGN selected by radio-loudness show little difference in terms of their host galaxy properties when compared to non-AGN galaxies of similar stellar mass and redshift. Using new 1.4~GHz VLBI observations of the COSMOS field we find that approximately 49±8\pm8\% of high-mass (M >> 1010.5^{10.5} M⊙_{\odot}), high luminosity (L1.4_{1.4} >> 1024^{24} W~Hz−1^{-1}) radio-AGN possess a VLBI detected counterpart. These objects show no discernible bias towards specific stellar masses, redshifts or host properties other than what is shown by the radio-AGN population in general.     Quantum Operation Time Reversal

    The dynamics of an open quantum system can be described by a quantum operation, a linear, complete positive map of operators. Here, I exhibit a compact expression for the time reversal of a quantum operation, which is closely analogous to the time reversal of a classical Markov transition matrix. Since open quantum dynamics are stochastic, and not, in general, deterministic, the time reversal is not, in general, an inversion of the dynamics. Rather, the system relaxes towards equilibrium in both the forward and reverse time directions. The probability of a quantum trajectory and the conjugate, time reversed trajectory are related by the heat exchanged with the environment.Comment: 4 page

    Influence of Inflammatory Mediators and Cytokines on Human Melanocyte Function

    The fully differentiated human melanocyte functions as a necessary and integral part of the epidermis, synthesizing melanin in intracellular organelles and transferring these pigment-containing organelles to surrounding keratino-cytes. The epidermal environment contains multiple inflammatory mediators, cytokines, and growth factors that may alter constitutive melanocyte function. Constitutive melanocyte function can also be markedly altered by release of such mediators in inflammatory dermatoses. Many of the same factors can also be released by ultraviolet radiation and psoralen + ultraviolet A treatment. These inflammatory mediators and cytokines affect not only melanocyte pigment production, but also proliferation, differentiation, immunologic susceptibility and cytotoxicity, inflammatory mediator, cytokine and matrix protein production, and cell movement.     Observation of ground-state quantum beats in atomic spontaneous emission

    We report ground-state quantum beats in spontaneous emission from a continuously driven atomic ensemble. Beats are visible only in an intensity autocorrelation and evidence spontaneously generated coherence in radiative decay. Our measurement realizes a quantum eraser where a first photon detection prepares a superposition and a second erases the "which-path" information in the intermediate state.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys.     Measurement of activation-related changes in cerebral blood volume: VASO with single-shot HASTE acquisition

    Object The recently developed vascular space occupancy (VASO) fMRI technique is gaining popularity as it facilitates the measurement of cerebral blood volume (CBV) changes concomitant with brain activation, without the use of contrast agents. Thus far, VASO fMRI has only been used in conjunction with a GE-EPI (gradient-echo echo planar imaging) sequence, which is proceeded by an inversion recovery (IR) experiment to selectively null the blood signal. The use of GE-EPI has potential disadvantages: (a) the non-zero TE may lead to BOLD contamination and (b) images suffer from the EPI-typical inhomogeneity artefacts
