Reliable encoding of information in quantum systems is crucial to all
approaches to quantum information processing or communication. This applies in
particular to photons used in linear optics quantum computing (LOQC), which is
scalable provided a deterministic single-photon emission and preparation is
available. Here, we show that narrowband photons deterministically emitted from
an atom-cavity system fulfill these requirements. Within their 500 ns coherence
time, we demonstrate a subdivision into d time bins of various amplitudes and
phases, which we use for encoding arbitrary qu-d-its. The latter is done
deterministically with a fidelity >95% for qubits, verified using a newly
developed time-resolved quantum-homodyne method.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

The relationship between cognitive developmental level and the concerns of teachers.
Against a backdrop of pressure for change in teacher education (Carnegie Forum, 1986; Holmes Group Report, 1986; United Kingdom White Paper, 1983) Feiman-Nemser and Floden (1986) produced a comprehensive review of research in the area of teacher education. Amongst other issues, they identified three broad areas of teacher development-- A model of changes in teacher concerns, a model based on cognitive-developmental theories, and a style of inservice education emphasizing teachers\u27 own perceptions of their needs. (Feiman-Nemser and Floden, 1986, p.522). Since the first two approaches seemed to possess some common characteristics in that Fuller\u27s (1969) stages of teacher concern were similar to cognitive-developmental stages, it was decided to try to establish whether there was any relationship between cognitive-developmental stage level, and the levels of concern expressed by teachers. As this study was regarded as an initial exploration of the topic, and as empirical studies in the area had produced confusing results, it was seen as an appropriate project for a qualitative approach to research. Accordingly, two groups of volunteers (12 experienced teachers from a Massachusetts elementary school, and 10 education seniors from the School of Education, University of Massachusetts, Amherst) were administered David Hunt\u27s (1978) Paragraph Completion Method (PCM) and George\u27s (1978) Teacher Concerns Questionnaire (TCQ). On the basis of Conceptual Level scores, four students and four teachers were chosen for follow-up interviews, and the interview data collated and analyzed. The results of this analysis showed that cognitive-developmental level does affect the profiles of concerns of teachers, and it can be inferred from the study that it also affects the patterns of change of teachers\u27 concerns. The results also cast some doubt on the validity of the TCQ instrument

Public Health England's recovery tools: potential teaching resources?

due to recent events involving these hazards or their use as unconventional weapons, such as the use of
the nerve agent novichok in Salisbury, UK. Health professionals need to have appropriate knowledge and
skills to effectively respond to future events involving any of these substances, which requires a rapid and
coordinated response from different professionals to protect the environment and minimise the number of
people exposed and reduce morbidity and mortality. However, despite chemical and radiation incidents
becoming increasingly prevalent, literature reviews have shown that there is a lack of teaching of
appropriate competences to face future crises in Europe, particularly amongst clinicians and other health
professionals that would be part of the initial response. Thus, De Montfort University (DMU, UK) in
collaboration with different academics from the University of Alcalá (Spain) and researchers from Public
Health England (PHE) with comprehensive experience in environmental decontamination and restoration,
have created a short training course for providing undergraduate/postgraduate students with basic skills
to respond to chemical incidents, basic skills that are based on the major competences recently identified
by the European Commission [1]. This novel training has been tested with students from different
backgrounds in various European universities, recording high degrees of acquisition of the various basic
competences that we developed to initially respond to chemical events [2]. To develop the practical part
of this chemical training, we have incorporated the novel guidance and methodology developed by PHE
to successfully tailor a protection and recovery response to any incident involving chemical substances,
which is available in the “UK Recovery Handbook for Chemical Incidents” [3] and its web-based tools:
“Chemical Recovery Navigation Tool” (CRNT, [4]) and “Chemical Recovery Record Form” (CRRF, [5]).
These innovative resources aid the user to select effective protection, decontamination and restoration
techniques or strategies from a pool of up-to-date options applicable to different environments according
to the physicochemical properties of the chemical(s) involved and the area affected. The CRNT is
accompanied by the CRRF, which facilitates collection and analysis of the necessary data to inform
decisions, and an e-learning resource named “Chemical Recovery: Background” (CRB, [6]), which could
facilitate the learning of environmental decontamination and restoration. We are currently developing a
short training course to cover minor radiation incidents; this radiation training will follow the same methods
used to develop the chemical training, but with the specific PHE recovery tools to tackle such events,
specifically the “UK Recovery Handbooks for Radiation Incidents” [7] and its associated web-based tools
“Radiation Recovery Navigation Tool” (Rad RNT, [8]), one for each environment: food production systems,
inhabited areas and drinking water supplies. This communication will explore the use of the PHE’s
Recovery Navigation Tools as potential resources to facilitate the acquisition of basic knowledge to tailor
protection and recovery interventions for minor chemical and radiation incidents to protect the public
Plume mapping and isotopic characterisation of anthropogenic methane sources
Methane stable isotope analysis, coupled with mole fraction measurement, has been used to link isotopic signature to methane emissions from landfill sites, coal mines and gas leaks in the United Kingdom. A mobile Picarro G2301 CRDS (Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy) analyser was installed on a vehicle, together with an anemometer and GPS receiver, to measure atmospheric methane mole fractions and their relative location while driving at speeds up to 80 kph. In targeted areas, when the methane plume was intercepted, air samples were collected in Tedlar bags, for delta C-13-CH4 isotopic analysis by CF-GC-IRMS (Continuous Flow Gas Chromatography-Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry). This method provides high precision isotopic values, determining delta C-13-CH4 to +/- 0.05 per mil. The bulk signature of the methane plume into the atmosphere from the whole source area was obtained by Keeling plot analysis, and a delta C-13 -CH4 signature, with the relative uncertainty, allocated to each methane source investigated. Both landfill and natural gas emissions in SE England have tightly constrained isotopic signatures. The averaged delta C-13-CH4 for landfill sites is -58 +/- 3%o. The delta C-13-CH4 signature for gas leaks is also fairly constant around -36 +/- 2 parts per thousand, a value characteristic of homogenised North Sea supply. In contrast, signatures for coal mines in N. England and Wales fall in a range of -51.2 +/- 0.3 parts per thousand to 30.9 +/- 1.4 parts per thousand, but can be tightly constrained by region. The study demonstrates that CRDS-based mobile methane measurement coupled with off-line high precision isotopic analysis of plume samples is an efficient way of characterising methane sources. It shows that iiotopic measurements allow type identification, and possible location of previously unknown methane sources. In modelling studies this measurement provides an independent constraint to determine the contributions of different sources to the regional methane budget and in the verification of inventory source distribution. The Prehistoric Fishers and Gatherers of the Northern and Western Coasts of the Arabian Sea
This chapter is a review of the prehistory of the fisher-gatherers who settled along the coasts of the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. Previous research and studies have been centred mainly on the western coasts of the Indian Ocean.
They have presented and discussed the general patterns and chronological frame of the coastal human adaptation since the early Holocene, and the recurrent presence of shell middens located close to mangrove environments. More recent research has been focussed on the northern shores of the Arabian Sea. From this region we have new evidence of the presence of fisher-gatherers communities that seasonally settled along the ancient coastline and islands of south-western Sindh and Las Bela (Balochistan) since the end of the eighth millennium BP indicating that early navigation already took place in that period. According to the archaeological evidence, the subsistence activities of these human groups were varied though seasonally based mainly on fishing and shellfish gathering. Broadly speaking marine and mangrove resources were widespread exploited along the two coasts of the Arabian Sea during favourable, well-defined periods of coastal adaptation following the varied environmental conditions and sea-level changes that took place since the beginning of the Holocene
