Absence of low-temperature dependence of the decay of 7Be and 198Au in metallic hosts
The electron-capture (EC) decay rate of 7Be in metallic Cu host and the
beta-decay rate of 198Au in the host alloy Al-Au have been measured
simultaneously at several temperatures, ranging from 0.350 K to 293 K. No
difference of the half-life of 198Au between 12.5 K and 293 K is observed to a
precision of 0.1%. By utilizing the special characteristics of our
double-source assembly, possible geometrical effects that influence the
individual rates could be eliminated. The ratio of 7Be to 198Au activity thus
obtained also remains constant for this temperatures range to the experimental
precision of 0.15(0.16)%. The resulting null temperature dependence is
discussed in terms of the inadequacy of the often-used Debye-Huckel model for

A New Precision Measurement of the 3He(4He,gamma)7Be Cross section
The 3He(4He,gamma)7Be reaction plays an important role in determining the
high energy solar neutrino flux and in understanding the abundances of
primordial 7Li. The present paper reports a new precision measurement of the
cross sections of this direct capture reaction, determined by measuring the
ensuing 7Be activity in the region of Ec.m.=400 keV to 950 keV. Various recent
theoretical fits to our data result in a consistent extrapolated value of
S34(0)=0.53(2)(1).Comment: 10 pages 3 figure
Final State Interactions and New Physics in B -> pi K Decays
Within the Standard Model, and if one assumes that soft rescattering effects
are negligible, the CP asymmetry A^dir_CP (B^\pm -> \pi^\pm K) is predicted to
be very small and the ratio R = BR(B_d -> \pi^\mp K^\pm)/BR(B^\pm -> \pi^\pm K)
provides a bound on the angle \gamma of the unitarity triangle, sin^2 \gamma
\leq R. We estimate the corrections from soft rescattering effects using an
approach based on Regge phenomenology, and find effects of order 10% with large
uncertainties. In particular, we conclude that A^dir_CP \sim 0.2 and sin^2
\gamma \sim 1.2 R could not be taken unambiguously to signal New Physics. Using
SU(3) relations, we suggest experimental tests that could constrain the size of
the soft rescattering effects thus reducing the related uncertainty. Finally,

CP asymmetries in B0 decays in the left-right model
We study time dependent CP asymmetries in B^0_{d,s} decays in the left-right
model with spontaneous breakdown of CP. Due to the new contributions to
B^0-\bar B^0 mixing the CP asymmetries can be substantially modified. Moreover,
there can be significant new contributions to the -meson decay amplitudes
from the magnetic penguins. Most promising for detection of the new physics in
the planned factories is that the CP asymmetries in the decays B--> J/\psi
K_S and B--> \phi K_S which are supposed to be equal in the standard model can
differ significantly in this class of models independently of the results in
the measurements of B--> X_s \gamma.Comment: Revised version, to appear in PR

A New Precision Measurement of the 7Be(p,gamma)8B Cross section with an Implanted 7Be Target
The 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction plays a central role in the evaluation of solar
neutrino fluxes. We report on a new precision measurement of the cross section
of this reaction, following our previous experiment with an implanted 7Be
target, a raster scanned beam and the elimination of the backscattering loss.
The new measurement incorporates a more abundant 7Be target and a number of
improvements in design and procedure. The point at Elab=991 keV was measured
several times under varying conditions, yielding a value of S17(Ec.m. =850 keV)
= 24.0(5) eV b. Measurements were carried out at lower energies as well. Due to
the precise knowledge of the implanted 7Be density profile it was possible to
reconstitute both the off- and on resonance parts of the cross section and to
obtain from the entire set of measurements an extrapolated value of
S17(0)=21.2(7) eV b.Comment: 4 Pages, 3 Figure
The lifetime of B_c-meson and some relevant problems
The lifetime of the B_c-meson is estimated with consistent considerations on
all of the heavy mesons () and the double
heavy meson B_c. In the estimate, the framework, where the non-spectator
effects for nonleptonic decays are taken into account properly, is adopted, and
the parameters needed to be fixed are treated carefully and determined by
fitting the available data. The bound-state effects in it are also considered.
We find that in decays of the meson B_c, the QCD correction terms of the
penguin diagrams and the main component terms c_1O_1, c_2O_2 of the effective
interaction Lagrangian have direct interference that causes an enhancement
about 3 ~ 4% in the total width of the B_c meson.Comment: 27 pages, 0 figur
Standard Model Matrix Elements for Neutral B-Meson Mixing and Associated Decay Constants
We present results of quenched lattice calculations of the matrix elements
relevant for B_d-\bar B_d and B_s-\bar B_s mixing in the Standard Model.
Results for the corresponding SU(3)-breaking ratios, which can be used to
constrain or determine |V_{td}|, are also given. The calculations are performed
at two values of the lattice spacing, corresponding to \beta = 6.0 and \beta =
6.2, with quarks described by a mean-field-improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert
action. As a by-product, we obtain the leptonic decay constants of B and D
mesons. We also present matrix elements relevant for D^0-\bar D^0 mixing. Our
