    The State and Development Direction of the Geodetic VLBI Station in Korea

    A permanent geodetic VLBI station with a 22-m diameter antenna will be newly constructed in Korea by the National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) under the project Korea VLBI system for Geodesy (KVG) that aims at maintaining the Korean geodetic datum accurately on the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF). KVG can receive 2, 8, 22, and 43 GHz bands simultaneously in order to conduct geodetic and astronomical VLBI observations with Korea astronomical VLBI stations along with geodetic observations with IVS stations. This simultaneous four-band receiving capability is a unique feature of the KVG system. The KVG has started officially in October 2008. A new geodetic VLBI station will be constructed at Sejong city (about 120 km south of Seoul and about 20 km north-northwest of Daejeon) and construction of all systems will be completed in 2011

    Spatial data infrastructures model for developing countries: A case study of Nigeria

    Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial TechnologiesThis research explores the basics of SDI, and investigates the National SDI of different countries. Further, the research analyses SDI implementation in developing country with specific reference to the National Geospatial Data Infrastructure (NGDI) of Nigeria. The research assesses the status and the milestones of NGDI implementation using key SDI components as assessment variables. These components were grouped into four classes: Policy and Legal Issues, Technical, Funding and People. A questionnaire survey via email was conducted on the stakeholders and users of geoinformation in Nigeria. From the analysis, the NGDI has an advantage of having a national policy backing its implementation and the establishment of the coordinating body. However, the lack of SDI directive and funding are major hurdles in the implementation of the NGDI making it lack behind most of the selected case study countries in other key components. Nigeria is also found to be applying a Mixed Model of NSDI implementation as both product model and process model are evident in the NGDI. In the real sense of access network and data sharing, NGDI is yet to be operational, though the project is going on

    AbstractFor continuous promotion of the solar PV system in buildings, it is crucial to analyze the rooftop solar PV potential. However, the rooftop solar PV potential in urban areas highly varies depending on the available rooftop area due to the building shadow. In order to estimate the available rooftop area accurately by considering the building shadow, this study proposed an estimation method of the available rooftop area for installing the rooftop solar PV system by analyzing the building shadow using Hillshade Analysis. A case study of Gangnam district in Seoul, South Korea was shown by applying the proposed estimation method

    Multi-Year Spatial Variability of the Impact of Sociodemographic, Behavioural, and Health Factors on Depression of Older Adults

    The mental health of older adults has become a critical issue with the rising suicide rate in older adults in South Korea. Various factors related to depression can make heterogeneous impacts in different regions. Yet, such spatial perspectives have been rarely integrated with the mental health studies in South Korea. This study aims to explore 1) how differently each factor of sociodemographic characteristics, social interactions, and health-related behaviors is associated with depression of older adults throughout different regions in South Korea, and 2) how those relationships change across five survey years (2008-2016) for a long term. Spatially local regression and small-multiple map visualization were applied to analyze a longitudinal panel survey dataset named KLoSA, collected in South Korea. It is found that age, marital status, in-person social contact frequency, and perceived physical health are significantly correlated with depression in more regions than other variables. The local regression coefficients and significance vary by region and year

    Public sector information access policies in Europe

    In the digital age geo-information has become embedded in our daily lives, such as navigation systems, community platforms, real estate information and weather forecasts. Everybody uses geo-information for their day-to-day decision making. Therefore, access to geo-information is of vital importance to the economic and social development of the nation. Most geo-information, especially the more valuable large scale geo-information is owned by governments all over the world. Government bodies create, collect, develop and disseminate geo-datasets and geo-information to support their public tasks. Although this information is primarily created and collected for internal use, it forms a rich resource for other public sector bodies, citizens and the private sector. There have been a number of initiatives within the European Union (EU) to provide access to and reuse of this public sector information in order to create a free flow of information and services within the EU. Initially aimed at paper documents, these initiatives had little effect on geo-information. Geo-information existed as paper maps or geo-information systems requiring specialised software. But in the last decade improved computer processing capabilities, broadband internet and interoperability of systems have led to mass digitalisation and thus better availability of information in general. EU initiatives to improve access to information, especially the 2003 Directive on reuse of public sector information, the so-called PSI Directive (2003/98/EC), should have had a flow-on effect on geo-information. But five years after adoption, its impact has not quite lead to the expected surge of value added geo-information products and services as predicted by some (e.g. PIRA, 2000; RAVI, 2000). The private sector still faces legal, financial and organisational obstacles when trying to access public sector information (e.g. MICUS, 2003 and 2008; Groot et al., 2007). So, maybe access to public sector geo-information is still not as simple as EU legislation intended it to be. The level playing field as envisioned by EU legislation may not be apparent in the geo-sector. What impact has the EU framework had on access to public sector geo-information to date? This paper will provide a description of the current EU framework. A brief history of public sector geo-information availability will be presented, and a description of the current situation in a number of European countries. The paper will finish with some conclusions and recommendations

    Discovering and Accessing Sub-national Statistics and Geospatial Data of East Asian Countries: Trends and Obstacles

    The increasing use of geographic information systems (GIS), combined with the wider availability of sub-national statistics, has recently opened up new possibilities for more interdisciplinary academic research in social sciences. Social science researchers have become more and more interested in combining geographic analysis, traditional quantitative and statistical methods in order to test hypotheses and present arguments in more effective ways. However, discovering, accessing, and using the international geospatial data and statistics is still a challenge for the researchers. As the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Global Science Forum report (2013) noted, information about the existence of micro-data and the availability of re-use is often difficult to find. Language barriers, as well as legal, cultural, and technological obstacles often exacerbate the difficulties of re-using the discovered data. In this paper, I will review types of geospatial data and sub-national statistics of East Asian countries have recently developed via central and local governments and academic institutions.     Public Sector Information Access Policies in Europe

Este ambiente proporciona experiências que favorecem sentimentos de confiança e competência, mas também inversamente, para aqueles que sentem dificuldades na obtenção de resultados e no estabelecimento de relações, diminuindo assim o auto conceito. O percurso escolar é assim perspectivado como parte integrante da construção da experiência de vida de cada aluno, com implicações nas mudanças dos papéis que desempenham, rotinas, relações e na forma como percepcionam o mundo e a si mesmos. Neste sentido, a presente investigação pretendeu através de uma abordagem descritivo-correlacional de carácter quantitativo, analisar da relação entre auto conceito e auto estima, perspectivando a sua influência nas diferenças de género, retenções, habilitações dos progenitores e nas dificuldades de aprendizagem, em alunos que se preparavam para transitar de ciclo de ensino. Para o efeito, foi recolhida uma amostra composta por 126 alunos, de ambos os sexos, com idades compreendidas entre os 14 e os 17 anos, a frequentarem o Agrupamento de Escolas da Mealhada, e residentes no mesmo concelho. Com a finalidade de obter os dados pretendidos, utilizou-se a escala de auto conceito Piers Harris e a escala de auto estima de Rosenberg e, como complemento da informação, recolhemos alguma informação sócio demográfica.The school as fundamental to the development of children and adolescents and privileged place to the processes of socialization and identity construction context, collaborates for a good organization of the self concept. This environment provides experiences that promote feelings of confidence and competence, but also conversely, for those who have difficulty in achieving results and building relationships, thus decreasing self concept. The schooling is thus viewed as an integral part of the construction of the life experience of each student, with implications of changes in the roles they play, routines, relationships and the way they perceive the world and themselves. In this sense, the present investigation sought through a descriptivecorrelational approach of quantitative nature, analyze the relationship between self concept and self esteem, foreseeing its influence on gender differences, retention, qualifications of the parents and the difficulties of learning in students preparing to move from teaching cycle. For this purpose, a composite was collected by 126 students, of both sexes, aged between 14 and 17 years sample, to attend the Group of Schools of Mealhada, resident in the same county.     Korea Geodetic VLBI Station, Sejong

    The Sejong VLBI station officially joined the IVS as a new Network Station in 2012. This report summarizes the activities of the Sejong station during 2012. The following are the activities at the station: 1) VLBI test observations were carried out with the Tsukuba 34-m antenna of the GSI in Japan. As a result, the Sejong antenna needs to improve its efficiency, which is currently in progress, 2) A survey to connect the VLBI reference point to GNSS and ground marks was conducted, and 3) To see the indirect effects of RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) at this place, we checked the omni-direction (AZ 0 to 360, EL fixed at 7) for RFI influence
