Environmentalist Predispositions and Recycled Product Preferences

    Get PDF
The study aims to uncover “environmentalist predispositions” based on the Big Five Personality with support of the theory of planned behavior and examines the effects of environmentalists’ predispositions on the recycled product preferences. Based on the big five personality traits, this paper proposes a typology on the environmentalists’ predispositions for conscious consumption studies, which consists of concern, pleasure, consciousness, beliefs, and norms. The method of the empirical study is a self-reported survey with a sample of 256 participants from a developing economy. The results of the factor analyses confirm the five-dimensional theoretical construct of individuals’ predispositions towards environmentalism. Furthermore, multiple regression analyses for testing the associations of the environmentalist predispositions on recycled product preferences disclose that among five of the dimensions, environmentalist consciousness, environmentalist beliefs, and environmentalist norms have joint effects on preferring a recycled product. This study is one of the preliminary attempts that examines the effects of environmentalist predispositions on a conscious consumption choice, specifically on preferring the recycled products, as a green purchasing behavior type

Discovering the food travel preferences of university students

    Get PDF
The main purposes of this study are to understand the perspectives of university students on food tourism and to discover their gastronomic travel preferences. 89 responses were gathered from a university in Izmir (on the west coast of Turkey) by using a structured interview technique. The data were analyzed through the descriptive methods including frequency analysis. Results indicate that the students\u27 food travel preferences significantly vary due to their gastronomic motivations. The vast majority of these potential consumers consider going on a food-related travel in the future. Kebab, doner and baklava have an advantage over other dishes in terms of representing the region and becoming a brand. Participants believe that Turkey, Italy, Mexico, France and Spain are the top five countries that offer the best food experience. This study makes a considerable contribution to the literature on gastronomic preferences of young people through in-depth interviews. This exploratory research sheds light on this field of study for researchers, practitioners and food tourism professionals

A Qualitative Study on the Pride Notion of Tourism and Hospitality Students in Turkey

Tourism, as a sociological, psychological, economic and environmental phenomenon, has various impacts on the perceptions of both visitors and residents of a destination due to the interaction between hosts and guests. Besides, tourism industry poses a challenge of attracting and retaining quality employees for an increasing number of tourism and hospitality businesses on both international and national scales. In this research, a qualitative approach is used to analyse the sense of pride and Young Turks’ willingness to work in the tourism industry as well as their job preferences. Results revealed that among 50 interviewed respondents, 48 percent have the tendency to give up working in the tourism and hospitality industry due to late working hours, tough working conditions, low wages, lack of holidays, lack of caring employees and lack of professionalism. Pride really matters for the 37 percent of respondents who mentioned that the feeling of pride had an influence on their decision of staying in the hospitality industry

Experimental Investigation of the Electrical Wiring Configuration of the HK40 Hall Thruster Operation

Vacuum chambers providing a low pressure environment similar to the vacuum environment in low earth orbit have been used for the testing of plasma thrusters. A signi!cant proportion of research on the effects of vacuum facility on plasma thrusters has focused on the effects of background pressure and plume expansion; however, the electrical interaction of the conductive chamber walls with the plasma thrusters needs to be explored further. In this study, the operation of a prototype Hall thruster, HK40, was investigated to understand the effects of wiring configuration of the thruster-cathode-chamber system. During the tests, the thruster was operated in two different grounding configurations. A resistance analogy regarding the changes in the electrical potentials and measured currents was introduced. The calculated thrust and efficiency values of the two configurations were compared. This study shows that the current extracted from the emitter surface of the cathode, along with the cathode-to- ground voltage can be used to estimate the thrust and thruster efficiency. In addition, the theoretical predictions were compared with the values based on the measurements made with an in-house-built inverted pendulum type thrust stand. The presented results show that the thrust and efficiency values are predicted with 3.4% and 8.3% uncertainty, respectively.

Length-weight relationships of 28 fish species caught from demersal trawl survey in the Middle Black Sea, Turkey

This study provides updated the length-weight relationships and Fulton's condition factor of 28 fish species belonging to 23 families from the Black Sea. Samples were collected along the depths between 0-100 meters by demersal trawl surveys conducted seasonally from May 2017 to September 2019. A total of 83,885 specimens were collected. The length-weight relationships and Fulton's condition factor, minimum, maximum and mean lengths, total weights, descriptive statistics, and growth type were provided for all the species. The results indicate that LWR parameters of b varied from 2.2039 to 3.737 and Fulton's condition factor varied between 0.004 and 1.18. These findings could be useful for monitoring and management of sustainable fisheries and habitat health

The genetic structure of the Turkish population reveals high levels of variation and admixture

The construction of population-based variomes has contributed substantially to our understanding of the genetic basis of human inherited disease. Here, we investigated the genetic structure of Turkey from 3,362 unrelated subjects whose whole exomes (n = 2,589) or whole genomes (n = 773) were sequenced to generate a Turkish (TR) Variome that should serve to facilitate disease gene discovery in Turkey. Consistent with the history of present-day Turkey as a crossroads between Europe and Asia, we found extensive admixture between Balkan, Caucasus, Middle Eastern, and European populations with a closer genetic relationship of the TR population to Europeans than hitherto appreciated. We determined that 50% of TR individuals had high inbreeding coefficients (≥0.0156) with runs of homozygosity longer than 4 Mb being found exclusively in the TR population when compared to 1000 Genomes Project populations. We also found that 28% of exome and 49% of genome variants in the very rare range (allele frequency < 0.005) are unique to the modern TR population. We annotated these variants based on their functional consequences to establish a TR Variome containing alleles of potential medical relevance, a repository of homozygous loss-of-function variants and a TR reference panel for genotype imputation using high-quality haplotypes, to facilitate genome-wide association studies. In addition to providing information on the genetic structure of the modern TR population, these data provide an invaluable resource for future studies to identify variants that are associated with specific phenotypes as well as establishing the phenotypic consequences of mutations in specific genes
