    Benzoxazoles as novel herbicidal agents

    Despite the need to develop new herbicides with different modes of action, due to weed resistance, many important classes of compounds have been studied poorly for this purpose. Benzoxazoles are considered privileged structures because of their biological activities, but their phytotoxic activities have not received a lot of attention until now.Double vinylic substitution reactions were carried out to furnish four 2‐nitromethylbenzoxazoles and one oxazolidine. Benzoxazol‐2‐ylmethanamine was obtained by reduction of compound 3a. These compounds were evaluated for their phytotoxicity in Allium cepa (onion), Solanum lycopersicum (tomato), Cucumis sativus (cucumber) and Sorghum bicolor (sorghum). Comparison with oxazolidine analogue allowed us to understand that the benzoxazolic structure is very important for the herbicidal activity. All the synthesized compounds exhibited biological activity on seed germination. The four 2‐nitromethylbenzoxazoles showed phytotoxic activity and the 5‐chloro‐2‐(nitromethyl)benzo[d]oxazole (3b) exhibited higher inhibition than the commercial herbicide against all four plant species tested. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

    Characterization of the genetic diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in São Paulo city, Brazil

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Tuberculosis is a major health problem in São Paulo, Brazil, which is the most populous and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in South America. To characterize the genetic diversity of <it>Mycobacterium tuberculosis </it>in the population of this city, the genotyping techniques of spoligotyping and MIRU were applied to 93 isolates collected in two consecutive years from 93 different tuberculosis patients residing in São Paulo city and attending the Clemente Ferreira Institute (the reference clinic for the treatment of tuberculosis).</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Spoligotyping generated 53 different spoligotype patterns. Fifty-one isolates (54.8%) were grouped into 13 spoligotyping clusters. Seventy- two strains (77.4%) showed spoligotypes described in the international databases (SpolDB4, SITVIT), and 21 (22.6%) showed unidentified patterns. The most frequent spoligotype families were Latin American Mediterranean (LAM) (26 isolates), followed by the T family (24 isolates) and Haarlem (H) (11 isolates), which together accounted for 65.4% of all the isolates. These three families represent the major genotypes found in Africa, Central America, South America and Europe. Six Spoligo-International-types (designated SITs by the database) comprised 51.8% (37/72) of all the identified spoligotypes (SIT53, SIT50, SIT42, SIT60, SIT17 and SIT1). Other SITs found in this study indicated the great genetic diversity of <it>M. tuberculosis</it>, reflecting the remarkable ethnic diversity of São Paulo city inhabitants. The MIRU technique was more discriminatory and did not identify any genetic clusters with 100% similarity among the 93 isolates. The allelic analysis showed that MIRU loci 26, 40, 23 and 10 were the most discriminatory. When MIRU and spoligotyping techniques were combined, all isolates grouped in the 13 spoligotyping clusters were separated.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data indicated the genomic stability of over 50% of spoligotypes identified in São Paulo and the great genetic diversity of <it>M. tuberculosis </it>isolates in the remaining SITs, reflecting the large ethnic mix of the São Paulo city inhabitants. The results also indicated that in this city, <it>M. tuberculosis </it>isolates acquired drug resistance independently of genotype and that resistance was more dependent on the selective pressure of treatment failure and the environmental circumstances of patients.</p

    ATLANTIC EPIPHYTES: a data set of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte plants and lichens from the Atlantic Forest

    Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest.     USO DA BOLA TERAPÊUTICA NO EQUILÍBRIO ESTÁTICO E DINÂMICO DE PACIENTES COM HEMIPARESIA

    INTRODUÇÃO: O acidente vascular encefálico (AVE) é descrito pela Organização Mundial de Saúde como um sinal clínico de rápido desenvolvimento de perturbação focal cerebral, de suposta origem vascular e com mais de 24 horas de duração; pode apresentar como sequela a hemiplegia ou hemiparesia. A bola suíça é um instrumento útil no tratamento da hemiparesia, podendo ser utilizada para avaliar e tratar problemas de equilíbrio. OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a eficácia da utilização da bola terapêutica para melhora do equilíbrio estático e dinâmico em pacientes hemiparéticos. METODOLOGIA: A amostra constituiu-se de 09 pacientes, com diagnóstico de AVE na fase crônica, que apresentam hemiparesia e que foram submetidos a um programa de fisioterapia com bola terapêutica durante 02 meses. Para avaliação dos pacientes foi utilizada a Escala de Tinetti. RESULTADOS: Foram avaliadas as condições de equilíbrio estático e dinâmico (marcha), sendo que estas apresentaram resultado satisfatório. Todos os pacientes apresentaram aumento do escore ao final do tratamento, demonstrando resultado positivo na aplicação do protocolo. CONCLUSÃO: Concluímos que o protocolo utilizado neste estudo apresentou um resultado significativo com relação à melhora do equilíbrio estático e dinâmico
