The âhealth recordâ of the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Pontecurone: contamination between historical knowledge and non-destructive testing results
The historical architecture of the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Pontecurone (Alessandria, Italy), of late medieval origins and with significant transformations until the 20th century, is a clear palimpsest of different construction and decorative phases. Nowadays, although used as a parish church, it shows a critical framework of alterations. The need to best rearrange the data in preparation for a wished restoration program required the involvement of a team of experts from the Politecnico di Torino â as members of a protocol agreement â to verify the current state of conservation of the building.
Between 2019 and 2022, the study focused on examining rich but dispersed and fragmented historical sources, which provided important information for the knowledge of architectural components. In the meantime, an NDT diagnostic campaign to understand non-visible phenomena and structural problems was carried out. In particular, infrared thermography allowed the comprehension of the vaulted systems laying, the mapping of fissures and the reading of the stains caused by infiltration and rising dampness. Moreover, thanks to an innovative application of this technique, it was possible to evaluate the heating system's effectiveness through the survey of the distribution of hot air flows in the room context and on the surfaces. Instead, endoscopic inspections revealed the stratigraphy under the floor level, which is completely damaged, and resistograph analysis verified the quality of the antique roof trusses at some significant points.
The contribution will deal in detail with the systematization of the data in the health record, a tool already tested in other contexts (such as at Chambord Castle, to which this project refers) that can be constantly implemented and easily consulted. Furthermore, it easily communicates and records the knowledge about the building, relating historical information with results obtained from the application of non-destructive testing
Charles Buls e il restauro. Antologia critica / Charles Buls et la restauration. Anthologie critique
Italian/French bilingual e-book. Monography in the âNuova serie di Architetturaâ series published by Editore Franco Angeli, Milan. An Italian/French bilingual work resulting from research funded by the Premio Giovani Ricercatori Politecnico di Torino 2011. The research, carried out in 2013, and the work, enjoy the moral patronage of the Italian Culture Institute in Brussels. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, Charles Buls (1837-1914), traveller, publicist, aesthete, burgomaster of the city of Brussels, known for his studies of âurban artâ, analysed the problems of the conservation of historical cities, where petitions for the defence of constructions entwine, on one hand with the desire to preserve the picturesque views, and on the other with the need for Bulsâ writings on the restoration of monuments and the urban environment, composed between 1903 and 1914, making both the scientific transcription in Belgian French and the translation into Italian available. Charles Bulsâ restoration works, while being referred to by numerous studies due to the influence of his thoughts on the successive approach by Gustavo Giovannoni, were still largely inaccessible and unexplored by Italian literature on restoration, as were his travel diaries. Described by the founders of the culture of informed urban design, a co-leader with Joseph StĂŒbben, Louis Cloquet, Cornelius Gurlitt and Paul Clemen, polyglot and widely introduced into the European cultural enclaves of the time focused on defending material heritage, Buls articulated his theories and critical orientations based on his experience as pedagogue and public administrator â with a strong liberal, reformative and moral imprint â and on the influence received from the thoughts of Hugo, Ruskin and Viollet-le-Duc. A reflection on Bulsâ contribution to the debate on restauration, related to Italian and international theoretic statutes, is traced in the book, with the examination of the texts collected in the anthology and the critical perusal of his papers and study notes. Long trips to Italy from the first Grand Tour in 1860 to the more frequent and prolonged stays between 1901 and 1909, led Buls to entertain relations with certain central figures of the history of conservation and to have his own influence on cultural horizons. This close network of relationships, documented in his Carnets de voyages, most of which are unpublished and kept in the Archives de la Ville de Bruxelles â where the research was carried out, in the Buls Archive Collection and in his printed works, which were previously part of his personal library, left in his will to the Archives â, indicates a circulation of ideas on a European scale which exceeds the confines of the disciplinary sphere of restoration./ Voyageur, publiciste, esthĂšte, bourgmestre de la ville de Bruxelles, rĂ©putĂ© pour ses travaux sur lâArt Public, Charles Buls (1837-1914) a approfondi, entre les XIXe et XXe siĂšcles, les problĂ©matiques portant sur la conservation de la ville historique, lĂ oĂč les instances liĂ©es Ă la protection du patrimoine se mĂȘlent dâune part Ă la volontĂ© de sauvegarder et prĂ©server lâidentitĂ© ancienne, dâautre part aux exigences novatrices face au progrĂšs technologique et social.
ENG: The Residences of the Royal House of Savoy entered the World Heritage List in 1997, a fertile year of recognition for Italian Heritage. It is a serial site, made up of monumental architectures that characterise the former capital city (Turin) and country delights, with gardens and parks, whose recognition and systematization have been substantially accomplished. However, in their heterogeneity, each of the assets reveals some unresolved nuclei (due to their vast size and scarcity of resources), which institutional protection must oversee and which simultaneously express potential values and attractions. The contribution illustrates several projects developed in contact with the material and cultural reality of the Residences, in particular AgliĂš, Govone and Racconigi, in agreement with the Institutes of protection and the property owners, concerning various spaces awaiting restoration and enhancement, which are currently unused and outside the visitor routes. The approach is measured with continuous changes of scale and irreproducible values: from the cultural landscape to the site, to the building system, to the historical-artistic framework, but also with the complexity of the stratifications, with the original reasons of patronage, with the existing cultural offer. The focal point of the project is the search for renewed functions, or âimprovementsâ, that promote the preservation of historical architecture and its role as an active resource towards the future. Cogent issues in the debate on restoration emerge, such as the search for a balance between conservation and innovation, the provision of fruition that combines ethics, involvement and inclusion, the pursuit of quality in the intervention between the ârule of artâ and environmental sustainability, between exceptionality, universality and a renewed cultural demand that is affected by the difficult historical period we are going through

The issues concerning Ruskinâs reception are examined in relation to two key aspects of his cultural legacy: the exploration of Italian heritage as a perceptive and interrogative source, and the appropriation of this heritage as part of the objective of conservation. The study draws upon the Italian travel carnets of Charles Buls (1837-1914), a Belgian publicist, aesthete and art critic who provided a decisive impetus for the codification of urban-scale restoration. The travel notebooks, largely unpublished and held at the Archives de la Ville de Bruxelles, document his movements within the Peninsula between 1901 and 1909, retracing some of the stages of Ruskinâs journey. This connection can also be traced by reading through Bulsâ texts dedicated to restoration. Here, the reference to Ruskinâs opinions is explicit and prevalent in the understanding of conservation as a social emergency, or even in the promotion of craftsmanship and teaching in the artistic field, within the context of the Arts and Crafts culture

The protection of cultural heritage in Piedmont, during the post-war period between 1953 and 1976, was assigned to Superintendent Umberto Chierici (architect, 1911-1980), who directed conservation policies with continuity, carrying out the restoration project of many monuments and pursuing university teaching experience. During his long commitment in Turin (after services in Calabria, Abruzzo and Molise), he explored urban restoration in historical centres, restored the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy as an organic heritage system, promoted the reorganisation of museums, held conferences, and published critical and historiographical essays. The contribution explores three little-known restoration sites of his work in the Soprintendenza, those of Santa Giustina in Sezzadio abbey, the San Francesco in Cuneo and the San Lorenzo in Montiglio churches in southern Piedmont, using unpublished archive documents. The aim is to verify Chiericiâs adherence to the theoretical assumptions of restoration at the time and his contribution to the definition of scientific methodologies for conservation
Learning from Heritage mostra come, attraverso una riflessione progettuale che coinvolge una pluralitĂ di soggetti, sia possibile configurare una rigenerazione che si incardina sullâalto valore delle preesistenze, da restituire alla collettivitĂ .The presentation of a series of projects about the restoration of the farmhouse and the castle of Parpaglia at Candiolo, at Parco di Stupinigi, is an opportunity to make methodical and prescribing remarks, but also multidisciplinary operational thinking.
Learning from Heritage shows how, through a planning consideration, which involves a plurality of subjects, it is possible to establish a renewal that is based on the high value of pre-existent things that must be given back to collectivity
