Geochronology and petrogenesis of late-Variscan plutonism (NW Portugal) : synthesis and inferences on crustal recycling and growth
In NW Portugal large volumes of granitoids were emplaced during the post-collisional stage of the Variscan orogeny. This was the main period of successive granite generation, which exhibit different chemical and isotopic signatures. Geochronological and petrogenetic results are presented and inferences on the geodynamic evolution of the Iberian Variscides are discussed

Correlations between peripheral parasite load and common clinical and laboratory alterations in dogs with visceral leishmaniasis
Intensity of peripheral parasite infection has an important role in the transmission of Leishmania spp. from one host to another. As parasite load quantification is still an expensive procedure to be used routinely in epidemiological surveillance, the use of surrogate predictors may be an important asset in the identification of dogs with high transmitting ability. The present study examined whether common clinical and laboratory alterations can serve as predictors of peripheral parasitism in dogs naturally infected with Leishmania spp. Thirty-seven dogs were examined in order to establish correlations between parasite load (PL) in multiple peripheral tissues and common clinical and laboratory findings in canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). Quantitative polymerase chain reaction was employed to determine PL in conjunctival swabs, ear skin, peripheral blood and buffy coat. Additionally, a series of hematological, biochemical and oxidative stress markers were quantified. Correlations between net peripheral infection and severity of clinical alterations and variation in laboratory parameters were assessed through a new analytical approach, namely Compressed Parasite Load Data (CPLD), which uses dimension reduction techniques from multivariate statistics to summarize PL across tissues into a single variable. The analysis revealed that elevation in PL is positively correlated with severity of clinical sings commonly observed in CVL, such as skin lesions, ophthalmic alterations, onycogriphosis, popliteal lymphadenomegaly and low body mass. Furthermore, increase in PL was found to be followed by intensification of non-regenerative anemia, neutrophilia, eosinopenia, hepatic injury and oxidative imbalance. These results suggest that routinely used clinical and laboratory exams can be predictive of intensity of peripheral parasite infection, which has an important implication in the identification of dogs with high transmitting ability
SITIS - Plant Phenotyping Platform.
Plant phenotyping in greenhouse requires high physical effort for management and data collection. To minimize this effort, SITIS Platform of Plant Phenotyping for Drought Tolerance was projected and built by Embrapa Rice and Beans to automate the management and data collections in greenhouse and consists of 384 columns of soil (diameter: 25 cm; height: 100 cm) placed on an digital scale with individualized monitoring of the water supply. SITIS is composed by two integrated modules: 1) SITIS Web ? responsible by the planning and supervision of the environment variables, irrigation during the experiment and recording the resultsEditores: Paulo Sérgio de Paula Herrmann Junior, Paulino Ribeiro Villas Boas
Bioinsecticide-Predator interactions: Azadirachtin behavioral and reproductive impairment of the coconut mite predator Neoseiulus baraki
Synthetic pesticide use has been the dominant form of pest control since the 1940s. However, biopesticides are emerging as sustainable pest control alternatives, with prevailing use in organic agricultural production systems. Foremost among botanical biopesticides is the limonoid azadirachtin, whose perceived environmental safety has come under debate and scrutiny in recent years. Coconut production, particularly organic coconut production, is one of the agricultural systems in which azadirachtin is used as a primary method of pest control for the management of the invasive coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae). The management of this mite species also greatly benefits from predation by Neoseiulus baraki (Athias-Henriot) (Acari: Phytoseiidae). Here, we assessed the potential behavioral impacts of azadirachtin on the coconut mite predator, N. baraki. We explored the effects of this biopesticide on overall predator activity, female searching time, and mating behavior and fecundity. Azadirachtin impairs the overall activity of the predator, reducing it to nearly half; however, female searching was not affected. In contrast, mating behavior was compromised by azadirachtin exposure particularly when male predators were exposed to the biopesticide. Consequently, predator fecundity was also compromised by azadirachtin, furthering doubts about its environmental safety and selectivity towards biological control agents
Geoelectric method applied in correlation between physical characteristics and electrical properties of the soil.
This paper presents the study of the relationship between electrical properties and physical characteristics of the soil. Measures of apparent electrical resistivity of the soil were made for different types of soil, varying moisture content gradually while maintaining a constant compaction, and then varying the compaction and relating it to a constant humidity. Development of a correlation surface is proposed in order to identify granulometry of the soil from moisture and compaction measurements. For the study of spatial variability, two areas were chosen to allow the change of moisture content and compaction in order to verify the measurement capacity of apparent electrical resistivity of the soil as methodology to identify change in soil dynamics. Results obtained show correlations among apparent electrical resistivity of the soil, moisture, soil compaction and clay content
Photometric redshifts from reconstructed QSO templates
From SDSS commissioning photometric and spectroscopic data, we investigate
the utility of photometric redshift techniques to the task of estimating QSO
redshifts. We consider empirical methods (e.g. nearest-neighbor searches and
polynomial fitting), standard spectral template fitting and hybrid approaches
(i.e. training spectral templates from spectroscopic and photometric
observations of QSOs). We find that in all cases, due to the presence of strong
emission-lines within the QSO spectra, the nearest-neighbor and template
fitting methods are superior to the polynomial fitting approach. Applying a
novel reconstruction technique, we can, from the SDSS multicolor photometry,
reconstruct a statistical representation of the underlying SEDs of the SDSS
QSOs. Although, the reconstructed templates are based on only broadband
photometry the common emission lines present within the QSO spectra can be
recovered in the resulting spectral energy distributions. The technique should
be useful in searching for spectral differences among QSOs at a given redshift,
in searching for spectral evolution of QSOs, in comparing photometric redshifts
for objects beyond the SDSS spectroscopic sample with those in the well
calibrated photometric redshifts for objects brighter than 20th magnitude and
in searching for systematic and time variable effects in the SDSS broad band
photometric and spectral photometric calibrations.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, LaTeX AASTeX, submitted to A

Photometric Redshifts of Quasars
We demonstrate that the design of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) filter
system and the quality of the SDSS imaging data are sufficient for determining
accurate and precise photometric redshifts (``photo-z''s) of quasars. Using a
sample of 2625 quasars, we show that photo-z determination is even possible for
z<=2.2 despite the lack of a strong continuum break that robust photo-z
techniques normally require. We find that, using our empirical method on our
sample of objects known to be quasars, approximately 70% of the photometric
redshifts are correct to within delta z = 0.2; the fraction of correct
photometric redshifts is even better for z>3. The accuracy of quasar
photometric redshifts does not appear to be dependent upon magnitude to nearly
21st magnitude in i'. Careful calibration of the color-redshift relation to
21st magnitude may allow for the discovery of on the order of 10^6 quasars
candidates in addition to the 10^5 quasars that the SDSS will confirm
spectroscopically. We discuss the efficient selection of quasar candidates from
imaging data for use with the photometric redshift technique and the potential
scientific uses of a large sample of quasar candidates with photometric
redshifts.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, submitted to A
