Analysis of Principal Components of the Sea Ice Concentration Fields in the Barents Sea
The processes of interaction within the ocean-sea ice-atmosphere system which influence a multiyear ice cover dynamics in the Barents Sea are investigated. Being analyzed, the principal components of the sea ice concentration fields in the Barents Sea make it possible to distinguish three modes of inter-annual variability of the sea ice concentration. It is shown that the first mode describes 65.4 % of the sea ice concentration total variance and its multiyear trend. The second mode (10.8 %) is related to the variations of the heat inflow due to the sea currents governed by the atmospheric circulation. The third one (7.8 %) is associated with variability of the total turbulent heat flux from the ocean to the atmosphere at the boundary of the ice edge in the northern Barents Sea
Ultrasonically assisted drilling of rocks
Conventional drilling of rocks can generate significant damage in the drilled material; a material layer is often split off a back surface of a sample during drilling, negatively affecting its strength. To improve finish quality, ultrasonically assisted drilling (UAD) was employed in two rocks - sandstone and marble. Damage areas in both materials were reduced in UAD when compared to conventional drilling. Reductions in a thrust force and a torque reduction were observed only for UAD in marble; ultrasonic assistance in sandstone drilling did not result in improvements in this regard
InnovatIve methods to estImate athletes' predIsposItIon to cyclIc and complex coordInatIon sports
Objective of the study was to analyze and substantiate the effectiveness of innovative methods for assessing athletesβ predisposition to cyclic and complex coordination sports. Methods and structure of the study. Sampled for the study were the highly-skilled student-athletes of the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sports, Youth and Tourism and Polessky State University (Pinsk, Republic of Belarus), specializing in academic rowing, swimming, artistic gymnastics, and rifle and pistol shooting. The study was conducted at the premises of the Institute for Sports and Sports Medicine Research at Russian State University of Physical Education, Sports, Youth and Tourism and Applied-Research Laboratory "Longitudinal Studies" at Polessky State University. A total of 75 junior athletes engaged in cyclic and complex coordination sports were examined. A set of innovative methods for assessing the athletesβ predisposition to cyclic and complex coordination sports included molecular-genetic and psycho-physiological diagnostics of the subjects. Results and conclusions. The innovative methods for evaluating athletesβ individual capabilities in a long-term training process enable to accurately determine their predisposition to a chosen sport. During the study, we created a DNA bank of the junior athletes and an electronic database that reflects the study findings. Relations between parameters of fracture processes on different scale levels

Abstract: The processes of ultrasonically-assisted drilling (UAD) and the dynamic tests on split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB), fracture in which is implemented at various structural-scale levels, are considered. The simulation of UAD based on the Hertz contact problem and the structuralβtime criterion is presented. The problem of using the value of the fracture incubation time and its linear size obtained from the tests on SHPB in the simulation is considered. A principle of equal power is used for converting the strength parameters into another structuralβscale level. The theoretical curve obtained in the simulation is compared with the results of experiments on conventional drilling (CD) and UAD

Quantum-chemical modeling of squaric acid ferroelectric behavior
The properties of layered 2d-ferroelectric and at the same time 3d-antiferroelectric materials H2C4O4/D 2C4O4 are studied by quantum-chemical approach using pseudospin formalism in frames of Ising-type model Hamiltonian with tunneling terms. This Hamiltonian parameters (that are Ξ© - tunneling integral and Jij- Ising parameters) for both materials were obtained by means of RHF, MP2-MP4 and DFT/B3LYP calculations for different clusters which simulate characteristic fragments of materials crystalline structure. Resulting Ξ© and Jij values for crystals at hand were used in the limits of two mean field approximations that allow explaining main peculiarities of the observed order-disorder phase transition. The nature is discussed of the Bethe cluster lowest energy level splitting that has been introduced for correct description of this transition. Copyright Β© 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
