Toxicity testing: ecological relevance and relative efficacy and costs of toxicity tests in the South African context
The Direct Estimation of Ecological Effect Potential (DEEEP) is a suite of toxicological methods that was compiled to facilitate management of effluent discharges. DEEEP used a range of tests to assess different endpoints and test taxa from differing trophic levels. It was used at pilot scale but never adopted in South Africa formally. The use of toxicological testing in managing effluent discharge has been somewhat ad-hoc since. This study examined a range of tests for undertaking toxicological assessments of effluent from the perspectives of ecological realism, test tractability, and cost of testing. The assays assessed include some from DEEEP, some using South African test taxa, and some using commercial toxicity test kits. Results indicate that, in terms of returned endpoints, no clear difference between tests using immobilized and cultured or wildcollected test taxa was present. Culture maintenance was found to be a significant contributor to test costs where cultured test taxa were used (although culture costs are implicit in test kit costs too). Costing analysis looked at scenarios where equipment could be shared and reused, and how these contribute to laboratory costs. The research leads on to suggestions for testing implementation in laboratories while maximizing ecological realism and minimizing costs.

Remarks on the Central Limit Theorem for Non-Convex Bodies
In this note, we study possible extensions of the Central Limit Theorem for
non-convex bodies. First, we prove a Berry-Esseen type theorem for a certain
class of unconditional bodies that are not necessarily convex. Then, we
consider a widely-known class of non-convex bodies, the so-called p-convex
bodies, and construct a counter-example for this class
Opportunistic Multi-sensor Fusion for Robust Navigation in Smart Environments
Proceedings of: Workshop on User-Centric Technologies and Applications (CONTEXTS 2011), Salamanca, April 6-8, 2011This paper presents the design of a navigation system for multiple autonomous robotic platforms. It performs multisensor fusion using a Monte Carlo Bayesian filter, and has been designed to maximize information acquisition. Apart from sensors equipped in the mobile platform, the system can dynamically integrate observations from friendly external sensing entities, increasing robustness and making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor operation. A multi-agent layer manages the information acquisition process, making it transparent for the core filtering solution. Statistics of soliton-bearing systems with additive noise
We present a consistent method to calculate the probability distribution of
soliton parameters in systems with additive noise. Even though a weak noise is
considered, we are interested in probabilities of large fluctuations (generally
non-Gaussian) which are beyond perturbation theory. Our method is a further
development of the instanton formalism (method of optimal fluctuation) based on
a saddle-point approximation in the path integral. We first solve a fundamental
problem of soliton statistics governing by noisy Nonlinear Schr\"odinger
Equation (NSE). We then apply our method to optical soliton transmission
systems using signal control elements (filters, amplitude and phase

Discrete element modelling of creep of asphalt mixtures
Creep tests on asphalt mixtures have been undertaken under four stress levels in the laboratory while the Discrete Element Model (DEM) has been used to simulate the laboratory tests. A modified Burger’s model has been used to represent the time-dependent behaviour of an asphalt mixture by adding time-dependent moment and torsional resistance at contacts. Parameters were chosen to give the correct stress-strain response for constant strain rate tests in Cai et al. (2013) . The stress-strain response for the laboratory creep tests and the simulations were recorded. The DEM results show reasonable agreement with the experiments. The creep simulation results proved to be dependent on both bond strength variability and positions of the particles. Bond breakage was recorded during the simulations and used to investigate the micro-mechanical deformation behaviour of the asphalt mixtures. An approach based on dimensional analysis is also presented in this paper to reduce the computational time during the creep simulation, and this analysis is also a new contribution
Non-overlapping Distributed Tracking System Utilizing Particle Filter
Tracking people across multiple cameras is a challenging research area in visual computing, especially when these cameras have non-overlapping field of views. The important task is to associate a current subject with other prior appearances of the same subject across time and space in a camera network. Several known techniques rely on Bayesian approaches to perform the matching task. However, these approaches do not scale well when the dimension of the problem increases; e.g. when the number of subject or possible path increases. The aim of this paper is to propose a unified tracking framework using particle filters to efficiently switch between visual tracking (field of view tracking) and track prediction (non-overlapping region tracking). The particle filter tracking system utilizes a map (known environment) to assist the tracking process when targets leave the field of view of any camera. We implemented and tested this tracking approach in an in-house multiple cameras system as well as using on-line data. Promising results were obtained which suggested the feasibility of such an approach
A randomized controlled trial of high-intensity exercise and executive functioning in cognitively normal older adults
Background
There is a paucity of interventional research that systematically assesses the role of exercise intensity and cardiorespiratory fitness, and their relationship with executive function in older adults. To address this limitation, we have examined the effect of a systematically manipulated exercise intervention on executive function.
Methods
Ninety-nine cognitively normal participants (age = 69.10 ± 5.2 years; n = 54 female) were randomized into either a high-intensity cycle-based exercise, moderate-intensity cycle-based exercise, or no-intervention control group. All participants underwent neuropsychological testing and fitness assessment at baseline (preintervention), 6-month follow-up (postintervention), and 12-month postintervention. Executive function was measured comprehensively, including measures of each subdomain: Shifting, Updating/ Working Memory, Inhibition, Verbal Generativity, and Nonverbal Reasoning. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured by analysis of peak aerobic capacity; VO2peak.
Results
First, the exercise intervention was found to increase cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2peak) in the intervention groups, in comparison to the control group (F =10.40, p≤0.01). However, the authors failed to find mean differences in executive function scores between the high-intensity, moderate intensity, or inactive control group. On the basis of change scores, cardiorespiratory fitness was found to associate positively with the executive function (EF) subdomains of Updating/Working Memory (β = 0.37, p = 0.01, r = 0.34) and Verbal Generativity (β = 0.30, p = 0.03, r = 0.28) for intervention, but not control participants.
Conclusion
At the aggregate level, the authors failed to find evidence that 6-months of high-intensity aerobic exercise improves EF in older adults. However, it remains possible that individual differences in experimentally induced changes in cardiorespiratory fitness may be associated with changes in Updating/ Working Memory and Verbal Generativity
User-friendly tail bounds for sums of random matrices
This paper presents new probability inequalities for sums of independent,
random, self-adjoint matrices. These results place simple and easily verifiable
hypotheses on the summands, and they deliver strong conclusions about the
large-deviation behavior of the maximum eigenvalue of the sum. Tail bounds for
the norm of a sum of random rectangular matrices follow as an immediate
corollary. The proof techniques also yield some information about matrix-valued
martingales.
In other words, this paper provides noncommutative generalizations of the
classical bounds associated with the names Azuma, Bennett, Bernstein, Chernoff,
Hoeffding, and McDiarmid. The matrix inequalities promise the same diversity of
application, ease of use, and strength of conclusion that have made the scalar
