Simultaneous determination of arsenic, manganese and selenium in human serum by neutron activation analysis
Squeezed States in the de Sitter Vacuum
We discuss the treatment of squeezed states as excitations in the Euclidean
vacuum of de Sitter space. A comparison with the treatment of these states as
candidate no-particle states, or alpha-vacua, shows important differences
already in the free theory. At the interacting level alpha-vacua are
inconsistent, but squeezed state excitations seem perfectly acceptable. Indeed,
matrix elements can be renormalized in the excited states using precisely the
standard local counterterms of the Euclidean vacuum. Implications for

Tall tales from de Sitter space II: Field theory dualities
We consider the evolution of massive scalar fields in (asymptotically) de
Sitter spacetimes of arbitrary dimension. Through the proposed dS/CFT
correspondence, our analysis points to the existence of new nonlocal dualities
for the Euclidean conformal field theory. A massless conformally coupled scalar
field provides an example where the analysis is easily explicitly extended to
'tall' background spacetimes.Comment: 31 pages, 2 figure
Strings in Homogeneous Background Spacetimes
The string equations of motion for some homogeneous (Kantowski-Sachs, Bianchi
I and Bianchi IX) background spacetimes are given, and solved explicitly in
some simple cases. This is motivated by the recent developments in string
cosmology, where it has been shown that, under certain circumstances, such
spacetimes appear as string-vacua.
Both tensile and null strings are considered. Generally, it is much simpler
to solve for the null strings since then we deal with the null geodesic
equations of General Relativity plus some additional constraints.
We consider in detail an ansatz corresponding to circular strings, and we
discuss the possibility of using an elliptic-shape string ansatz in the case of
homogeneous (but anisotropic) backgrounds.Comment: 25 pages, REVTE
Triple oxygen isotopic composition of the high-<sup>3</sup>He/<sup>4</sup>He mantle
Measurements of Xe isotope ratios in ocean island basalts (OIB) suggest that Earth’s mantle accreted heterogeneously, and that compositional remnants of accretion are sampled by modern, high-3He/4He OIB associated with the Icelandic and Samoan plumes. If so, the high-3He/4He source may also have a distinct oxygen isotopic composition from the rest of the mantle. Here, we test if the major elements of the high-3He/4He source preserve any evidence of heterogeneous accretion using measurements of three oxygen isotopes on olivine from a variety of high-3He/4He OIB locations. To high precision, the Δ17O value of high-3He/4He olivines from Hawaii, Pitcairn, Baffin Island and Samoa, are indistinguishable from bulk mantle olivine (Δ17OBulk Mantle − Δ17OHigh 3He/4He olivine = −0.002 ± 0.004 (2 × SEM)‰). Thus, there is no resolvable oxygen isotope evidence for heterogeneous accretion in the high-3He/4He source. Modelling of mixing processes indicates that if an early-forming, oxygen-isotope distinct mantle did exist, either the anomaly was extremely small, or the anomaly was homogenised away by later mantle convection.
The δ18O values of olivine with the highest 3He/4He ratios from a variety of OIB locations have a relatively uniform composition (∼5‰). This composition is intermediate to values associated with the depleted MORB mantle and the average mantle. Similarly, δ18O values of olivine from high-3He/4He OIB correlate with radiogenic isotope ratios of He, Sr, and Nd. Combined, this suggests that magmatic oxygen is sourced from the same mantle as other, more incompatible elements and that the intermediate δ18O value is a feature of the high-3He/4He mantle source. The processes responsible for the δ18O signature of high-3He/4He mantle are not certain, but δ18O–87Sr/86Sr correlations indicate that it may be connected to a predominance of a HIMU-like (high U/Pb) component or other moderate δ18O components recycled into the high-3He/4He source
Complete sequence-based pathway analysis by differential on-chip DNA and RNA extraction from a single cell
Abstract We demonstrate on-chip, differential DNA and RNA extraction from a single cell using a microfluidic chip and a two-stage lysis protocol. This method enables direct use of the whole extract, without additional washing steps, reducing sample loss. Using this method, the tumor driving pathway in individual cells from a colorectal cancer cell line was determined by applying a Bayesian computational pathway model to sequences obtained from the RNA fraction of a single cell and, the mutations driving the pathway were determined by analyzing sequences obtained from the DNA fraction of the same single cell. This combined functional and mutational pathway assessment of a single cell could be of significant value for dissecting cellular heterogeneity in tumors and analyzing single circulating tumor cells
Experimental assignment of long range magnetic communication through Pd amp; Pt metallophilic contacts
Record breaking magnetic exchange interactions have previously been reported for 3d metal dimers of the form [M Pt SAc 4 pyNO2 ]2 M Ni or Co that are linked in the solid state via metallophilic Pt amp; 8943;Pt bridges. This contrasts the terminally capped monomers [M Pt SAc 4 py 2], for which neither metallophilic bridges nor magnetic exchange interactions are found. Computational modeling has shown that the magnetic exchange interaction is facilitated by the pseudo closed shell d8 amp; 8943;d8 metallophilic interaction between the filled Pt2 5dz2 orbitals. We present here inelastic neutron scattering experiments on these complexes, wherein the dimers present an oscillatory momentum transfer dependence of the magnetic transitions. This allows for the unequivocal experimental assignment of the distance between the coupled ions, which matches exactly the coupling pathway via the metallophilic bridges. Furthermore, we have synthesized and magnetically characterized the isostructural palladium analogues. The magnetic coupling across the Pd amp; 8943;Pd bridge is found through SQUID magnetometry and FD FT THz EPR spectroscopy to be much weaker than via the Pt amp; 8943;Pt bridge. The weaker coupling is traced to the larger radial extent of the 5dz2 orbitals compared to that of the 4dz2 orbitals. The existence of a palladium metallophilic interaction is evaluated computationally from potential surface cuts along the metal stretching direction. Similar behavior is found for the Pd amp; 8943;Pd and Pt amp; 8943;Pt systems with clear minima along this coordinate and provide estimates for the force constant for this distortion. The estimated M amp; 8943;M stretching frequencies are found to match experimental observed, polarized bands in single crystal Raman spectra close to 45 cm amp; 8722;1. This substantiates the existence of energetically relevant Pd amp; 8943;Pd metallophilic interactions. The unique properties of both Pt2 and Pd2 constitutes an orthogonal reactivity, which can be utilized for steering both the direction and strength of magnetic interaction
Observation of Scaling Violations in Scaled Momentum Distributions at HERA
Charged particle production has been measured in deep inelastic scattering
(DIS) events over a large range of and using the ZEUS detector. The
evolution of the scaled momentum, , with in the range 10 to 1280
, has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit
frame. The results show clear evidence, in a single experiment, for scaling

D* Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
This paper presents measurements of D^{*\pm} production in deep inelastic
scattering from collisions between 27.5 GeV positrons and 820 GeV protons. The
data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel
(+ c.c.) has been used in the study. The
cross section for inclusive D^{*\pm} production with
and is 5.3 \pms 1.0 \pms 0.8 nb in the kinematic region
{ GeV and }. Differential cross
sections as functions of p_T(D^{*\pm}), and are
compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on the photon-gluon
fusion production mechanism. After an extrapolation of the cross section to the
full kinematic region in p_T(D^{*\pm}) and (D^{*\pm}), the charm
contribution to the proton structure function is

On the Discriminating Power of Testing Equivalences for Reactive Probabilistic Systems: Results and Open Problems
International audienceTesting equivalences have been deeply investigated on fully nondeterministic processes, as well as on processes featuring probabilities and internal nondeterminism. This is not the case with reactive probabilistic processes, for which it is only known that the discriminating power of probabilistic bisimilarity is achieved when admitting a copying capability within tests. In this paper, we introduce for reactive probabilistic processes three testing equivalences without copying, which are respectively based on reactive probabilistic tests, fully nondeterministic tests, and nondeterministic and probabilistic tests. We show that the three testing equivalences are strictly finer than probabilistic failure-trace equivalence, and that the one based on nondeterministic and probabilistic tests is strictly finer than the other two, which are incomparable with each other. Moreover, we provide a number of facts that lead us to conjecture that (i) may testing and must testing coincide on reactive probabilistic processes and (ii) nondeterministic and probabilistic tests reach the same discriminating power as probabilistic bisimilarity
