Eternity and the cosmological constant
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the stability of interacting matter
in the presence of a cosmological constant. Using an approach based on the heat
equation, no imaginary part is found for the effective potential in the
presence of a fixed background, which is the n-dimensional sphere or else an

This annual report is prepared pursuant to the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPs) 40 CFR Part 61, Subpart H; Subpart H governs radionuclide emissions to air from Department of Energy (DOE) facilities. NESHAPs limits the emission of radionuclides to the ambient air from DOE facilities to levels resulting in an annual effective dose equivalent (EDE) of 10 mrem (100 {micro}Sv) to any member of the public. The EDEs for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) site-wide maximally exposed members of the public from 1999 operations are summarized
Scaling Rule for Nonperturbative Radiation in a Class of Event Shapes
We discuss nonperturbative radiation for a recently introduced class of
infrared safe event shape weights, which describe the narrow-jet limit.
Starting from next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) resummation, we derive an
approximate scaling rule that relates the nonperturbative shape functions for
these weights to the shape function for the thrust. We argue that the scaling
reflects the boost invariance implicit in NLL resummation, and discuss its
limitations. In the absence of data analysis for the new event shapes, we

Event Shape/Energy Flow Correlations
We introduce a set of correlations between energy flow and event shapes that
are sensitive to the flow of color at short distances in jet events. These
correlations are formulated for a general set of event shapes, which includes
jet broadening and thrust as special cases. We illustrate the method for
electron-positron annihilation dijet events, and calculate the correlation at
leading logarithm in the energy flow and at next-to-leading-logarithm in the

Superconducting correlations in metallic nanoparticles: exact solution of the BCS model by the algebraic Bethe ansatz
Superconducting pairing of electrons in nanoscale metallic particles with
discrete energy levels and a fixed number of electrons is described by the
reduced BCS model Hamiltonian. We show that this model is integrable by the
algebraic Bethe ansatz. The eigenstates, spectrum, conserved operators,
integrals of motion, and norms of wave functions are obtained. Furthermore, the
quantum inverse problem is solved, meaning that form factors and correlation
functions can be explicitly evaluated. Closed form expressions are given for

Fusion of secretory vesicles isolated from rat liver
Secretory vesicles isolated from rat liver were found to fuse after exposure to Ca2+. Vescle fusion is characterized by the occurrence of twinned vesicles with a continuous cleavage plane between two vesicles in freeze-fracture electron microscopy. The number of fused vesicles increases with increasing Ca2+-concentrations and is half maximal around 10â6 m. Other divalent cations (Ba2+, Sr2+, and Mg2+) were ineffective. Mg2+ inhibits Ca2+-induced fusion. Therefore, the fusion of secretory vesiclesin vitro is Ca2+ specific and exhibits properties similar to the exocytotic process of various secretory cells.
Various substances affecting secretionin vivo (microtubular inhibitors, local anethetics, ionophores) were tested for their effect on membrane fusion in our system.
The fusion of isolated secretory vesicles from liver was found to differ from that of pure phospholipid membranes in its temperature dependence, in its much lower requirement for Ca2+, and in its Ca2+-specificity. Chemical and enzymatic modifications of the vesicle membrane indicate that glycoproteins may account for these differences
IL-33 activates tumor stroma to promote intestinal polyposis
Tumor epithelial cells develop within a microenvironment consisting of extracellular matrix, growth factors, and cytokines produced by nonepithelial stromal cells. In response to paracrine signals from tumor epithelia, stromal cells modify the microenvironment to promote tumor growth and metastasis. Here, we identify interleukin 33 (IL-33) as a regulator of tumor stromal cell activation and mediator of intestinal polyposis. In human colorectal cancer, IL-33 expression was induced in the tumor epithelium of adenomas and carcinomas, and expression of the IL-33 receptor, IL1RL1 (also referred to as IL1-R4 or ST2), localized predominantly to the stroma of adenoma and both the stroma and epithelium of carcinoma. Genetic and antibody abrogation of responsiveness to IL-33 in the ApcMin/+ mouse model of intestinal tumorigenesis inhibited proliferation, induced apoptosis, and suppressed angiogenesis in adenomatous polyps, which reduced both tumor number and size. Similar to human adenomas, IL-33 expression localized to tumor epithelial cells and expression of IL1RL1 associated with two stromal cell types, subepithelial myofibroblasts and mast cells, in ApcMin/+ polyps. In vitro, IL-33 stimulation of human subepithelial myofibroblasts induced the expression of extracellular matrix components and growth factors associated with intestinal tumor progression. IL-33 deficiency reduced mast cell accumulation in ApcMin/+ polyps and suppressed the expression of mast cell-derived proteases and cytokines known to promote polyposis. Based on these findings, we propose that IL-33 derived from the tumor epithelium promotes polyposis through the coordinated activation of stromal cells and the formation of a protumorigenic microenvironment
