Interplay of fission modes in mass distribution of light actinide nuclei 225,227Pa
Fission-fragment mass distributions were measured for 225,227Pa nuclei formed
in fusion reactions of 19F + 206, 208Pb around fusion barrier energies.
Mass-angle correlations do not indicate any quasi-fission like events in this
bombarding energy range. Mass distributions were fitted by Gaussian
distribution and mass variance extracted. At below-barrier energies, the mass
variance was found to increase with decrease in energy for both nuclei. Results
from present work were compared with existing data for induced fission of 224,
226Th and 228U around barrier energies. Enhancement in mass variance of 225,
227Pa nuclei at below-barrier energies shows evidence for presence of
asymmetric fission events mixed with symmetric fission events. This is in
agreement with the results of mass distributions of nearby nuclei 224, 226Th
and 228U where two-mode fission process was observed. Two-mode feature of
fission arises due to the shell effects changing the landscape of the potential
energy surfaces at low excitation energies. The excitation-energy dependence of
the mass variance gives strong evidence for survival of microscopic shell
effects in fission of light actinide nuclei 225, 227Pa with initial excitation
energy ~30 - 50 MeV
A modular focal plane detector system for the heavy ion reaction analyzer at NSC, New Delhi
A detector system has been developed for the focal plane of the HIRA. It consists of two independent detectors, a low-pressure multiwire proportional counter (LP-MWPC) followed by a split-anode ionization detector. Details of the design and test results are presented. Using slow preamplifiers, the position resolution is ā„1 mm and the time resolution is estimated to be 1.5 ns for the LP-MWPC. The ionization detector gives 2.4% energy resolution for 150 MeV 28Si scattered off a gold target and the ĪZ/Z obtained for 28Si+27Al is 1/42 for Z=14. Some results for fusion and transfer studies for the 48Ti+58Ni and 28Si+68Zn systems, respectively, at energies around the Coulomb barrier, are presented to highlight the performance of the detector system
Astrophysical S_{17}(0) factor from a measurement of d(7Be,8B)n reaction at E_{c.m.} = 4.5 MeV
Angular distribution measurements of H(Be,Be)H and
H(Be,B) reactions at ~4.5 MeV were performed to
extract the astrophysical factor using the asymptotic normalization
coefficient (ANC) method. For this purpose a pure, low emittance Be beam
was separated from the primary Li beam by a recoil mass spectrometer
operated in a novel mode. A beam stopper at 0 allowed the use of a
higher Be beam intensity. Measurement of the elastic scattering in the
entrance channel using kinematic coincidence, facilitated the determination of
the optical model parameters needed for the analysis of the transfer data. The
present measurement significantly reduces errors in the extracted
Be(p,) cross section using the ANC method. We get

Transfer measurements for the Ti plus Ni systems at near barrier energies
Large enhancements have been observed in the sub-barrier fusion cross sections for Ti + Ni systems in our previous studies. Coupled channel calculations incorporating couplings to 2(+) and 3(-) states failed to explain these enhancements completely. A possibilty of transfer channels contributing to the residual enhancements had been suggested. In order to investigate the role of relevant transfer channels, measurements of one- and two-nucleon transfer were carried out for Ti-46,Ti-48 + Ni-64 systems. Regional inequalities in under-5 mortality in Nigeria: a population-based analysis of individual- and community-level determinants
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Regions with geographically diverse ecology and socioeconomic circumstances may have different disease exposures and child health outcomes. This study assessed variations in the risks of death in children under age 5 across regions of Nigeria and determined characteristics at the individual and community levels that explain possible variations among regions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Multilevel Cox proportional hazards analysis was performed using a nationally representative sample of 6,029 children from 2,735 mothers aged 15-49 years and nested within 365 communities from the 2003 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. Hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to express measures of association among the characteristics. Variance partition coefficients and Wald statistic were used to express measures of variation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Patterns of under-5 mortality cluster within families and communities. The risks of under-5 deaths were significantly higher for children of mothers residing in the South South (Niger Delta) region (HR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.76-2.20) and children of mothers residing in communities with a low proportion of mothers attending prenatal care by a doctor (HR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.15-1.86). In addition, the cross-level interaction between mothers' education and community prenatal care by a doctor was associated with a more than 40% higher risk of dying (HR: 1.41; 95% CI: 1.21-1.78).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The findings suggest the need to differentially focus on community-level interventions aimed at increasing maternal and child health care utilization and improving the socioeconomic position of mothers, especially in disadvantaged regions such as the South South (Niger Delta) region. Further studies on community-levels determinants of under-5 mortality are needed.</p
Sexually dimorphic characteristics of the small intestine and colon of prepubescent C57BL/6 mice
Background There is increasing appreciation for sexually dimorphic effects, but the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects are only partially understood. In the present study, we explored transcriptomics and epigenetic differences in the small intestine and colon of prepubescent male and female mice. In addition, the microbiota composition of the colonic luminal content has been examined. Methods At postnatal day 14, male and female C57BL/6 mice were sacrificed and the small intestine, colon and content of luminal colon were isolated. Gene expression of both segments of the intestine was analysed by microarray analysis. DNA methylation of the promoter regions of selected sexually dimorphic genes was examined by pyrosequencing. Composition of the microbiota was explored by deep sequencing. Results Sexually dimorphic genes were observed in both segments of the intestine of 2-week-old mouse pups, with a stronger effect in the small intestine. Amongst the total of 349 genes displaying a sexually dimorphic effect in the small intestine and/or colon, several candidates exhibited a previously established function in the intestine (i.e. Nts, Nucb2, Alox5ap and RetnlĪ³). In addition, differential expression of genes linked to intestinal bowel disease (i.e. Ccr3, Ccl11 and Tnfr) and colorectal cancer development (i.e. Wt1 and Mmp25) was observed between males and females. Amongst the genes displaying significant sexually dimorphic expression, nine genes were histone-modifying enzymes, suggesting that epigenetic mechanisms might be a potential underlying regulatory mechanism. However, our results reveal no significant changes in DNA methylation of analysed CpGs within the selected differentially expressed genes. With respect to the bacterial community composition in the colon, a dominant effect of litter origin was found but no significant sex effect was detected. However, a sex effect on the dominance of specific taxa was observed. Conclusions This study reveals molecular dissimilarities between males and females in the small intestine and colon of prepubescent mice, which might underlie differences in physiological functioning and in disease predisposition in the two sexes
