Proverbs are used as gateways to express the thoughts, living conditions and beliefs of the society. Proverbs also express the cultural elements. In that way in Vaishnava religious songs, especially in the hymns, Alwars have used proverbs to preach, moralize and rebuke indirectly. Thirumangai Alwar has used many proverbs. In particular, it is known that proverbs are used in the places where the mother sympathizes with the Lord (Kannan) in an attempt to connect the heroine (Parakala Nayaki). From Victimhood to Survivor-Hood: Reflections on Women’s Agency in Popular Films on Sex Trafficking in India
Crimes against women have increasingly been reported in news media, since the 2012 ‘Nirbhaya’ incident took place. Recently the number of ‘women-centric’ films is steadily increasing. The present paper focuses on three recent films- Naa Bangaaru Talli (2014), Mardaani (2014) and Lakshmi (2014), which engage with the issue of sex trafficking, to understand the depiction of women’s vulnerability and agency with respect to gender-based violence. Though the films portray sex trafficking and their related issues in a realistic manner, none of these films move on to portray the next phase of rehabilitation and reintegration of victims. I also explore the extent to which the films emphasize the importance of individual resilience versus social enabling factors for overcoming sex trafficking. Finally, the paper speculates on the potential impact of these films on viewers

Comparison of Seasonal Cycles of Phytoplankton Chlorophyll, Aerosols, Winds and Sea-Surface Temperature off Somalia
In climate research, an important task is to characterize the relationships between
Essential Climate Variables (ECVs). Here, satellite-derived data sets have been used to
examine the seasonal cycle of phytoplankton (chlorophyll concentration) in the waters
off Somalia, and its relationship to aerosols, winds and Sea Surface Temperature
(SST). Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration, Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT), Ångström
Exponent (AE), Dust Optical Thickness (DOT), SST and sea-surface wind data for a
16-year period were assembled from various sources. The data were used to explore
whether there is evidence to show that dust aerosols enhance Chl-a concentration in
the study area. The Cross Correlation Function (CCF) showed highest positive correlation
(r2 = 0.3) in the western Arabian Sea when AOT led Chl-a by 1–2 time steps (here, 1
time step is 8 days). A 2 × 2◦ box off Somalia was selected for further investigations.
The correlations of alongshore wind speed, Ekman Mass Transport (EMT) and SST
with Chl-a were higher than that of AOT, for a lag of 8 days. When all four variables
were considered together in a multiple linear regression, the increase in r2 associated
with the AOT is only about 0.02, a consequence of covariance among AOT, SST,
EMT and alongshore wind speed. The AOT data show presence of dust aerosols
most frequently during the summer monsoon season (June–September). When the
analyses were repeated for the dust aerosol events, the correlations were generally
lower, but still significant. Again, the inclusion of DOT in the multiple linear regression
increased the correlation coefficient by only 2%, indicating minor enhancement in
Chl-a concentration. Interestingly, during summer monsoon season, there is a higher
probability of finding more instances of positive changes in Chl-a after one time step,
regardless of whether there is dust aerosol or not. On the other hand, during the
winter monsoon season (November–December) and rest of the year, the probability
of Chl-a enhancement is higher when dust aerosol is present than when it is absent.
The phase relationship in the 8-day climatologies of Chl-a and AOT (derived from
NASA’s SeaWiFS and MODIS-A ocean colour processing chain) showed that AOTled Chl-a for most of the summer monsoon season, except when Chl-a was very high,
during which time, Chl-a led AOT. The phase shift in the Chl-a and AOT climatological
relationship at the Chl-a peak was not observed when AOT from Aerosol Climate Change
Initiative (Aerosol-CCI) was used
Secondary Metabolic Gene Cluster Silencing in Aspergillus Nidulans
In contrast to most primary metabolism genes, the genes involved in secondary metabolism and certain nutrient utilization pathways are clustered in fungi. Recently a nuclear protein, LaeA, was found to be required for the transcription of several secondary metabolite gene clusters in Aspergillus nidulans. Here we show that LaeA regulation does not extend to nutrient utilization or the spoC1 sporulation clusters. One of the secondary metabolite clusters regulated by LaeA contains the positive regulatory (i.e. aflR) and biosynthetic genes required for biosynthesis of sterigmatocystin (ST), a carcinogenic toxin. Analysis of ST gene cluster expression indicates LaeA regulation of the cluster is location specific as transcription of genes bordering the ST cluster are unaffected in a ΔlaeA mutant and placement of a primary metabolic gene, argB, in the ST cluster resulted in argB silencing in the ΔlaeA background. ST cluster gene expression was remediated when an additional copy of aflR was placed outside of the cluster but not when placed in the cluster. Site-specific mutation of an s-adenosyl methionine (AdoMet) binding site in LaeA generated a ΔlaeA phenotype suggesting the protein to be a methyltransferase
HEMICHOREA: AN UNUSUAL MANIFESTATION OF THYROTOXICOSIS
ABSTRACTChorea is usually associated with neurological diseases. However, it can also be seen in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumaticfever (Sydenham's chorea), polycythemia vera, and thyrotoxicosis. Here, we report an interesting case of hemichorea in a 32-year-old lady, whopresented with acute onset of jerky, non-repetitive involuntary movements of the left upper and lower limbs. After detailed evaluation, she was foundto have thyrotoxicosis. Thyroid Tc-scan showed diffuse uptake suggesting Grave's disease. A magnetic resonance imaging of the brain was normal.Other causes of chorea like SLE and rheumatic fever were excluded. She was started on carbimazole. On follow-up after 6 weeks of therapy, there wasthe complete disappearance of chorea, and her thyroid hormone levels were normal.Keywords: Extrapyramidal syndrome, Hyperthyroidism, Corpus striatum, Dancing movements
Serine protease from Indian Cobra venom: its anticoagulant property and effect on human fibrinogen
An unusual low molecular weight serine protease (NnP28) has been purified from Indian Cobra (Naja naja) venom from the western region of the Indian sub-continent. We reported the purification and characterization of low molecular NnP28, emphasizing its role on human fibrinogen and anticoagulant property. NnP28 was purified using gel filtration column chromatography followed by ion exchange chromatography. Protein gel electrophoresis revealed its molecular weight approximate to 28 kDa. The exact molecular mass of NnP28 was found to be 27.12 kDa by mass spectrometry, hydrolyzing casein specifically, inhibited by PMSF suggesting it has a serine protease. NnP28 prolonged the clotting time of re-calcified human citrated plasma and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) exhibiting anticoagulant property. NnP28 exhibited fibrinogenolytic activity. Thus, the present study demonstrates the presence of unusual low molecular weight serine protease, emphasizing its importance of region-specific Indian cobra species
Free volume study of poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene) using positron annihilation spectroscopy as a microanalytical tool
Positron lifetimes and X-ray diffraction measurements were carried out on poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene) films annealed between 25 and 215 degrees C. The positron lifetime results were used to determine the free volume and XRD data were used to determine the apparent crystallite size and crystallinity. The glass transition temperature (T-g) of 52 degrees C obtained from positron results is in agreement with that obtained by thermal analysis. The average free volume cell size is 74 Angstrom(3) in films annealed below T-g, and increases to 84 Angstrom(3) in samples annealed above T-g. Although the observed changes in positron lifetime parameters as a function of annealing temperature are small, they are significant for the kind of material investigated. Our observations are explained in terms of thermally activated chain mobility, local relaxations and long-range motions. We further estimate, for the first time, the activation energies in the amorphous and crystalline regions of the polymer using the Goldanskii kinetic relations.
