Can an odd number of fermions be created due to chiral anomaly?
We describe a possibility of creation of an odd number of fractionally
charged fermions in 1+1 dimensional Abelian Higgs model. We point out that for
1+1 dimensions this process does not violate any symmetries of the theory, nor
makes it mathematically inconsistent. We construct the proper definition of the
fermionic determinant in this model and underline its non-trivial features that
are of importance for realistic 3+1 dimensional models with fermion number

The Effectiveness of Local Hypothermia and Peritoneal Lavage-Dialysis in the Treatment of Patients with Acute Destructive Pancreatitis
The aim of this study was to improve the principles of the pathogenetic therapy of acute pancreatitis and assess the effectiveness of local hypothermia of the pancreas, as well as peritoneal lavage-dialysis in the treatment of acute destructive pancreatitis. A total of 5889 patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) were examined. The leading role played by the lesions of the pancreatic lymphatic system in the development of destructive processes was noted. In experiments done on eight dogs, the first day of experimental acute pancreatitis showed necrosis of the lumbar retroperitoneal lymph nodes with a violation of lymph drainage from the pancreas before the retroperitoneal fat necrosis was initiated. The effectiveness of local hypothermia of the pancreas was experimentally demonstrated. In 32 patients with AP, the perioperative local hypothermia of the pancreas for 20-25 minutes was followed by the reduction of the alpha-amylase activity in the peripheral blood and in the portal system, as well as a significant reduction in the edema of the pancreas, that delayed the progression of the destructive lesions. Non-topological gravitating defects in five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space
A class of five-dimensional warped solutions is presented. The geometry is
everywhere regular and tends to five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space for large
absolute values of the bulk coordinate. The physical features of the solutions
change depending on the value of an integer parameter. In particular, a set of
solutions describes generalized gravitating kinks where the scalar field
interpolates between two different minima of the potential. The other category
of solutions describes instead gravitating defects where the scalar profile is
always finite and reaches the same constant asymptote both for positive and
negative values of the bulk coordinate. In this sense the profiles are

Long-range magnetic fields in the ground state of the Standard Model plasma
In thermal equilibrium the ground state of the plasma of Standard Model
particles is determined by temperature and exactly conserved combinations of
baryon and lepton numbers. We show that at non-zero values of the global
charges a translation invariant and homogeneous state of the plasma becomes
unstable and the system transits into a new state, containing a large-scale
magnetic field. The origin of this effect is the parity-breaking character of
weak interactions and chiral anomaly. This situation can occur in the early
