    qq-Trinomial identities

We obtain connection coefficients between qq-binomial and qq-trinomial coefficients. Using these, one can transform qq-binomial identities into a qq-trinomial identities and back again. To demonstrate the usefulness of this procedure we rederive some known trinomial identities related to partition theory and prove many of the conjectures of Berkovich, McCoy and Pearce, which have recently arisen in their study of the Ï•2,1\phi_{2,1} and Ï•1,5\phi_{1,5} perturbations of minimal conformal field theory.Comment: 21 pages, AMSLate

Modelling the hepatitis B vaccination programme in prisons

    Get PDF
A vaccination programme offering hepatitis B (HBV) vaccine at reception into prison has been introduced into selected prisons in England and Wales. Over the coming years it is anticipated this vaccination programme will be extended. A model has been developed to assess the potential impact of the programme on the vaccination coverage of prisoners, ex-prisoners, and injecting drug users (IDUs). Under a range of coverage scenarios, the model predicts the change over time in the vaccination status of new entrants to prison, current prisoners and IDUs in the community. The model predicts that at baseline in 2012 57% of the IDU population will be vaccinated with up to 72% being vaccinated depending on the vaccination scenario implemented. These results are sensitive to the size of the IDU population in England and Wales and the average time served by an IDU during each prison visit. IDUs that do not receive HBV vaccine in the community are at increased risk from HBV infection. The HBV vaccination programme in prisons is an effective way of vaccinating this hard-to-reach population although vaccination coverage on prison reception must be increased to achieve this

Population Genetic Structuring in Opisthorchis viverrini over Various Spatial Scales in Thailand and Lao PDR

Khon Kaen Province in northeast Thailand is known as a hot spot for opisthorchiasis in Southeast Asia. Preliminary allozyme and mitochondrial DNA haplotype data from within one endemic district in this Province (Ban Phai), indicated substantial genetic variability within Opisthorchis viverrini. Here, we used microsatellite DNA analyses to examine the genetic diversity and population structure of O. viverrini from four geographically close localities in Khon Kaen Province. Genotyping based on 12 microsatellite loci yielded a mean number of alleles per locus that ranged from 2.83 to 3.7 with an expected heterozygosity in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium of 0.44-0.56. Assessment of population structure by pairwise F(ST) analysis showed inter-population differentiation (P<0.05) which indicates population substructuring between these localities. Unique alleles were found in three of four localities with the highest number observed per locality being three. Our results highlight the existence of genetic diversity and population substructuring in O. viverrini over a small spatial scale which is similar to that found at a larger scale. This provides the basis for the investigation of the role of parasite genetic diversity and differentiation in transmission dynamics and control of O. viverrini

Energy Potential of Cattails (Typha spp.) and Productivity in Managed Stands

    Get PDF
Because of their high productivity in both natural and managed stands, cattails are being considered as a potential energy crop . Yields of 40 tons per hectare, including above and below ground biomass, have been reported (Moss et al., 1977). Yields from plants grown in managed paddies on peat are generally 20-30 percent lower. The maximum shoot weight occurs in August while maximum below ground biomass is reached in October. Total biomass increased with increasing rates of fertilizer application but differences were not significant. Differences between the initial nutrient contents of the two peat types used were more important than fertilizer levels. Significant differences in yield were obtained by increasing the planting rate from 12 to 48 rhizomes per plot. Further studies on natural stands are under way at the Carlos Avery Wildlife Area

Sound Propagation in Elongated Bose-Einstein Condensed Clouds

We consider propagation of sound pulses along the long axis of a Bose-Einstein condensed cloud in a very anisotropic trap. In the linear regime, we demonstrate that the square of the velocity of propagation is given by the square of the local sound velocity, c2=nU0/mc^2=nU_0/m, averaged over the cross section of the cloud. We also carry out calculations in the nonlinear regime, and determine how the speed of the pulse depends on its amplitude.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 3 eps figure
