Integrating Spirituality and Medical Education: What Students and Teachers Have to Say - A Qualitative Study
Aims
This thesis explored the perceptions of medical students and teachers with regards to spirituality, its role in health care, and its integration into medical education.
Methods
Two studies were conducted using qualitative descriptive thematic analysis: the first using focus groups with students; and the second depth interviews with teachers. Both studies were carried out in Francophone Canada.
Findings
Teachers spoke of a concept of spirituality evolving as a journey, while students reported sudden turning-points. Both regarded spirituality as important to patient care. Students were struggling with their future physician role and their commitment to rationality, whereas teachers emphasized the central role of the patient-doctor relationship in healing. Spirituality was perceived as a taboo topic in medical circles. Barriers and facilitators for integrating spirituality in medical curricula were identified.
Conclusion
Both groups made recommendations for earlier exposure to patients and increased physician mentorship. A holistic and integrated approach to medical education is required

Intra- and Extra-articular Features of Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis in the Cat (Felis catus).
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is an uncommon clinical entity in human and veterinary medicine. However, the condition is severely debilitating and is life-limiting if not treated. This study sought to characterize the intra- and extra-articular features of naturally occurring TMJ ankylosis in cats. TMJs from client-owned cats (n = 5) that underwent bilateral TMJ gap arthroplasty were examined and compared with TMJs from healthy, age-matched feline cadavers (n = 2) by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), micro-computed tomography (μCT) and histologically. Features of bilateral intra- and extra-articular ankylosis compounded by degenerative joint lesions were identified radiographically and histologically in all affected cats. Features of TMJ 'true' ankylosis included variable intracapsular fibro-osseous bridging, degeneration of the disc and the articular surfaces, narrowing of the joint space and flattening of the condylar process of the mandible. Extra-articular features of TMJ ankylosis included periarticular bone formation and fibro-osseous bridging between the mandible, zygomatic arch and coronoid process. In addition, subchondral bone loss or sclerosis, irregular and altered joint contours and irregularly increased density of the medullary bone characterized the degenerative changes of the osseous components of the TMJ. Complex radiological and histological features of both ankylosis and pseudoankylosis were identified that clinically manifested in complete inability to open the mouth
Mental health, intimate partner violence and HIV
Intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV are intersecting epidemics in South Africa (SA). Despite recognition that IPV and HIV are bidirectionally linked, less attention has been given to mental health – a key health condition that is at the nexus of both violence and HIV/AIDS. While SA healthcare professionals have made great strides in treating HIV, the corresponding conditions of IPV and mental health receive far less clinical care. Treating mental health has the potential to positively effect HIV care and treatment, but is also a powerful gateway to enhanced comprehensive health in patients. Improving skills in managing the mental health of patients will lead to better health for them and quality of life for affected families. It can also assist health systems to deal more effectively with complex cases that so rarely achieve positive health outcomes
Topology of the three-qubit space of entanglement types
The three-qubit space of entanglement types is the orbit space of the local
unitary action on the space of three-qubit pure states, and hence describes the
types of entanglement that a system of three qubits can achieve. We show that
this orbit space is homeomorphic to a certain subspace of R^6, which we
describe completely. We give a topologically based classification of
three-qubit entanglement types, and we argue that the nontrivial topology of
the three-qubit space of entanglement types forbids the existence of standard

On the Expansions in Spin Foam Cosmology
We discuss the expansions used in spin foam cosmology. We point out that
already at the one vertex level arbitrarily complicated amplitudes contribute,
and discuss the geometric asymptotics of the five simplest ones. We discuss
what type of consistency conditions would be required to control the expansion.
We show that the factorisation of the amplitude originally considered is best
interpreted in topological terms. We then consider the next higher term in the
graph expansion. We demonstrate the tension between the truncation to small
graphs and going to the homogeneous sector, and conclude that it is necessary
