To Act Or Not To Act: Will New York\u27s Defeated Death Penalty Be Resurrected?

    Get PDF
Capital punishment has always been a topic of controversy in the United States. The debate about the death penalty, its value as a way to permanently incapacitate society\u27s most dangerous criminals and its effectiveness as a deterrent to violent crime, has increased. This phenomenon is particularly visible in New York State, where, in 2004, the New York Court of Appeals struck down the State\u27s death penalty statute as invalid under the New York Constitution. This Note describes the evolution of New York\u27s 1995 death penalty statute, analyzing the way in which the state legislature could respond to the statute\u27s unconstitutionality, and recommends that the legislature end the current debate over the future of capital punishment in New York by abolishing the death penalty. Part I describes the evolution of death penalty legislation at the federal level and within New York State. Part I further discusses the legislative reaction to the statute\u27s invalidation and describes the current debate in New York about the continued desirability of capital punishment. Part II presents the legislative alternatives of either amending or abolishing New York\u27s death penalty statute and discusses the arguments for and against each option. Finally, Part III argues that despite the challenges involved in either amending and reinstating the death penalty or abolishing it, the legislature should not allow the statute simply to remain inoperable by fault. This note concludes that given the need for action, the State Legislature should move to abolish the death penalty in New York

Endogenous Fibrinolysis : An Important Mediator of Thrombus Formation and Cardiovascular Risk

    Get PDF
© 2015 BY THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF CARDIOLOGY FOUNDATION. PUBLISHED BY ELSEVIER INC.Most acute cardiovascular events are attributable to arterial thrombosis. Plaque rupture or erosion stimulates platelet activation, aggregation, and thrombosis, whilst simultaneously activating enzymatic processes that mediate endogenous fibrinolysis to physiologically maintain vessel patency. Interplay between these pathways determines clinical outcome. If proaggregatory factors predominate, the thrombus may propagate, leading to vessel occlusion. However, if balanced by a healthy fibrinolytic system, thrombosis may not occur or cause lasting occlusion. Despite abundant evidence for the fibrinolytic system regulating thrombosis, it has been overlooked compared with platelet reactivity, partly due to a lack of techniques to measure it. We evaluate evidence for endogenous fibrinolysis in arterial thrombosis and review techniques to assess it, including biomarkers and global assays, such as thromboelastography and the Global Thrombosis Test. Global assays, simultaneously assessing proaggregatory and fibrinolytic pathways, could play a role in risk stratification and in identifying impaired fibrinolysis as a potential target for pharmacological modulation.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

Inclusive workplaces : a review and model

    Get PDF
Organizations continue to be challenged and enriched by the diversity of their workforces. Scholars are increasingly focusing on inclusion to enhance work environments by offering support for a diverse workforce. This article reviews and synthesizes the inclusion literature and provides a model of inclusion that integrates existing literature to offer greater clarity, as well as suggestions for moving the literature forward. We review the inclusion literature consisting of the various foci (work group, organization, leader, organizational practices, and climate) and associated definitions and how it has developed. We then describe themes in the inclusion literature and propose a model of inclusion. Finally, we end by discussing theoretical and practical implications

A Guidebook on How to Be Students in an American University for Students of Alfalink Overseas Study and English Course

In the internship program, I worked at West Alfalink which is located at Ruko Rich Palace kav. I-1 Jl. MayjenSungkono 149-151. Alfalink is an overseas education consultant / agent and English language center. In this company, I found three problems. One of them is no guidebook for students who choose the USA to do their overseas study. By looking at this condition, I decided to make the USA guidebook for Alfalink's students. It can be an effective tool for the company to give detailed information for the students. By providing this guidebook, Alfalink and students can get a lot of benefits. First, Alfalink's staff do not need to give long explanation to the students and to new staff. Second, Alfalink can use it as a promotional tool. Last, students can get complete information about the USA

Strategies for wheat stripe rust pathogenicity identified by transcriptome sequencing

    Get PDF
Stripe rust caused by the fungus Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici (Pst) is a major constraint to wheat production worldwide. The molecular events that underlie Pst pathogenicity are largely unknown. Like all rusts, Pst creates a specialized cellular structure within host cells called the haustorium to obtain nutrients from wheat, and to secrete pathogenicity factors called effector proteins. We purified Pst haustoria and used next-generation sequencing platforms to assemble the haustorial transcriptome as well as the transcriptome of germinated spores. 12,282 transcripts were assembled from 454-pyrosequencing data and used as reference for digital gene expression analysis to compare the germinated uredinospores and haustoria transcriptomes based on Illumina RNAseq data. More than 400 genes encoding secreted proteins which constitute candidate effectors were identified from the haustorial transcriptome, with two thirds of these up-regulated in this tissue compared to germinated spores. RT-PCR analysis confirmed the expression patterns of 94 effector candidates. The analysis also revealed that spores rely mainly on stored energy reserves for growth and development, while haustoria take up host nutrients for massive energy production for biosynthetic pathways and the ultimate production of spores. Together, these studies substantially increase our knowledge of potential Pst effectors and provide new insights into the pathogenic strategies of this important organism.J.P.R. is an ARC Future Fellow (FT0992129). A Phenomenological Inquiry into an Autistic Adolescent\u27s Experience in Relationship-based Music Therapy from the Perspectives of the Adolescent and Parent

    Get PDF
This study explored the essence of relationship-based music therapy through the lens of an autistic adolescent and their parent. Though previous research examines this phenomenon through a parent’s perspective (Corcoran et al., 2015; Thompson & McFerran, 2015; Sorel, 2010, 2004; Warren & Nugent, 2010), the present study supports the neurodiversity paradigm shift through providing opportunities for an autistic participant to speak on his experience. The data sources included two interviews, adolescent and parent, as well as indexes of the music therapy session. A thematic analysis was conducted through collecting and analyzing all data sets. Themes were developed and musical descriptions were used to construct meaning and comprehensively explore the lived experience of the autistic individual in relationship-based music therapy. Themes were constructed for the adolescent, the parent, and then data was synthesized to create collective themes. The findings yielded themes for the adolescent: a) “I can be me!” b) a range of musical-emotional experiences, and c) significant relationships. Themes for the parent included: a) being himself, b) reciprocity and the relationship, and b) growth. The corroborated themes were a) freedom of self, relating to the themes, “I can be me!” and being himself; b) forging meaningful relationships; and c) pride. Relationship-based music therapy is supported by the findings through determining the significance of relationship-based strategies and philosophies to the autistic’s sense of self and experience

Interactive Nutrition Curriculum for College Students

    Get PDF
The demand for nutrition services has increased in the past year at Georgia State University. Group classes would be an efficient way to educate larger groups of students at once rather than providing one on one attention, which requires more employees. This interactive nutrition curriculum is informed by best practices shown in the literature and student interests. Six modules rooted in social cognitive theory have been developed to increase knowledge and improve self-efficacy and behavioral capability for healthy eating patterns among college students at Georgia State. The curriculum promotes reflection and personalized goal setting with the intention of advancing students through the stages of change model. Topics include MyPlate guidelines, how to eat healthy on a budget, meal planning, label reading, healthy dining-out options, and basic cooking skills. The use of this curriculum has great potential to enhance the existing services of the GSU Counseling Center, add value to PantherDining, and meet the needs of students
