A simple solution of sound transmission through an elastic wall to a rectangular enclosure, including wall damping and air viscosity effects
A simple solution to the problem of the acoustical coupling between a rectangular structure, its air content, and an external noise source is presented. This solution is a mathematical expression for the normalized acoustic pressure inside the structure. Numerical results for the sound-pressure response for a specified set of parameters are also presented
Making vortices in dipolar spinor condensates via rapid adiabatic passage
We propose to the create vortices in spin-1 condensates via magnetic
dipole-dipole interaction. Starting with a polarized condensate prepared under
large axial magnetic field, we show that by gradually inverting the field,
population transfer among different spin states can be realized in a controlled
manner. Under optimal condition, we generate a doubly quantized vortex state
containing nearly all atoms in the condensate. The resulting vortex state is a
direct manifestation of the dipole-dipole interaction and spin textures in
spinor condensates. We also point out that the whole process can be
qualitatively described by a simple rapid adiabatic passage model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Generating entangled photon pairs from a cavity-QED system
We propose a scheme for the controlled generation of Einstein-Podosky-Rosen
(EPR) entangled photon pairs from an atom coupled to a high Q optical cavity,
extending the prototype system as a source for deterministic single photons. A
thorough theoretical analysis confirms the promising operating conditions of
our scheme as afforded by currently available experimental setups. Our result
demonstrates the cavity QED system as an efficient and effective source for
entangled photon pairs, and shines new light on its important role in quantum
information science.Comment: It has recently come to our attention that the experiment by T. Wilk,
S. C. Webster, A. Kuhn and G. Rempe, published in Science 317, 488 (2007),
exactly realizes what we proposed in this article, which is published in Phy.

Magnetization reversal in Kagome artificial spin ice studied by first-order reversal curves
Magnetization reversal of interconnected Kagome artificial spin ice was
studied by the first-order reversal curve (FORC) technique based on the
magneto-optical Kerr effect and magnetoresistance measurements. The
magnetization reversal exhibits a distinct six-fold symmetry with the external
field orientation. When the field is parallel to one of the nano-bar branches,
the domain nucleation/propagation and annihilation processes sensitively depend
on the field cycling history and the maximum field applied. When the field is
nearly perpendicular to one of the branches, the FORC measurement reveals the
magnetic interaction between the Dirac strings and orthogonal branches during
the magnetization reversal process. Our results demonstrate that the FORC
approach provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the magnetic
interaction in the magnetization reversal processes of spin-frustrated systems
Inherent Mach-Zehnder interference with "which-way" detection for single particle scattering in one dimension
We study the coherent transport of single photon in a one-dimensional
coupled-resonator-array, "non-locally" coupled to a two-level system. Since its
inherent structure is a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we explain the destructive
interference phenomenon of the transmission spectrums according to the effect
of which-way detection. The quantum realization of the present model is a
nano-electromechanical resonator arrays with two nearest resonators coupled to
a single spin via their attached magnetic tips. Its classical simulation is a
waveguide of coupled defected cavity array with double couplings to a side
defected cavity.Comment: 5 papges, 4 figure
Large single crystal growth of BaFe1.87Co0.13As2 using a nucleation pole
Co-doped iron arsenic single crystal of BaFe1.87Co0.13As2 with dimension up
to 20 x 10 x 2 mm3 were grown by a nucleation pole: an alumina stick served as
nucleation center during growth. The high quality of crystalline was
illustrated by the measurements of neutron rocking curve and X-ray diffraction
pattern. A very sharp superconducting transition temperature Tc~25 K was
revealed by both resistivity and susceptibility measurements. A nearly 100%
shielding fraction and bulk nature of the superconductivity for the single
crystal were confirmed using magnetic susceptibility data.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Interactive and Iterative Discovery of Entity Network Subgraphs
Graph mining to extract interesting components has been studied in various guises, e.g., communities, dense subgraphs, cliques. However, most existing works are based on notions of frequency and connectivity and do not capture subjective interestingness from a user's viewpoint. Furthermore, existing approaches to mine graphs are not interactive and cannot incorporate user feedbacks in any natural manner. In this paper, we address these gaps by proposing a graph maximum entropy model to discover surprising connected subgraph patterns from entity graphs. This model is embedded in an interactive visualization framework to enable human-in-the-loop, model-guided data exploration. Using case studies on real datasets, we demonstrate how interactions between users and the maximum entropy model lead to faster and explainable conclusions
A detailed study of quasinormal frequencies of the Kerr black hole
We compute the quasinormal frequencies of the Kerr black hole using a
continued fraction method. The continued fraction method first proposed by
Leaver is still the only known method stable and accurate for the numerical
determination of the Kerr quasinormal frequencies. We numerically obtain not
only the slowly but also the rapidly damped quasinormal frequencies and analyze
the peculiar behavior of these frequencies at the Kerr limit. We also calculate
the algebraically special frequency first identified by Chandrasekhar and
confirm that it coincide with the quasinormal frequency only at the
Schwarzschild limit.Comment: REVTEX, 15 pages, 7 eps figure
