    Evaluating Multipulse Integration as a Neural-Health Correlate in Human Cochlear-Implant Users: Relationship to Psychometric Functions for Detection

    In electrical hearing, multipulse integration (MPI) describes the rate at which detection threshold decreases with increasing stimulation rate in a fixed-duration pulse train. In human subjects, MPI has been shown to be dependent on the psycho- physically estimated spread of neural excitation at a high stimulation rate, with broader spread predicting greater integration. The first aim of the present study was to replicate this finding using alternative methods for measuring MPI and spread of neural excitation. The second aim was to test the hypothesis that MPI is related to the slope of the psychometric function for detection. Specifically, a steep d’ versus stimulus level function would predict shallow MPI since the amount of current reduction necessary to compensate for an increase in stimulation rate to maintain threshold would be small. The MPI function was measured by obtaining adaptive detection thresholds at 160 and 640 pulses per second. Spread of neural excitation was measured by forward-masked psychophysical tuning curves. All psychophysical testing was performed in a monopolar stimulation mode (MP 1 þ 2). Results showed that MPI was correlated with the slopes of the tuning curves, with broader tuning predicting steeper MPI, confirming the earlier finding. However, there was no relationship between MPI and the slopes of the psychometric functions. These results suggest that a broad stimulation of the cochlea facilitates MPI. MPI however is not related to the estimated neural excitation growth with current level near the behavioral threshold, at least in monopolar stimulation

    Children view own-age faces qualitatively differently to other-age faces

The present study employed a recognition paradigm with eye-tracking in order to assess whether participants actively viewed faces of their own-age differently to that of other-age faces. The results indicated a significant OAB (superior recognition for own-age relative to other-age faces), provided that they were upright, indicative of expertise being employed for the recognition of own-age faces. However, the eye-tracking results indicate that viewing other-age faces was qualitatively different to the viewing of own-age faces, with more nose fixations for other-age faces. These results are interpreted as supporting the socio-cognitive model of the OAB

    100 Unintended consequences of policies to improve the energy efficiency of the UK housing stock

    As a major sector contributing to the UK’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, housing is an important focus of government policies to mitigate climate change. Current policy promotes the application of a variety of energy efficiency measures to a diverse building stock, which will likely lead to a wide range of unintended consequences. We have undertaken a scoping review identifying more than 100 unin- tended consequences impacting building fabric, population health and the environment, thus high- lighting the urgent need for government and society to reconsider its approach. Many impacts are connected in complex relationships. Some are negative, others possibly co-benefits for other object- ives. While there are likely to be unavoidable trade-offs between different domains affected and the emissions reduction policy, a more integrated approach to decision making could ensure co-benefits are optimised, negative impacts reduced and trade-offs are dealt with explicitly. Integrative methods can capture this complexity and support a dynamic understanding of the effects of policies over time, bringing together different kinds of knowledge in an improved decision-making process. We suggest that participatory systems dynamics with multi/inter-disciplinary stakeholders is likely to offer a useful route forward, supporting cross-sectorial policy optimisation that places reducing housing GHG emis- sions alongside other housing policy goals

    Prevalence of face recognition deficits in middle childhood

    Approximately 2-2.5% of the adult population is believed to show severe difficulties with face recognition, in the absence of any neurological injury – a condition known as developmental prosopagnosia (DP). However, to date no research has attempted to estimate the prevalence of face recognition deficits in children, possibly because there are very few child-friendly, well-validated tests of face recognition. In the current study, we examined face and object recognition in a group of primary school children (aged 5-11 years), to establish whether our tests were suitable for children; and to provide an estimate of face recognition difficulties in children. In Experiment 1 (n = 184), children completed a pre-existing test of child face memory, the CFMT-K, and a bicycle test with the same format. In Experiment 2 (n = 413), children completed three-alternative forced choice matching tasks with faces and bicycles. All tests showed good psychometric properties. The face and bicycle tests were well-matched for difficulty and showed a similar developmental trajectory. Neither the memory nor matching tests were suitable to detect impairments in the youngest groups of children, but both tests appear suitable to screen for face recognition problems in middle childhood. In the current sample, 1.2-5.2% of children showed difficulties with face recognition; 1.2-4% showed face-specific difficulties – that is, poor face recognition with typical object recognition abilities. This is somewhat higher than previous adult estimates: it is possible that face matching tests overestimate the prevalence of face recognition difficulties in children; alternatively, some children may “outgrow” face recognition difficulties

    Automated team selection and compliance checking in business processes

    Plenty of activities in many business contexts must be performed collaboratively, e.g., in a hospital or when organising a conference. Tasks such as team composition and allocation are usually performed manually and on the ground of limited criteria such as individual skills, a.o. because adequate automatic support is missing. This paper addresses this shortcoming.     How does aging influence object-location and name-location binding during a visual short-term memory task?

    Objective: Age-related impairments in human visual short-term memory (VSTM) may reflect a reduced ability to retain bound object representations, viz., object form, name, spatial, and temporal location (so called ‘memory sources’). Our objective is to examine how healthy aging affects VSTM in a battery of memory recognition tasks in which sequentially presented objects, locations, and names (as auditory stimuli) were learned, with one component cued at test. Methods: Thirty-six young healthy adults (18-30 years) and 36 normally aging older adults (>60 years with no underlying health and vision issues) completed five VSTM tasks: 1. Object recognition for two or four objects; 2. Spatial location recognition for two or four objects; 3. Bound object-location recognition for two or four objects; 4. Object recognition with location priming for two or four objects; 5. Bound name (auditory)-location (cross-modal) recognition for four objects. Results: Significantly lower performance for older adults was found in spatial location recognition [task 2, p=0.03, 2 (memory loads) × 2 (age groups) ANOVA], bound object-location recognition [task 3, p˂0.001, 2 (memory loads) × 2 (age groups) ANOVA], object recognition with location priming [task 4, p=0.02, 2 (memory loads) × 2 (age groups) ANOVA], and bound name-location recognition [task 5, p=0.001, independent samples t-test] tasks. A significant age group-task interaction was found (p =0.02) Conclusion: Performance for all tests except test 1 was impaired in older adults. Lower performance for older adults was most significant in VSTM tasks requiring object-location (visual only) or name-location (auditory and visual) binding. The findings are compatible with the ‘memory source’ model, demonstrating that age-related binding performance is influenced by spatial coding and location priming deficits

    A review of system dynamics models applied in transportation

    It is 20 years since Abbas and Bell [1994. “System Dynamics Applicability to Transportation Modeling.” Transportation Research Part A 28 (5): 373–390] evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of system dynamics (SD) as an approach for modelling in the transportation area. They listed 12 advantages of the approach and in particular suggested it was well suited to strategic issues and that it could provide a useful tool for supporting policy analysis and decision-making in the transport field. This paper sets out a review of over 50 peer-reviewed journal papers since 1994 categorising them by area of application and providing a summary of particular insights raised. The fields of application include the take-up of alternate fuel vehicles, supply chain management affecting transport, highway maintenance, strategic policy, airport infrastructure and airline business cycles and a set of emerging application areas. The paper concludes with recommendations for future application of the SD approach
