Activating Volunteers for Statewide COVID-19 Pandemic Response

    Get PDF
Extension is known for facilitating local networks and having the capacity to organize and mobilize volunteers. These assets, critically important in crises and emergency situations, were drawn on to support Tennessee\u27s response to health care worker and community needs early in the coronavirus pandemic. Using local networks, we rapidly activated a statewide volunteer workforce to address potential shortages of cloth face masks before federal agencies recommended their widespread public use. We share social media communication strategies and a timeline of key events and acknowledge challenges we encountered in moving forward in an environment of inconsistent and evolving guidelines. Our actions may be applicable to addressing ongoing community needs as the pandemic persists and new circumstances arise

On the current practice of New Business Development in the German chemical industry

The results of a survey on the practice of new business development conducted in 17 chemical industry companies and related business sectors, such as service providers, are presented in this article. The objectives and organizational setup of New Business Development were found to be exceptionally heterogeneous and to cover a broad spectrum. The differentiation between New Business Development and Innovation Management was also not consistent between the companies. All the companies underlined the importance of technical and scientific know-how for new business development staff, but also emphasized the relevance of interdisciplinary competencies at the interface between natural science and business. Small companies follow a rather opportunistic New Business Development approach without dedicated organizational structures. Larger companies, on the other hand, employ a Stage-Gate process and largely derive their ideas from megatrends. Differences between small and larger companies are discussed in the article at hand

This research had been done to construction of the apparatus to determine solution freezing point depression with cooling system modified by using R&D design. Based on design and product of the apparatus, the validator gave judgment to suitability of the content, educational value, tool endurance, accurancy of measurement and safety for student aspects with each of them were in suitable criteria, expect tool efficient for use aspect. All components of the apparatus have function properly based on functioning test to the 1st years student of chemical education department of Lampung university and chemistry teachers\u27 responses in SMA N 8 Bandar Lampung. According to the results,it could be concluded that the constructed apparatus was suitable to use in learning.

A Large Mass Hierarchy from a Small Extra Dimension

We propose a new higher-dimensional mechanism for solving the Hierarchy Problem. The Weak scale is generated from a large scale of order the Planck scale through an exponential hierarchy. However, this exponential arises not from gauge interactions but from the background metric (which is a slice of AdS_5 spacetime). This mechanism relies on the existence of only a single additional dimension. We demonstrate a simple explicit example of this mechanism with two three-branes, one of which contains the Standard Model fields. The experimental consequences of this scenario are new and dramatic. There are fundamental spin-2 excitations with mass of weak scale order, which are coupled with weak scale as opposed to gravitational strength to the standard model particles. The phenomenology of these models is quite distinct from that of large extra dimension scenarios; none of the current constraints on theories with very large extra dimensions apply.Comment: 9 pages, LaTe

Self-force Regularization in the Schwarzschild Spacetime

We discuss the gravitational self-force on a particle in a black hole space-time. For a point particle, the full (bare) self-force diverges. The metric perturbation induced by a particle can be divided into two parts, the direct part (or the S part) and the tail part (or the R part), in the harmonic gauge, and the regularized self-force is derived from the R part which is regular and satisfies the source-free perturbed Einstein equations. But this formulation is abstract, so when we apply to black hole-particle systems, there are many problems to be overcome in order to derive a concrete self-force. These problems are roughly divided into two parts. They are the problem of regularizing the divergent self-force, i.e., ``subtraction problem'' and the problem of the singularity in gauge transformation, i.e., ``gauge problem''. In this paper, we discuss these problems in the Schwarzschild background and report some recent progress.Comment: 34 pages, 2 figures, submitted to CQG, special volume for Radiation Reaction (CAPRA7
