B --> pi and B --> K transitions in partially quenched chiral perturbation theory
We study the properties of the B-->pi and B-->K transition form factors in
partially quenched QCD by using the approach of partially quenched chiral
perturbation theory combined with the static heavy quark limit. We show that
the form factors change almost linearly when varying the value of the sea quark
mass, whereas the dependence on the valence quark mass contains both the
standard and chirally divergent (quenched) logarithms. A simple strategy for
the chiral extrapolations in the lattice studies with Nsea=2 is suggested. It
consists of the linear extrapolations from the realistically accessible quark
masses, first in the sea and then in the valence quark mass. From the present
approach, we estimate the uncertainty induced by such extrapolations to be

R-twist gene expression during rat palatogenesis
Palatal clefting is often associated with premature fusion of cranial sutures in human craniosynostosis syndromes, many of which are characterised by mutations affecting the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) gene family. In palatal fusion, epithelio-mesenchymal transition (EMT) contributes to the dispersion of the midline epithelial seam. EMT has also been observed in neoplastic epithelial cells in relation to the acquisition of malignant characteristics where morphological changes are accompanied by rapid switching in the expression of fgfr2 from the epithelial type (kgfr) to the mesenchymal type (bek). The twist gene codes for a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor putatively involved in regulation of transcription of fgfr2. Mutations in the TWIST gene have been described as being responsible for the Saethre-Chotzen syndrome, an autosomal dominant craniosynostosis associated with cleft palate as well as other disturbances of the facial skeleton. In this study we have analysed the distribution of twist transcripts during rat palatogenesis in vivo from 14.5 to 17.5 days post coitum by in situ hybridisation with digoxygenin-labelled ssDNA probes. twist transcripts were found to be concentrated in mesenchymal cells beneath the epithelium at the tip of the palatal shelves immediately prior to, and during fusion as well as in a localised epithelial area at the tip of the shelves prior to fusion, thereby implicating twist gene expression in the process of palatogenesis. We study the effects of chiral logs on the heavy-->light pseudoscalar meson
transition form factors by using standard and quenched chiral perturbation
theory combined with the static heavy quark limit. The resulting expressions
are used to indicate the size of uncertainties due to the use of the quenched
approximation in the current lattice studies. They may also be used to assess
the size of systematic uncertainties induced by missing chiral log terms in
extrapolating toward the physical pion mass. We also provide the coefficient
multiplying the quenched chiral log, which may be useful if the quenched

The Evidence for a Causal Link Between Disease and Damaging Behavior in Pigs
Damaging behaviors (DB) such as tail and ear biting are prevalent in pig production and reduce welfare and performance. Anecdotal reports suggest that health challenges increase the risk of tail-biting. The prevalence of tail damage and health problems show high correlations across batches within and between farms. There are many common risk factors for tail-biting and health problems, notably respiratory, enteric and locomotory diseases. These include suboptimal thermal climate, hygiene, stocking density and feed quality. The prevalence of tail damage and health problems also show high correlations across batches within and between farms. However, limited evidence supports two likely causal mechanisms for a direct link between DB and health problems. The first is that generalized poor health (e.g., enzootic pneumonia) on farm poses an increased risk of pigs performing DB. Recent studies indicate a possible causal link between an experimental inflammation and an increase in DB, and suggest a link between cytokines and tail-biting. The negative effects of poor health on the ingestion and processing of nutrients means that immune-stimulated pigs may develop specific nutrient deficiencies, increasing DB. The second causal mechanism involves tail-biting causing poor health. Indirectly, pathogens enter the body via the tail lesion and once infected, systemic spread of infection may occur. This occurs mainly via the venous route targeting the lungs, and to a lesser extent via cerebrospinal fluid and the lymphatic system. In carcasses with tail lesions, there is an increase in lung lesions, abscessation, arthritis and osteomyelitis. There is also evidence for the direct spread of pathogens between biters and victims. In summary, the literature supports the association between poor health and DB, particularly tail-biting. However, there is insufficient evidence to confirm causality in either direction. Nevertheless, the limited evidence is compelling enough to suggest that improvements to management and housing to enhance pig health will reduce DB. In the same way, improvements to housing and management designed to address DB, are likely to result in benefits to pig health. While most of the available literature relates to tail-biting, we suggest that similar mechanisms are responsible for links between health and other DB.Peer reviewe

dictyBase (http://dictybase.org) is the model organism database for Dictyostelium discoideum. It houses the complete genome sequence, ESTs and the entire body of literature relevant to Dictyostelium. This information is curated to provide accurate gene models and functional annotations, with the goal of fully annotating the genome. This dictyBase update describes the annotations and features implemented since 2006, including improved strain and phenotype representation, integration of predicted transcriptional regulatory elements, protein domain information, biochemical pathways, improved searching and a wiki tool that allows members of the research community to provide annotations
Higgs to mu tau Decay in Supersymmetry without R Parity
In this letter, we report on lepton flavor violating Higgs decay into mu+tau
in the framework of the generic supersymmetric standard model without R parity
and list interesting combinations of R-parity violating parameters. We impose
other known experimental constraints on the parameters of the model and show
our results from the R-parity violating parameters. In our analysis, the
branching ratio of Higgs to mu+tau can exceed 10^{-5} within admissible

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection presenting as an ischaemic stroke in a middle-aged man with anti-cardiolipin antibodies: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Cerebrovascular disease is a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Ischemic stroke is the most common manifestation, encompassing a wide variety of causative mechanisms. We present the case of a middle-aged male patient with spontaneous coronary artery dissection in the presence of anti-cardiolipin antibodies, leading to left ventricular thrombus and presenting with stroke.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 56-year-old Caucasian man presented with dysarthria and right-sided weakness. There was a history of chest pain with autonomic symptoms four days earlier. Examination revealed right-sided hemiparesis. Electrocardiogram showed sinus rhythm with anterior Q waves. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed large left parietal and smaller multiple cerebral infarcts. Echocardiogram showed anterior wall and apical akinesis with a large mural thrombus. Anti-cardiolipin antibodies immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M were strongly positive. Coronary angiography showed dissection of the mid left anterior descending artery with normal flow down the distal vessel. He was treated conservatively with anticoagulation and secondary prevention. He was in good health when seen in clinic four months later.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We highlight the importance of a comprehensive approach at obtaining the correct diagnosis, input of different specialities and the fact that the presence of anti-cardiolipin antibodies is associated with coronary artery dissection in a middle-aged male patient whose presentation was stroke.</p
Dark Matter attempts for CoGeNT and DAMA
Recently, the CoGeNT collaboration presented a positive signal for an annual
modulation in their data set. In light of the long standing annual modulation
signal in DAMA/LIBRA, we analyze the compatibility of both of these signal
within the hypothesis of dark matter (DM) scattering on nuclei, taking into
account existing experimental constraints. We consider the cases of elastic and
inelastic scattering with either spin-dependent or spin-independent coupling to
nucleons. We allow for isospin violating interactions as well as for light
mediators. We find that there is some tension between the size of the
modulation signal and the time-integrated event excess in CoGeNT, making it
difficult to explain both simultaneously. Moreover, within the wide range of DM
interaction models considered, we do not find a simultaneous explanation of
CoGeNT and DAMA/LIBRA compatible with constraints from other experiments.
However, in certain cases part of the data can be made consistent. For example,
the modulation signal from CoGeNT becomes consistent with the total rate and
with limits from other DM searches at 90% CL (but not with the DAMA/LIBRA
signal) if DM scattering is inelastic spin-independent with just the right
couplings to protons and neutrons to reduce the scattering rate on xenon.
Conversely the DAMA/LIBRA signal (but not CoGeNT) can be explained by
spin-dependent inelastic DM scattering.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figure
Two component dark matter
We explain the PAMELA positron excess and the PPB-BETS/ATIC e+ + e- data
using a simple two component dark matter model (2DM). The two particle species
in the dark matter sector are assumed to be in thermal equilibrium in the early
universe. While one particle is stable and is the present day dark matter, the
second one is metastable and decays after the universe is 10^-8 s old. In this
model it is simple to accommodate the large boost factors required to explain
the PAMELA positron excess without the need for large spikes in the local dark
matter density. We provide the constraints on the parameters of the model and
