Full QED+QCD Low-Energy Constants through Reweighting
The effect of sea quark electromagnetic charge on meson masses is
investigated, and first results for full QED+QCD low-energy constants are
presented. The electromagnetic charge for sea quarks is incorporated in
quenched QED+full QCD lattice simulations by a reweighting method. The
reweighting factor, which connects quenched and unquenched QED, is estimated

Effects of Acute Exercise on Affect in Females with Substance Use Disorder
International Journal of Exercise Science 16(5): 95-108, 2023. Negative mood states experienced during the withdrawal stage of substance dependence have been associated with relapse in persons suffering from substance use disorder (SUD). Exercise is gaining attention as an adjunct therapy for SUD due to its ability to alleviate negative mood states experienced during withdrawal. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of acute, controlled bouts of aerobic and resistance exercise versus sedentary control (quiet reading) on positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA) in females undergoing SUD treatment at inpatient facilities. Females (n=11; 34 + 8 yrs) were randomly assigned to each condition in counterbalanced fashion. Aerobic exercise (AE) consisted of 20 minutes of steady-state moderate intensity (40-60% HRR) treadmill walking. Resistance exercise (RE) consisted of 20 minutes of standardized circuit weight training (1:1 work to rest ratio). The Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) was used to assess PA and NA pre- and post-interventions. Repeated measures ANOVAs indicated AE and RE significantly increased PA (p \u3c 0.05) versus control, with no significant difference between AE and RE. Friedman’s test revealed AE and RE significantly reduced NA (p \u3c 0.05) versus control. Results indicate short bouts of aerobic and resistance exercise are equally effective for acute mood regulation and superior to a sedentary control in females undergoing inpatient SUD treatment
The Electromagnetic Self-Energy Contribution to M_p - M_n and the Isovector Nucleon Magnetic Polarizability
We update the determination of the isovector nucleon electromagnetic
self-energy, valid to leading order in QED. A technical oversight in the
literature concerning the elastic contribution to Cottingham's formula is
corrected and modern knowledge of the structure functions is used to precisely
determine the inelastic contribution. We find \delta M_{p-n}^\gamma =
1.30(03)(47) MeV. The largest uncertainty arises from a subtraction term
required in the dispersive analysis, which can be related to the isovector
magnetic polarizability. With plausible model assumptions, we can combine our
calculation with additional input from lattice QCD to constrain this
polarizability as: \beta_{p-n} = -0.87(85) x 10^{-4} fm^3.Comment: 5 pages, version accepted for publication in PR
Multi-Pion States in Lattice QCD and the Charged-Pion Condensate
The ground-state energies of systems containing up to twelve 's in a
spatial volume V ~ (2.5 fm)^3 are computed in dynamical, mixed-action lattice
QCD at a lattice spacing of ~ 0.125 fm for four different values of the light
quark masses. Clean signals are seen for each ground state, allowing for a
precise extraction of both the scattering length and
-interaction from a correlated analysis of systems containing
different numbers of 's. This extraction of the scattering
length is consistent with than that from the -system alone. The
large number of systems studied here significantly strengthens the arguments
presented in our earlier work and unambiguously demonstrates the presence of a
low energy -interaction. The equation of state of a
gas is investigated using our numerical results and the density dependence of
the isospin chemical potential for these systems agrees well with the
theoretical expectations of leading order chiral perturbation theory. The
chemical potential is found to receive a substantial contribution from the
-interaction at the lighter pion masses. An important
technical aspect of this work is the demonstration of the necessity of
performing propagator contractions in greater than double precision to extract

Genomic surveillance reveals low prevalence of livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the East of England
Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) is an emerging problem in many parts of the world. LA-MRSA has been isolated previously from animals and humans in the United Kingdom (UK), but the prevalence is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and to describe the molecular epidemiology of LA-MRSA isolated in the East of England (broadly Cambridge and the surrounding area). We accessed whole genome sequence data for 2,283 MRSA isolates from 1,465 people identified during a 12-month prospective study between 2012 and 2013 conducted in the East of England, United Kingdom. This laboratory serves four hospitals and 75 general practices. We screened the collection for multilocus sequence types (STs) and for host specific resistance and virulence factors previously associated with LA-MRSA. We identified 13 putative LA-MRSA isolates from 12 individuals, giving an estimated prevalence of 0.82% (95% CI 0.47% to 1.43%). Twelve isolates were mecC-MRSA (ten CC130, one ST425 and one ST1943) and single isolate was ST398. Our data demonstrate a low burden of LA-MRSA in the East of England, but the detection of mecC-MRSA and ST398 indicates the need for vigilance. Aplastic Crisis as Primary Manifestation of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Aplastic crisis is an unusual feature of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We report the case of a 54-year-old woman presenting with both (extravascular) Coombs-positive hemolytic anemia and laboratory findings of bone marrow hyporegeneration with concomitant severe neutropenia. A bone marrow biopsy confirmed aplastic crisis. Diagnostic work-up revealed soaring titers of autoantibodies (anti-nuclear, anti-double-stranded DNA, anti-cardiolipin-IgM, and anti-beta 2-glykoprotein-IgM antibodies), indicating a connective tissue disease as the most plausible reason for bone marrow insufficiency. As the criteria for SLE were fulfilled, we initiated an immunosuppressive therapy by steroids, which led to a rapid complete hematologic and clinical remission in our patient. In this case, we could report on one of the rare cases of SLE-induced aplastic crisis showing that this condition can be entirely reversed by immunosuppressive treatment and that SLE-induced aplastic crisis yields a good prognosis. In conclusion, in a case of aplastic crisis, physicians should be aware that SLE can be a rare cause that is accessible to specific treatment
Expressed Ay HMW glutenin subunit in Australian wheat cultivars indicates a positive effect on wheat quality
Out of the six HMW-GS genes, 1Ay is usually not expressed in bread wheat cultivars. In the current study, an active 1Ay gene has been integrated into two Australian wheat cultivars, Livingston and Bonnie Rock, through conventional backcross approach. Three sister lines at BC4F4 generation for each cross were obtained and underwent a series of quality testing. Results show that the active 1Ay subunit increased the amount total protein, Glutenin/Gliadin ratio and unextractable polymeric protein. The expressed 1Ay also resulted in up to 10% increase of gluten content, 5% increase of glutenin, and hence increased the HMW- to LMW-GS ratio without affecting the relative amount of other subunits. Milling yield and Flour swelling were decreased in the Livingston lines and remained mostly unchanged for Bonnie Rock. Alveograph result showed that Ay improved dough strength in Livingston and dough extensibility in Bonnie Rock. Zeleny sedimentation value was found to be higher in all three lines of Bonnie Rock but only in one of Livingston derivatives. The dough development time and peak resistance, determined on the micro Z-arm mixer were increased in most cases. Overall, the integration of Ay subunit showed significant positive effects in bread making quality
Exploring sociodemographic correlates of suicide stigma in Australia: Baseline cross-sectional survey findings from the life-span suicide prevention trial studies
The risk of suicidal behaviour in Australia varies by age, sex, sexual preference and Indigenous status. Suicide stigma is known to affect suicide rates and help-seeking for suicidal crises. The aim of this study was to investigate the sociodemographic correlates of suicide stigma to assist in prevention efforts. We surveyed community members and individuals who had attended specific emergency departments for suicidal crisis. The respondents were part of a large-scale suicide prevention trial in New South Wales, Australia. The data collected included demographic characteristics, measures of help-seeking and suicide stigma. The linear regression analyses conducted sought to identify the factors associated with suicide stigma. The 5426 participants were predominantly female (71.4 %) with a mean (SD) age of 41.7 (14.8) years, and 3.9 % were Indigenous. Around one-third of participants reported a previous suicide attempt (n = 1690, 31.5 %) with two-thirds (n = 3545, 65.3 %) seeking help for suicidal crisis in the past year. Higher stigma scores were associated with Indigenous status (β 0.123, 95 % CI 0.074 – 0.172), male sex (β 0.527, 95 % CI 0.375 – 0.626) and regional residence (β 0.079, 95 % CI 0.015 – 0.143). Lower stigma scores were associated with younger age (β − 0.002, 95 % CI − 0.004 – − 0.001), mental illness (β − 0.095, 95 % CI − 0.139 to − 0.050), male bisexuality (β − 0.202, 95 % CI − 0.351 to − 0.052) and males who glorified suicide (β − 0.075, 95 % CI − 0.119 to − 0.031). These results suggested that suicide stigma differed across the community, varying significantly by sex, sexual orientation and Indigenous status. Targeted educational programs to address suicide stigma could assist in suicide prevention efforts
Referral from secondary care and to aftercare in a tertiary care university hospital in Japan
BACKGROUND: In Japan, all citizens are covered by the national insurance system in which universal free access to healthcare services is promised to everybody. There are no general physicians or gatekeepers in the Japanese healthcare system. METHODS: We studied the pattern of referral of inpatients from secondary care hospitals to a tertiary care university hospital and the reverse referral under the situations using a geographic information system (GIS), taking paediatric inpatients as an example. RESULTS: The results showed that 61.2% of the patients were directly admitted to the hospital without referral from other hospitals or clinics and that 82.8% of the inpatients were referred to the outpatient department of the hospital to which they had been admitted. GIS analysis for the inpatients service area showed the hospital functions as both a secondary care hospital and tertiary care hospital. Patients who lived near the hospital tended to be admitted directly to the hospital, and patients who lived far from the hospital tended to utilize the hospital as a tertiary care provider. There were territorial disputes with other secondary care hospitals. To estimate spatial differences in referral to aftercare, we analyzed the spatial distribution of inpatients with focus on their length of hospital stay (LOS). GIS analysis revealed apparent foci of patients with long LOS and those with low LOS. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the function of university hospital in Japan is unspecialized and that the referral route from the university hospital to aftercare is also unequipped
Safety and Immunogenicity of the Live Attenuated Varicella Vaccine Following T Replete or T Cell-Depleted Related and Unrelated Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation (alloHCT)
There are limited studies assessing the live attenuated varicella vaccine following allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT). Because of the morbidity of varicella acquired after childhood, we immunized and retrospectively analyzed the safety and immunogenicity of this vaccine in 46 varicella zoster virus (VZV) seronegative patients <20 years old at HCT who achieved a CD4 cell count ≥200/μL, were off immunosuppression, and responded to ≥1 post-HCT vaccines. Two vaccinated patients lacking follow-up titers were excluded from analysis. Stem cells were derived from an HLA-matched sibling (n = 18) or an alternative (HLA mismatched related or unrelated) donor (n = 26). Median time to vaccination was 4 years. Sixty-four percent of patients seroconverted following 1 immunization. There was no significant difference in response between recipients of a matched related or alternative donor graft (P = .2) or between those given a T cell-depleted or T-replete alternative donor graft (P = .27). Three of 44 patients developed a self-limited varicella-like rash within 2.5 weeks of immunization. With a median follow-up of 29.1 (range: 6.9-167.1) months, there were no subsequent cases of varicella-like rashes. No patient developed shingles. This study suggests that this vaccine is safe and immunogenic when given according to preset clinical and immunologic milestones, warranting larger prospective studies in patients ≥24 months following HCT as outlined in current post-HCT vaccine guidelines
