    University Web Portals As Information Management Tool: Technology Acceptance Dimension

    This study of the use of university web portal as information management tool identified the respondent’s utilization and technology acceptance.  The research aimed to: (1) to explore faculty members’ acceptance of university web portal as an information management tool in teaching and (2) identify the key intention determinants of UE web portal use. With the forty (40) faculty respondents coming from the six (6) randomly selected colleges of the University of the East, the findings revealed that they have positive attitude towards the use of the portal as information management tool because of its usefulness and ease of use. The analysis depicts the respondents’ full intention to continue using the university web portal. The result confirmed perceived usefulness (PU) as a determinant for behavioral intention to continue using the university web portal as information management tool

    Short-range charge-order in RRNiO3_{3} perovskites (RR=Pr,Nd,Eu) probed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy

    The short-range organization around Ni atoms in orthorhombic RRNiO3_{3} (RR=Pr,Nd,Eu) perovskites has been studied over a wide temperature range by Ni K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our results demonstrate that two different Ni sites, with different average Ni-O bond lengths, coexist in those orthorhombic compounds and that important modifications in the Ni nearest neighbors environment take place across the metal-insulator transition. We report evidences for the existence of short-range charge-order in the insulating state, as found in the monoclinic compounds. Moreover, our results suggest that the two different Ni sites coexists even in the metallic state. The coexistence of two different Ni sites, independently on the RR ion, provides a common ground to describe these compounds and shed new light in the understanding of the phonon-assisted conduction mechanism and unusual antiferromagnetism present in all RRNiO3_{3} compounds.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted PRB - Brief Report Dec.200

    Spin-orbit induced mixed-spin ground state in RRNiO3_3 perovskites probed by XAS: new insight into the metal to insulator transition

    We report on a Ni L2,3_{2,3} edges x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study in RRNiO3_3 perovskites. These compounds exhibit a metal to insulator (MIMI) transition as temperature decreases. The L3_{3} edge presents a clear splitting in the insulating state, associated to a less hybridized ground state. Using charge transfer multiplet calculations, we establish the importance of the crystal field and 3d spin-orbit coupling to create a mixed-spin ground state. We explain the MIMI transition in RRNiO3_3 perovskites in terms of modifications in the Ni3+^{3+} crystal field splitting that induces a spin transition from an essentially low-spin (LS) to a mixed-spin state.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted as PRB - Rapid Comm.     Local tetragonal distortion in La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3 strained thin films probed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

    We report on an angular resolved X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy study of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3} thin films epitaxially grown by pulsed laser deposition on slightly mismatched substrates which induce tensile or compressive strains. XANES spectra give evidence of tetragonal distortion within the MnO6MnO_{6} octahedra, with opposite directions for tensile and compressive strains. Quantitative analysis has been done and a model of tetragonal distortion reflecting the strain has been established. EXAFS data collected in plane for tensile substrate confirm the change in the Mn−OMn-O average bond distance and the increase of Mn−MnMn-Mn length matching with the enlargement of the cell parameter. From these results we conclude that there is no significant change in the Mn−O−MnMn-O-Mn angle. Our observations conflict with the scenarios which this angle is the main driving parameter in the sensitivity of manganite films properties to external strains and suggest that the distortion within the octahedra plays a key role in the modification of the transport and magnetic properties.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    Differences in decision-making behavior between elite and amateur team-handball players in a near-game test situation

    Athletic features distinguishing experts from non-experts in team sports are relevant for performance analyses, talent identification and successful training. In this respect, perceptual-cognitive factors like decision making have been proposed to be important predictor of talent but, however, assessing decision making in team sports remains a challenging endeavor. In particular, it is now known that decisions expressed by verbal reports or micro-movements in the laboratory differ from those actually made in on-field situations in play. To address this point, our study compared elite and amateur players' decision-making behavior in a near-game test environment including sport-specific sensorimotor responses. Team-handball players (N = 44) were asked to respond as quickly as possible to representative, temporally occluded attack sequences in a team-handball specific defense environment on a contact plate system. Specifically, participants had to choose and perform the most appropriate out of four prespecified, defense response actions. The frequency of responses and decision time were used as dependent variables representing decision-making behavior. We found that elite players responded significantly more often with offensive responses (p < 0.05, odds ratios: 2.76-3.00) in left-handed attack sequences. Decision time decreased with increasing visual information, but no expertise effect was found. We suppose that expertise-related knowledge and processing of kinematic information led to distinct decision-making behavior between elite and amateur players, evoked in a domain-specific and near-game test setting. Results also indicate that the quality of a decision might be of higher relevance than the required time to decide. Findings illustrate application opportunities in the context of performance analyses and talent identification processes

    Analyzing Reporting of Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries in the Acute Care Setting

    This project was conducted at a level one trauma center, acute care hospital consisting of 459 beds. With more patients than wound care nurses, hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) have become a significant problem for this hospital. A gap between reporting in the Safety and Quality Information System (SQIS) and the reporting that takes place in electronic health record (EHR) with wound care consults has been observed. A root cause analysis (RCA) was used to identify discrepancies. The accurate collection of data was identified as paramount providing information necessary to create improvements and lower the occurrence of HAPIs. The conceptual framework which guided this project to decrease the incidence of inaccurate HAPI documentation was the PDSA model/cycle. The Lewin Change Model was applied as the leadership theory. The cost of one HAPI is 14,506andcanpotentiallycostthehospital14,506 and can potentially cost the hospital 2,088,864 per year. With the proper education to prevent HAPIs from occurring, the medical center can save on average $1,044,432 per year. The plan is to educate nurses on the prevention, correct staging, and proper documentation of HAPIs. Using process and balance measures, the team can study the effectiveness of the interventions. Additionally, nurses who attended educational sessions completed pre and post tests to assess their knowledge which was then compared through a bar chart. With all these efforts, expected outcomes are to sustain a 50% decrease in HAPIs at this hospital

    Portability vs. Precedent: IMUs vs. 3D Motion Capture for Collecting Kinematic Data in Dancers

    The emergence of portable kinematic data collection systems (Inertial Measurement Units - IMUs) have become a potential alternative to 3D video motion capture systems for real-world application. However, there remains little research on the application of IMU technology for the evaluation of dancers’ biomechanical movement. PURPOSE: To assess the validity of the Noraxon IMU system compared with the Cortex 3D video motion capture system for kinematic data collection during a sauté. METHODS: 10 healthy, advanced female dancers were equipped with both a Noraxon IMU (200Hz) system and reflective markers used with a 12-camera Motion Analysis system (Cortex, 250 Hz) for simultaneous data collection. Participants completed an independent After a 10-minute warmup, each participant performed one trial of 10 stationary sautés while barefoot, with feet in second position and arms in fifth position in time with music at 95 bpm. The middle 5 jumps of each participant’s trial were processed and analyzed with Visual3D and MATLAB for the Cortex data, and through Noraxon’s reporting system for the Noraxon data. All results were compared through SPSS with repeated-measures ANOVAs. RESULTS: A main effect of measurement system was found for peak joint angles in the sagittal ((6,4)=0.009, p \u3c 0.001), frontal ((9,1)=0.12, p \u3c 0.001), and transverse ((9,1)=0.009, p \u3c 0.001) planes. Pairwise comparisons revealed significant differences in peak hip flexion, hip extension, knee flexion, knee extension, ankle plantar flexion, ankle dorsiflexion, hip adduction, knee adduction, ankle inversion, hip internal rotation, hip external rotation, knee internal rotation, knee external rotation, and ankle internal rotation. No significant main effect was found between measurement systems for sagittal, frontal, and transverse plane joint excursions ((9,1)=0.12, p=0.253). CONCLUSION: Significant differences in most peak joint angles indicate that Noraxon IMUs do not have strong validity for capturing absolute joint angles compared to 3D video motion capture. However, joint excursion measurements were similar, indicating that Noraxon IMUs may be valid for measuring the total amount of motion during a particular movement. Additional analysis is warranted for further understanding of this technology
