    Bound States in n Dimensions (Especially n = 1 and n = 2)

    We stress that in contradiction with what happens in space dimensions n≥3n \geq 3, there is no strict bound on the number of bound states with the same structure as the semi-classical estimate for large coupling constant and give, in two dimensions, examples of weak potentials with one or infinitely many bound states. We derive bounds for one and two dimensions which have the "right" coupling constant behaviour for large coupling.Comment: Talk given by A.     Noise correlations, entanglement, and Bell inequalities

    The aim of this chapter is to describe two situations where positive noise correlations can be directly monitored using a transport experiment, either with a superconductor or with a correlated electron system. To be more precise, the present text reflects the presentations made by the three authors during the Delft NATO workshop. Bell inequalities and quantum mechanical non-locality with electrons injected from a superconductor will be addressed first. Next, noise correlations will be computed in a carbon nanotube where electrons are injected in the bulk from a STM tip. The first topic is the result of an ongoing collaboration with G. Lesovik and G. Blatter over the years. The unifying theme is that in both branched quantum circuits, entanglement is explicit and can be illustrated via noise correlations. Entanglement can be achieved either for pairs of electrons in the case of superconductor sources connected to Fermi liquid leads, or alternatively for pairs of quasiparticle excitations of the correlated electron fluid.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, Proceedings of the NATO ARW workshop on Quantum Noise, Y.     A complete characterisation of the heralded noiseless amplification of photons

    Heralded noiseless amplifcation of photons has recently been shown to provide a means to overcome losses in complex quantum communication tasks. In particular, to overcome transmission losses that could allow for the violation of a Bell inequality free from the detection loophole, for Device Independent Quantum Key Distribution (DI-QKD). Several implementations of a heralded photon amplifier have been proposed and the first proof of principle experiments realised. Here we present the first full characterisation of such a device to test its functional limits and potential for DI-QKD. This device is tested at telecom wavelengths and is shown to be capable of overcoming losses corresponding to a transmission through 20 km20\, \rm km of single mode telecom fibre. We demonstrate heralded photon amplifier with a gain >100>100 and a heralding probability >83>83 % , required by DI-QKD protocols that use the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality. The heralded photon amplifier clearly represents a key technology for the realisation of DI-QKD in the real world and over typical network distances.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    High efficiency coupling of photon pairs in practice

    Multi-photon and quantum communication experiments such as loophole-free Bell tests and device independent quantum key distribution require entangled photon sources which display high coupling efficiency. In this paper we put forward a simple quantum theoretical model which allows the experimenter to design a source with high pair coupling efficiency. In particular we apply this approach to a situation where high coupling has not been previously obtained: we demonstrate a symmetric coupling efficiency of more than 80% in a highly frequency non-degenerate configuration. Furthermore, we demonstrate this technique in a broad range of configurations, i.e. in continuous wave and pulsed pump regimes, and for different nonlinear crystals

    Loss of strength in Ni3Al at elevated temperatures

    Stress decrease above the stress peak temperature (750 K) is studied in h123i single crystals of Ni3(Al, 3 at.% Hf ). Two thermally activated deformation mechanisms are evidenced on the basis of stress relaxation and strain rate change experiments. From 500 to 1070 K, the continuity of the activation volume/temperature curves reveals a single mechanism of activation enthalpy 3.8 eV/atom and volume 90 b3 at 810K with an athermal stress of 330 MPa. Over the very same temperature interval, impurity or solute diffusion towards dislocation cores is evidenced through serrated yielding, peculiar shapes of stress–strain curves while changing the rate of straining and stress relaxation experiments. This complicates the identification of the deformation mechanism, which is likely connected with cube glide. From 1070 to 1270 K, the high-temperature mechanism has an activation enthalpy and volume of 4.8 eV/atom and 20 b3, respectively, at 1250 K

    Current models of the virus-like agents of scrapie and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) have to take into account that structural changes in a host-encoded protein (PrP protein) exhibit an effect on the time course of these diseases and the survival time of any man or animal exposed to these pathogens. We report here the sequence of different forms of the bovine PrP gene which contain either five or six copies of a short, G-C-rich element which encodes the octapeptide Pro-His-Gly-Gly-Gly-Trp-Gly-Gln or its longer variants Pro-Gln/His-Gly-Gly-Gly-Gly-Trp-Gly-Gln. Out of 12 cattle, we found eight animals homozygous for genes with six copies of the Gly-rich peptide (6:6), while four were heterozygous (6:5). Two confirmed cases of BSE occurred in (6: 6) homozygous animals. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a transmissible disease (Fraser et al., 1988; Dawson et al., 1990; Barlow & Middleton, 1990) which produces neuropathological lesions in cattle similar to those seen in ovine scrapie (Wells et al., 1987) and the rare human dementias Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and Gerstmann-Str/iussler syndrome (GSS) (Beck & Daniel, 1987). A cellular membrane protein (PrP) has a key role in the transmission and development of these diseases. This protein accumulates in the brain and other tissues during the protracted time course of these diseases and, in a disease-specific, protease-resistant isoform (SAF-PrP), has been purified by subcellular fractionation of scrapie

    Positive current noise cross-correlations in capacitively coupled double quantum dots with ferromagnetic leads

    We examine cross-correlations (CCs) in the tunneling currents through two parallel interacting quantum dots coupled to four independent ferromagnetic electrodes. We find that when either one of the two circuits is in the parallel configuration with sufficiently strong polarization strength, a new mechanism of dynamical spin blockade, i.e., a spin-dependent bunching of tunneling events, governs transport through the system together with the inter-dot Coulomb interaction, leading to a sign-reversal of the zero-frequency current CC in the dynamical channel blockade regime, and to enhancement of positive current CC in the dynamical channel anti-blockade regimes, in contrast to the corresponding results for the case of paramagnetic leads.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
