    What underlies the neuropsychological pattern of irregular>regular past-tense verb production?

    The disadvantage in producing the past tense of regular relative to irregular verbs shown by some patients with non-fluent aphasia has been alternatively attributed (a) to the failure of a specific rule-based morphological mechanism, or (b) to a more generalised phonological impairment that penalises regular verbs more than irregular owing to the on-average greater phonological complexity of regular past-tense forms. Guided by the second of these two accounts, the current study was designed to identify more specific aspects of phonological deficit that might be associated with the pattern of irregular > regular past-tense production. Non-fluent aphasic patients (N = 8) were tested on past-tense verb production tasks and assessed with regard to the impact of three main manipulations in other word-production tasks: (i) insertion of a delay between stimulus and response in repetition; (ii) presence/ number of consonant clusters in a target word in repetition; (iii) position of stress within a bi-syllabic word in repetition and picture naming. The performance of all patients deteriorated in delayed repetition; but the patients with the largest discrepancy between regular and irregular past-tense production showed greater sensitivity to the other two manipulations.     The relationship between phonological and morphological deficits in Broca's aphasia: further evidence from errors in verb inflection

    A previous study of 10 patients with Broca’s aphasia demonstrated that the advantage for producing the past tense of irregular over regular verbs exhibited by these patients was eliminated when the two sets of past-tense forms were matched for phonological complexity (Bird, Lambon Ralph, Seidenberg, McClelland, & Patterson, 2003). The interpretation given was that a generalised phonological impairment was central to the patients’ language deficits, including their poor performance on regular past tense verbs. The current paper provides further evidence in favour of this hypothesis, on the basis of a detailed analysis of the errors produced by these same 10 patients in reading, repetition, and sentence completion for a large number of regular, irregular, and nonce verbs. The patients’ predominant error types in all tasks and for all verb types were close and distant phonologically related responses. The balance between close and distant errors varied along three continua: the severity of the patient (more distant errors produced by the more severely impaired patients); the difficulty of the task (more distant errors in sentence completion > reading > repetition); the difficulty of the item (more distant errors for novel word forms than real verbs). A position analysis for these phonologically related errors revealed that vowels were most likely to be preserved and that consonant onsets and offsets were equally likely to be incorrect. Critically, the patients’ errors exhibited a strong tendency to simplify the phonological form of the target. These results are consistent with the notion that the patients’ relatively greater difficulty with regular past tenses reflects a phonological impairment that is sensitive to the complexity of spoken forms

    Network sensitivity to geographical configuration

    Gravitational wave astronomy will require the coordinated analysis of data from the global network of gravitational wave observatories. Questions of how to optimally configure the global network arise in this context. We have elsewhere proposed a formalism which is employed here to compare different configurations of the network, using both the coincident network analysis method and the coherent network analysis method. We have constructed a network model to compute a figure-of-merit based on the detection rate for a population of standard-candle binary inspirals.     Progress in GaAs/CuInSe2 tandem junction solar cells

    Much more power is required for spacecraft of the future than current vehicles. To meet this increased demand for power while simultaneously meeting other requirements for launch, deployment, and maneuverability, the development of higher-efficiency, lighter-weight, and more radiation resistant photovoltaic cells is essential. Mechanically stacked tandem junction solar cells based on (AlGaAs)GaAs thin film CLEFT (Cleavage of Lateral Epitaxial Film for Transfer) top cells and CuInSe2(CIS) thin film bottom cells are being developed to meet these power needs. The mechanically stacked tandem configuration is chosen due to its interconnect flexibility allowing more efficient array level performance. It also eliminates cell fabrication processing constraints associated with monolithically integrated multi-junction approaches, thus producing higher cell fabrication yields. The GaAs cell is used as the top cell due to its demonstrated high efficiency, and good radiation resistance. Furthermore, it offers a future potential for bandgap tuning using AlGaAs as the absorber to maximize cell performance. The CuInSe2 cell is used as the bottom cell due to superb radiation resistance, stability, and optimal bandgap value in combination with an AlGaAs top cell. Since both cells are incorporated as thin films, this approach provides a potential for very high specific power. This high specific power (W/kg), combined with high power density (W/sq m) resulting from the high efficiency of this approach, makes these cells ideally suited for various space applications

    RADIANS: A Multidisciplinary Central Nervous System Clinic Model for Radiation Oncology and Neurosurgery Practice

    Background Radiation therapy for central nervous system disease commonly involves collaboration between Radiation Oncology and Neurosurgery. We describe our early experience with a multidisciplinary clinic model. Methods In 2016, the novel RADIANS (RADIation oncology And NeuroSurgery) clinic model was initiated at a community hospital. Disease and treatment demographics were collected and analyzed. Patient satisfaction was assessed via a blinded survey questionnaire. Results Forty-two patients have been seen since the inception of RADIANS. The median age was 65; and the median patient distance from RADIANS was 42.7 miles (mean = 62.6; range = 0.7–285). Half of the patients traveled >50 miles to receive care, and >80% were seen for central nervous system metastases. Of the patients receiving radiation, 75% received stereotactic radiosurgery/stereotactic body radiation therapy. The mean overall satisfaction from 0 (not satisfied) to 5 (very satisfied) was 4.8. Conclusions The RADIANS clinic model has proved viable and well-liked by patients in a community setting, with the majority of radiation therapy administered being stereotactic radiosurgery/stereotactic body radiation therapy rather than conventional fractionation

    Human μ-calpain: Simple isolation from erythrocytes and characterization of autolysis fragments

    Heterodimeric μ-calpain, consisting of the large (80 kDa) and the small (30 kDa) subunit, was isolated and purified from human erythrocytes by a highly reproducible four-step purification procedure. Obtained material is more than 95% pure and has a specific activity of 6 - 7 mU/mg. Presence of contaminating proteins could not be detected by HPLC and sequence analysis. During storage at -80 °C the enzyme remains fully activatable by Ca²⁺, although the small subunit is partially processed to a 22 kDa fragment. This novel autolysis product of the small subunit starts with the sequence (60)RILG and is further processed to the known 18 kDa fragment. Active forms and typical transient and stable autolysis products of the large subunit were identified by protein sequencing. In casein-zymograms only the activatable forms 80 kDa+30 kDa, 80 kDa+22 kDa and 80 kDa+18 kDa displayed caseinolysis

    Blue laser cooling transitions in Tm I

    We have studied possible candidates for laser cooling transitions in 169^{169}Tm in the spectral region 410 -- 420 nm. By means of saturation absorption spectroscopy we have measured the hyperfine structure and rates of two nearly closed cycling transitions from the ground state 4f136s2(2F0)(Jg=7/2)4\textrm{f}^{13}6\textrm{s}^2(^2\textrm{F}_0)(J_g=7/2) to upper states 4f12(3H5)5d3/26s2(Je=9/2)4\textrm{f}^{12}(^3\textrm{H}_5)5\textrm{d}_{3/2}6\textrm{s}^2(J_e=9/2) at 410.6 nm and 4f12(3F4)5d5/26s2(Je=9/2)4\textrm{f}^{12}(^3\textrm{F}_4)5\textrm{d}_{5/2}6\textrm{s}^2(J_e=9/2) at 420.4 nm and evaluated the life times of the excited levels as 15.9(8) ns and 48(6) ns respectively. Decay rates from these levels to neighboring opposite-parity levels are evaluated by means of Hartree-Fock calculations. We conclude, that the strong transition at 410.6 nm has an optical leak rate of less then 21052\cdot10^{-5} and can be used for efficient laser cooling of 169^{169}Tm from a thermal atomic beam. The hyperfine structure of two other even-parity levels which can be excited from the ground state at 409.5 nm and 418.9 nm is also measured by the same technique. In addition we give a calculated value of 7(2)7(2) s1^{-1} for the rate of magnetic-dipole transition at 1.14 μ\mum between the fine structure levels (Jg=7/2)(Jg=5/2)(J_g=7/2)\leftrightarrow(J'_g=5/2) of the ground state which can be considered as a candidate for applications in atomic clocks.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
